The Kats d-line starting a yard off the ball is one technique for defeating zone blocking by the o-line. Zone blocking is all about getting horizontal movement on your blocks and creating holes. Since they don't need to worry so much about down-field push, starting a yard off the ball theoretically gives the d-line a little more time to see the play and react.
