Pretty goofy comment. Richmond loses a prep day to travel, which makes it about even in that regard. Wonder which game goes on Friday night? I'm a proponent of keeping Stick out there, however, if the Bison D shows up again next week, I think 21 points or so is a ticket to Frisco. However, putting in Wentz is a game changer but i still do not want to pull Stick if he continues his game. I know I'm in the minority of keeping Wentz sidelined if Stick keeps his play up, but man it's hard to keep Wentz not on the field if he is healthy.

The complete difference in the game was special teams. NDSU burned us with kick returns all games, they didn't allow us to return any kicks, and then of course Lecompte. 16 of NDSU's 23 points were direct result of a special teams play.

TheKingpin28

Cause Polasek will find a way to screw it up. Dual threat systems do not work, but if they had read option packages, then that would be a different story.
Don't agree that two QB systems can't work, particularly in this case. Briscoe has been pretty good out of the bullpen in relief of Johnson for Sam Houston State in the playoffs. And Wentz is the best HEALTHY QB in FCS right now ...

Stick plays with a fire. He has that will to win thing going on. I'm in the camp of this is Stick's team now.

Well put. You know that UNI is always going to play tough. Wonder what would have happened if the Panthers hadn't kicked the ball to Anderson to start the second half. That changed the whole dynamic of the game in one play.

One of the beauties of football is always the special teams. Often over looked, but Oh so important. Your 100% right, if the Panthers squib to start the 2nd half, who knows how this would end up. UNIs D played exceptionally well with the lead.

The complete difference in the game was special teams. NDSU burned us with kick returns all games, they didn't allow us to return any kicks, and then of course Lecompte. 16 of NDSU's 23 points were direct result of a special teams play.
One special teams performer who deserves some props today is the UNI kicker, Michael Schmadeke. Those two onside kicks were very well executed and gave the kickoff team excellent chances for recoveries.

What I hate is his arrogance. The main reason that he is on ESPN is that they think it helps them with female demographics. ESPN has a lot of folks around like that, including almost all of the sideline reporters. Add that female baseball/softball announcer Jessica Mendoza to that list. She is terrible as a color commentator, even though she was a college and national team softball star.

From what I had heard, he was cleared to play today. He is a team guy and will contribute one way, or another. Too bad that the top three QBs in FCS, John Robertson of Villanova, Vad Lee of JMU and Wentz, all were derailed by injuries this season. I think all three will be playing on Sundays.

I know this is something that the UNI faithful vent a lot about but if there offense was better they would be scary good. Thank goodness for the NDSU punter Ben LeCompte and the kickoff return team & Bruce "Almighty " Anderson on the monster kickoff return for a touchdown. The UNI game made me nervous as they are not intimidated by playing NDSU like a lot of teams are.

Like I've already said the coaches have a better idea than any of us about the psyche of the team and how each QB looks in practice but there's no debate that his skill set, when healthy, matches up much better with Richmond than Stick's skill set.

Take off the yellow and green glasses for a minute. I know Brock very well and he will be the first to tell you that if not for the Rams, Holloway, Smith, Vraa, McNorton, Crockett, and Ojuri he would have been alright at best. It helps when you are surrounded by talent. Vigen knew 5 plays and only 5. A gap run, jet sweep, screen, seem/post, and give Brock the ball. Sure Polasek is more spread than pro, but I'm telling you, neither of them are good D1 OCs. Why do think Vigen faltered at Wyoming? According to your beliefs, they should have trounced the MWC.

Damn Bison fans. You guys won and you're bickering about which stud QB to play. Crap! You guys are spoiled. LOL

Just go Ohio State and play the third stringer and make Wentz a WR.

It's worse than that. We have several fans that think our o coordinator should be fired when every play doesn't go for a TD. We also have fans that call for the d coordinator to be fired when we miss tackles or the other team has a good game against us.

Very spoiled and annoying actually.

Go read the game threads of Montana and today to see what I'm talking about.

Good game UNI. Congrats on a very good season. Sat in the end zone seats where the safety happened. Pretty awesome.

Back from the game:

1. What a game today. Heavyweight fight where both teams gave it their best. Both defenses played great.

2. NDSU's punter Ben LeCompte was the best player on the field today. He didn't give UNI a chance to return kickoffs and his punts were spot on today. What a stud.

3. Farley's kid, #46, is a stud at LB. Couple of times I thought the Bison RBs had a big hole and all of a sudden #46 comes out of no where to make a tackle. Great sideline to sideline speed and has a nose for the ball. Hats off to him, he played a very good game.

4. NDSU's OL did a decent job today against a very tough defense.

5. KO return for a TD was huge. Huge momentum boost for the Bison.

6. Great defensive effort by the Bison. Bailey/Smith both had over 200 yards rushing against Portland State and the Bison defense held the UNI offense to a total of 225 yards, IIRC.

7. DeLuca is a stud. AA material IMO.

8. Looking forward to how Richmond will handle the noise for the 1st time. With the way the Bison defense is playing, it is going to take a huge effort to beat the Bison next week.

9. UNI is tough as hell! Love to hate them but they are one hell of a team that plays the Bison tough as hell.

I have nothing but respect for the UNI team. They bring their brand of in your face football year after year. Only a great team can test a great team.

I don't think any teams plays the Bison tougher.

Well, the onside kick worked, if the Panther had been able to get a foot down in bounds. There wasn't an NDSU player near the ball.

How can you say it worked, and then in the same sentence describe how it did not work. xconfusedx
I can do that also, here is a good example "Man NDSUs offense was on fire, we scored every time we touched the ball, to bad we didn't cross the goal line more than 3 times and missed two field goals".

Both onside kickoffs were better than the opening kickoff of the 2nd half right?

do you suppose they were thinking about that result being a possibility when they decided not to onside then?

if uu can play defense at the 25 you can play defense at the 50

Thats awesome. Those type of plays always seem to settle big time matchups, without it who the hells knows what would have happened.

One point: I know most of you all don't like stadiums with a running track.......and the Fargo Dome is a fine facility, but this place, and Jax. State's place, the distance from the sidelines to the stands is too close.....IMO, should be at least 30 feet, Fargo Dome looks like only 20-22 feet.

have you ever seen the UNI Dome? haha. even less distance between sidelines and the stands.

Also, someone inquired about the noise level comparison between Fargo and UNI. I can't personally testify about the sound level on the field, but as a fan in the stands, UNI crowds are way too quiet/lazy for my liking. Sure, OCCASIONALLY they'll get loud, but it seems like most of the time, even on defensive third downs, most people aren't even cheering.

Wow what a blown call. No elbow down. That seriously sucks

if your head hits the ground, are you considered down?

Thought you had to punt those?

you get to choose. I think teams go with a punt in most situations because you get better hang time so your coverage team can get there better. Not sure how distance usually compares between an unpressured (don't have to worry about hurrying it to avoid a block) punt and kicking from a tee.

Hearing people talking about the first onside kick where the UNI player was OB. Doesn't the ball have to touch the ground as well as go 10 yards. It looked to me the ball never touched the ground.

Even if he was in bounds it would have been illegal touching. Or am I wrong on that one?

Most onside kicks are designed so that the kicker hits the top part of the ball, driving it down off the turf close to the tee, often with the goal of producing a high bounce that can be caught by one of his teammates once it travels ten yards downfield (or bounces off a player on the return team).

I can't tell on the espn3 replay if that was the case in this instance.

JayJ79

upon further review of the rulebook, it doesn't appear to be a requirement for the ball to touch the ground in order for the kicking team to recover, as long as it traveled the ten yards.

And it would appear that due to a recent rule change, even if they do the kicking it into the ground for the high bounce trick, a player on the receiving team can still call for a fair catch if they are in a position to catch it.

So if an NDSU player would have called fair catch even though no one was near the ball, would it have been illegal touching if he stayed in bounds?

(Sorry I know this is irrelevant, it's just interesting hearing some of this.)

Can you call a fair catch on a place kick? I think you can only fair catch a punt.
