Southern Illinois has parted ways with head coach Dale Lennon, sources told FootballScoop Monday.
Lennon was 48-34 in seven years on the job. He led the Salukis to back-to-back Missouri Valley Football Conference championships in 2007-08, but went just 28-29 after that, including 19-21 in MVFC play.
Lennon also served as the head coach at the University of Mary (1997-98) and North Dakota (1999-07), leading UND to the Division II national championship in 2001.

He better get his resume submitted, it sounds like it's Cramsey's to lose at this point.

Not terribly surprising. You have some legit offensive firepower and your defense looks like swiss cheese week after week. A halfway decent defense and they are a playoff team.

So again, is the issue Lennon - or is the issue really that SIU isn't actually a great program that Kill worked a miracle at?

Yeah kinda surprised but then again not really. Feel kinda bad for the guy I do think he's a decent coach. Not sure what all the issues were at SIU or if he'd have better luck somewhere else. I think he'll land on his feet as a DC somewhere. HC not so much so unless he wants to take a step down to DII or DIII. Don't think he wants that though.

Ya I guess you could look around the years of the coaches and what happened where they went.
I think to build a program at our (ISUb) level you are going to have to keep identifying up and comers. At some point the guy that is doing the identifying will need to be replaced the same way.

This is so true. Some things can be taught but you have to have the skill set first. You can't teach speed or height ect. Some people excel in getting more out of less and at this level you have to be able to do that. Not a knock on the kids at this level it is just what it is. Many of these guys were a hair from being selected or offered from a FBS program but those programs saw something or missed something in some cases. But either way it all falls back at the HC fair or not. Part of the job and comes with the territory.

SIU has now had two coaches take what another one has built and torn it directly to the ground. Lowery did the same thing with their basketball program. Luckily they got Barry to sort of get them on the right track there. Hopefully SIU can get someone in football that can bring them back to what Kill made them. It is more fun when SIU is good.

I really did too. Realistically would it have saved him?
Iannotti is gone. Isom is now the only weapon on that side of the ball. The defense isn't going to get that much better, i wouldn't think.
SIU would have brought in 20 transfers again, and talk about how many stars they had out of HS, how fast they are, how far they broad jump, vertical, etc... but the results wouldn't have been much different from this year.

AD Tommy Bell did a good job for the few years he was at Western. He's the one who hired our basketball coach a couple of years ago...you might have seen how that's working out for us (http://www.sbnation.com/college-basketball/2015/11/13/9733594/wisconsin-western-illinois-final-score-badgers-upset). I think he'll be able to find the right guy, whether that's an up and coming DI assistant or a DII coach who's had success. Still going to be 2-3 years until the new guy has his players in place and starting though, so it'll be a bit until they have success again probably.

Sometimes it doesn't matter if you are sure you can get someone better. Sometimes you just have to make a change. Sometimes it works out sometimes it doesn't, but fresh blood is necessary at a certain point. As Bomani Jones said today about Les Miles "Scared money don't make none".

Lowery is an unfair comparison. There were issues in the hoops program other than just wins and losses. The academic issues with players had us on the verge of APR sanctions. This was never a problem with the football program. Barry was brought in to clean the APR problems as much as to coach and he has done well in this respect.

Lennon suffered from having a tough act to follow in Kill. Jerry raised expectations around here, perhaps to an unrealistic level.
The crux of the biscuit is the SIU is a) a basketball school, and b) $40,000,000 poorer than last year.
Dale Lennon always represented us with class and most are sad to see him go. Given whats likely to be out there I would have been OK with another year or two, because of the dramatic increase in the quality of skill position players, if he would have fired the entire defensive side of the ball, but my biggest beef with the guy is that he was loyal to a fault with a lot of assistants who didn't serve him well. There seems to be a lot of opinion that Nick Hill is too young to be an HC at this level and normally I'd agree but I think Hill is an exception to the rule.

Loyal to a fault and unwilling to change a staff when needed. That sounds like Farley until this past off season when we got all new offensive coaches. Didn't really change much but it's new coaches none the less

Still going to be 2-3 years until the new guy has his players in place and starting though, so it'll be a bit until they have success again probably.
No offense but I've been following SIU football since 1972--it took six coaching hires and 17 years to get get Jerry Kill--hiring is s coin flip or worse odds than a 50-50-coin flip. It will be sheer luck if Bell hits the jack pot with this one

Looks like what Patterson did with the program Craddock & Ball built at WIU.
I don't think it was so much Patterson, his 4th and 5th years as HC were two of the best years we've ever had ('02 and '03). Slumped a bit for a few years, then had a winning record again in '07, was fighting throat cancer and technically only coached 4 games in '08 and 3 in '09. Hendrickson was a good OC, but wasn't cut out for being a head coach, and outside of the 2010 season (when he had one of the best QBs, WRs, and LBs that Western has ever had plus a halfway decent RB), his record was 10-27.
So, I think the problems were more the turmoil/uncertainty with Patterson's illness, "stepping down"->unlawfully fired, lawsuit and eventual settlement, etc. and the lack of leadership from Hendrickson that caused most of the problems. The settlement sucked out a huge chunk of money from the athletics department, and the administration's treatment of Coach Patterson caused a rift between the university and many of the football alumni that played for him, leading to significantly reduced involvement and donations at a time when we had quite a few alumni playing in the NFL.

In school history, SIU has had 20 coaches and only 6 have records over .500. The odds are against us, but coaches like Dempsey and Kill show that you can succeed. It will be interesting to see who Bell comes up with.

Loyal to a fault and unwilling to change a staff when needed. That sounds like Farley until this past off season when we got all new offensive coaches. Didn't really change much but it's new coaches none the less
Part of Ash's problem as well.

I'd guess Lennon will be a defensive assistant somewhere, would be a great hire for a 3-4 team.
I don't think he ever figured out recruiting at SIU, which is why I think it is always important to hire a coach that knows your recruiting footprint. I do think he was on to something with his offensive changes, it seemed to mesh better with the recruiting area but oddly it was his defense that did him in.

One of the most decorated quarterbacks in Saluki Football history, Nick Hill returned to his alma mater for the 2014 season to begin his collegiate coaching career. After his first season, Hill was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and will continue to work with the quarterbacks.
In his first season coaching the quarterbacks at SIU, Hill's quarterbacks set a program record for touchdown passes with 29, and Mark Iannotti earned a spot on the MVFC All-Newcomer team. The program's passing and first down totals were its highest since 2007.
Hill spent the 2013 season as the head coach at Carbondale High School. Prior to his coaching career, Hill spent parts of six seasons in professional football. He played for four different arena league teams and also signed free agent contracts with the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers.
Hill was a two-year starter for the Salukis. As a senior in 2007, he was named first-team All-MVFC as he set single-season school records for passing yards (3,175), completion percentage (71.5) and touchdown passes (28). That year he led the Salukis to a 12-2 record and the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs -- the program's deepest run into the postseason since winning the National Championship in 1983.
Despite playing only two years at SIU, he ranks fifth in career passing yards (5,184), second in touchdown passes (46) and first in completion percentage (68.3). In 2013, Hill was voted to the Saluki Football All-Century team. A native of nearby DuQuoin, Ill., he is married to his wife, Alicia.
From the SIU website......holy ****. This would be like NDSU saying. HEY! Tyler Roehl (2007 NDSU senior and awesome RB for the Bison...current TE/FB coach) Wanna be head coach? :D

Reminds me a bit of the Texas Tech hiring of Cliff Kingsbury in 2013
He's now 19-18 after his first 3 seasons
6th place this year - 4-5 in conference play
8th place last year - 2-7 in conference play
6th place his first year - 4-5 in conference play
From his TTU profile
• Kingsbury returned to his collegiate roots after a one-year stint as offensive coordinator at Texas A&M in 2012 where he played a major role in leading freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel to the Heisman Trophy. Under his guidance, the Aggie offense finished third nationally in total offense by averaging 552.33 yards per game. The Aggies ranked 14th nationally in passing offense and 13th nationally in rushing offense, making Texas A&M one of the most balanced attacks in college football. For the second consecutive year, Kingsbury was named the national offensive coordinator of the year.
• Kingsbury made the move to Texas A&M from the University of Houston where he played a key role in the Cougars' record-setting 13-win season in 2011. The Cougars finished 2011 with a 13-1 record and posted the program's highest final BCS finish in school history (No. 19).
• Kingsbury served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Cougars in 2011, and was named the 2011 Offensive Coordinator of the Year by FootballScoop.com. The Cougars led the nation in total offense, passing offense and scoring in 2011, while record-setting quarterback Case Keenum placed seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting and won the Sammy Baugh Award. With Kingsbury calling the offensive plays, the Cougars averaged 599.1 total yards per game, including 450.1 through the air, while scoring over 49 points per game. The Cougars scored over 70 points in two games in 2011, and finished the season with a 30-14 win over Penn State in the TicketCity Bowl. Kingsbury was instrumental in the continued development of Keenum, who finished his illustrious career as the most prolific passer in NCAA FBS history. In his one season with Kingsbury as his QB coach, Keenum completed 428-of-604 passes for 5,631 yards and 48 touchdowns, all NCAA FBS bests.
• In his first season as quarterbacks coach at Houston in 2010, Kingsbury prepped a true freshman signal caller, David Piland, to an average of 330.1 yards passing per game, which ranked No. 3 nationally. He was named to the Sporting News Freshman All-America team.
• After a five-year professional football career, Kingsbury entered the coaching ranks in the spring of 2008 when he joined Sumlin's staff as an offensive quality control assistant. A sixth-round draft pick in 2003 by the New England Patriots, Kingsbury played for five NFL teams and also saw action in the Canadian Football League and the All-American Football League.
• Kingsbury was drafted by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots after a record-setting career at Texas Tech. Kingsbury received multiple honors including Associated Press Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year as a quarterback for the Red Raiders. In addition, he set 39 school records, 16 Big 12 marks and 17 NCAA records during his career at Tech (1999-2002). As a senior he was awarded the Sammy Baugh Trophy, presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback.
• The first in a long line of record-setting Texas Tech quarterbacks under then-head coach Mike Leach, Kingsbury recorded more than 12,000 passing yards and total offense including over 1,000 pass completions making him only the third player in NCAA history to accomplish all three. Kingsbury also excelled in the classroom as he was one of 14 collegiate football players to receive a post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame as he also garnered Academic All-America Player of the Year honors in 2002.
• A native of New Braunfels, Texas, Kingsbury graduated from Texas Tech in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in management.

I also use birth instead of berth just to see if he notices.

I don't know about the relationship between faculty and athletics at SIU, but anytime a faculty member is involved with athletics at UNI it's not a good thing

I just said he's interim coach and is interested--not that Tommy Bell was giving the job to him---
On the other hand several things that Bell mentioned as what he is looking for: Knows the Southern Illinois area, knows the MVFC and recruiting prowess--Hill has.
Daquan Isom, and most of the Fla. recruits are all his and Hill has a three star dual threat 2016 QB from Fla.. Hill may not get the top spot but I'd bet he is back in some roll for the new guy---but I've been known to be wrongxlolx

From my experience, anytime the faculty does anything that involves administration it turns out bad. It kind of goes with the narrative of "none of us are as dumb as all of us"
I wonder if they would hire Hill thinking, Lennon was holding him back from winning games.

If I was the new guy, I would keep the assistants involved in the offense and find a new defensive crew. The Salukis racked up plenty of points this year, but couldn't stop anyone.
