Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback coach Mark Whipple is set to interview with officals from Boston College on Sunday for the head coaching position.

According to a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report, the Steelers have granted Boston College permission to talk to Whipple.

Last week, Boston College coach Tom O'Brien resigned to take over at N.C. State. The Eagles went 9-3 this season and will appear in the Meineke Bowl against Navy.

Tom O'Brien leaving BC for NC State was pretty dumb IMO. A latteral move at best. Mark Whipple would be a pretty good choice to take over on Chestnut Hill.

Lateral move??? Despite consistent success, O'Brien was the lowest paid coach in the ACC and NC State is paying almost 1M more than BC was paying him...pretty nice lateral move IMO. The Wolfpack job is a much better job - NC State is a great school with great football support. BC just generally sucks.

Whipple was a great coach at UMass.

He was also a great coach at Brown and the University of New Haven. He basically resurrected Browns football program after years of 0-10/1-9 seasons. I believe his worst season at Brown was 5-5. Whipple even made New Haven into a Division II powerhouse.

I think Whipple would be a good choice for BC. There was some support for him among NC State fans before the TOB hire.

Maybe i look at it from a different perspective. I'm not a money driven person so i look at it from a program standpoint. Is there a list that shows how much each ACC coach is paid? I'm not saying O'Brien was not the lowest paid coach in the ACC but i would think Duke's coach along with Grobe at WF would make less. I'm talking about the entire salary too, bowl bonuses etc. The fact is O'Brien will not have any more success at NC State then he would have had at BC. That's why it's a lateral move. I base the move on the potential to be successful on the field, not how much more $$ you make. That's why IMO the Alabama job is not any better then WVU. NC State might have a 10 win season every blue moon but more often then not will be 8-4, 7-5 type program. That's what they've been and that's what they will always be. Boston College is basically the same thing only it's a better school in a nicer city IMO. I would have to think O'Brien could have done a lot better than NC STate. If O'Brien cares about winning a national title then leaving BC for NC State is not a smart move. If he cares about the $$ then fine but i hope he chokes on a benjamin.

Report: O'Brien lagging behind on pay

By Michael Vega, Globe Staff | November 17, 2006

Although he has 20th-ranked Boston College in contention for first place in the ACC's Atlantic Division, the $733,626 salary Eagles coach Tom O'Brien receives ranks him among the lower third of the league's 12 coaches, seven of whom earn more than $1 million annually, according to a USA Today study on coaches' salaries.

Maryland's Ralph Friedgen, who brings his No. 21 Terrapins to Alumni Stadium tomorrow, earns $1,691,864 annually with a base salary of $252,511, according to the report.

According to the newspaper, which gathered data on O'Brien's salary from 2005 federal tax returns filed by the school, O'Brien ranks 10th in the league in total compensation. Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer is the highest-paid ACC coach, with an annual salary of $1,893,000 and a total package of $2,008,000.

O'Brien's annual salary, which the report said is the same as his total compensation, is fourth highest among the league's coaches.

"I don't comment on salaries," BC athletic director Gene DeFilippo said. "And that's not an accurate figure."

DeFilippo declined to say which number was inaccurate.

According to the study's methodology, information gathered from tax returns included all income paid by the school, including benefits, perks, and performance bonuses. The returns did not break down the expenses into separate income categories and, in O'Brien's case, did not include income from outside sources.

"I don't want to talk about my salary," O'Brien said yesterday.

In addition to Beamer and Friedgen, the five other ACC coaches who make more than $1 million annually are Miami's Larry Coker ($1.8 million total; base not reported); Virginia's Al Groh ($1.785 million total; $252,000 base); Florida State's Bobby Bowden ($1,691,900 total; $352,200 base); Clemson's Tommy Bowden ($1,198,028 total; $273,028 base); and Georgia Tech's Chan Gailey ($1,009,191 total, $437,582 base).

Which basically reinforces what i said in my prior post. He is not the lowest paid coach in the league which someone said in an earlier post. Coaching salaries are very difficult to determine because the finances come from different areas. I still stand by my belief that moving from BC to NC State is a lateral move football wise. There's very little evidence that says otherwise.
