I believe this will be a slug fest. SHSU's offense, while putting up gaudy numbers, hasn't really face a good defense all season. The defense has improved, but still gives up too many big plays...especially running plays and screen passes that go for 75 yard touchdowns. I think the Bearkats will be able to score just enough to win...24-21.

For us, it all depends on how the QB plays. If he's got his head in the game and he doesn't try to do too much, we'll be fine.

If he's amped up and trying to be superman, we'll get crushed...

Three teams left in this conference race it could be a battle if McNeese loses Saturday.

Talk about opening it up again! for the Bears!

But if you've read my State of the Southland thread you can see I picked SHSU to win this game by a TD. If McNeese's defense is able to stop the Bearkats then its over minus Lamar.

Yep, great game here featuring a very good McNeese defense (#5 total D/#3 scoring D/#1 rush D) vs a very good SH offense (#2 total off/#2 scoring off/#2 first down off). Something will have to give on Saturday. Cowboys are playing very well at home but face their toughest rushing opponents the last 2 weeks of the season including the nation's leading rusher, Kade Harrington of Lamar. No doubt both teams' toughest FCS opponent so far this season will be each other this weekend.

Kats are averaging just shy of 43 pts on the road this year, including a trip to Texas Tech. I sure hope Longo doesn't abandon the run given the #'s put up by McNeese. I think this team can run on anyone & must be successful on the ground to win the game. Overstreet & Avery (both Big XII transfers) must come up big this game.

I'll go with a Kat victory in the rain @ The Hole 30-23 which will really muddy up the Southland waters coming to the finish line.

Of course I'm hoping for a Bearkat win. I don't know by how much and just randomly grabbed a football number. I don't care if its ONE point or 35...if the Bearkats win and my Bears win out we'll share that title! Yeah, that's gonna be tough..but if the Cowboys win it won't matter to us. Just trying to be optimistic knowing that even if the Bears win out and only have one conference loss to McNeese because we somehow beat SHSU that second place sucks but at least it isn't 6th place like those polls said. Wasn't Conque the only coach to give UCA a first place vote? Well he has coached for a while now!

In games like this where there is a strong defense and a strong offense, which team typically wins or wins most of the time?

Having watched a Valdosta and UNA team in division II the teams with the best defense usually won those type of games. I haven't see many strong defenses in the Southland since we arrived except for maybe a random Lion, Bearkat or Cowboy team now and then.

Our offense is dynamic, but there are three huge flaws. 1. Too many three and outs. When they run up tempo and get a three and out the defense only gets about a minute or two of rest. 2. Can't eat up clock and control the game. Although they were able to do that against TAMU-Commerce, it was the end of the game and the whole commerce team had been cramping all game. 3. Failure to dedicate yourself to the run game. OC Longo insists on passing the ball when we are dominating in the run game. We can run for 7, then 10, then 15....Then on first down he will throw it and put us in a second and long...then the D knows we have to pass and they blitz.

I know these seem like petty complaints, but they are real.

No man those are real complaints and real truths. I've seen it when a team is having running success suddenly switch to passing and flop. Talk about angry fans. Yeah, that's a very real concern there Bearkat.

I think this game comes down to JJ. He took over the game last year and we'll need the same this year. It may be my homerism but after watching JJ progress this season (and especially this past month), I'm feeling confident about the Kats chances. He's playing so efficient and poised right now.

The Cowboys will have a big advantage at home though.

It's kind of hard to compare these teams as they've only had two mutual opponents thus far (weird for this late in the season) but IMO the Kats played IWU and ACU much better than McNeese.

Collins has managed to stick around...somehow...so big advantage for the Cowboys there.

Nickels fun fact: Last game at the Hole McNeese fans and the Collins clan tried to fight me for talking smack on Collins.

IIRC home side, left side looking down from press box. They made most of the Kat fans go over there. I respect the hell out of the McNeese program but I ran out of patients that game...and it had little to do with what was happening on the field.

edit- in retrospect I think it was on the visitors side as I'm sure our smack was heard by Collins. Definitely on the left side when looking toward the field though.

McNeese has the east sideline. The visitors are on the pressbox sideline...The folks who sit on that side are generally really nice.

To find the asshole McNeese fans, you have to be on the east side, on the south 48, in the top 12-15 rows ;)

AHH that's right, makes sense now. I was definitely on the west side as I thought I remembered the press box but I also remembered being on the Sam sideline. Home side being opposite of the press box threw me off.

Adickes started in early 1992, not exactly certain how he would accomplish the massive project. The 25-ton steel-and-concrete colossus is comprised of 10-foot sections, each containing five layers of concrete reinforced with steel straps. The outside layer includes a fiberglass mesh. It was dedicated on October 22, 1994.

If it was a home game our stupid fans would probably join you in ringing. Our away crew seems to be slightly more football savvy.

I've been picked out of the stands, bitched at and threatened with a ban by UPD for yelling at our cheerleaders to shut up because we're on offense. How did the cheerleaders react when I came back to my seat? Offended to the point that they got louder despite it being detrimental to the team. SMH.

The art of sandbagging is best applied when you've got a great team. Since we don't, and will need a miracle to win, sand Bagging in this case would be tantamount to assuming the fetal position around the Alpha Dog...so..

Maybe we should get the Texas Rangers to do it? They're probably still in Huntsville investigating the mean spirited twitter accounts ( http://www.texasmonthly.com/politics/first-they-come-for-your-tweets/ ) . The assignment would be a step up for them.

"Sir do you really expect us to drive 3 miles, climb a ladder and slide in a small sheet of orange plastic? We're entirely too busy sitting on our lazy asses while prisoners do a majority of our work."

That about what they said. I told her look at what it could do for the city with a little work. I couldn't believe it when Oldkat called me and told me they did it.

The last time I checked, the Bison scored five touchdowns or more in each of the last three times they played SHSU...

I'm not sure where the notion that they only played defense came from...

I'm pretty sure they were tough on both sides of the ball...

If I remember correctly, we had another 6 to 10 players sick with the flu who could not play in addition to the suspended players. The Independence Bowl committee actually asked McNeese and Coach Jack Doland to give up our spot in the Bowl because the committee felt that the game would not be competitive and Tulsa would win in a one sided affair. They wanted to give McNeese's spot to LA Tech. McNeese and Doland refused and the rest is HISTORY as McNeese won the very first Independence Bowl!

Idiots. Very stupid thing to do when the season is starting to go well.

LB out for multiple games hurts the most. He's been dropping passes lately so this better be his wake up call. Especially since he's a senior and has/had a chance in the NFL.

Despite losing Williams and now Overstreet, we still have plenty of depth with Avery, Bulmer and Frank.

HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS - A possible Southland Conference title will be on the line in Lake Charles when McNeese hosts Sam Houston State. However, the Bearkats won't come into Cowboy Stadium full strength, thanks to a violation of the athletic department’s disciplinary policy by two football players.

Running back Jalen Overstreet, the team's leading rusher, will serve a one-game suspension for a first offense of the student athlete code of conduct, while LaDarius Brown, the team's leading receiver, will serve a multiple game suspension. Overstreet has ran for 579 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, while Brown has tallied 545 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns. and at:

You know questioning my facts often leads to embarrassment but I forgive you guys. You probably weren't aware those games occurred because, as we all know, McNeese likes to end its season the weekend after Thanksgiving.

You orginal post was:

Pfffffsss...We've done that on mediocre years..Not impressed.

Crossfire asked you to clarify that.

A trip to the national finals isn't, by any stretch of the imagination, a "mediocre" Bearkat year.

In fact, any year that SHSU wins more than 10 games is incredibly rare. Hell, you guys went nearly 50 years without doing that...

You wouldn't understand being a Mcneese fan and all but keeping track of losers during back to back natty runs can be difficult. It's not hard to remember your one playoff game every other year though.

Usage Discussion of RUN

The past tense run still survives in speech in southern England and in the speech especially of older people in some parts of the United States It was formerly used in literature, and was a standard variant in our dictionaries from 1828 until 1934. Grammarians have generally opposed it, and many people consider it nonstandard. Just about everybody uses ran in writing now.

When you have history there is nothing to say. Those that don't have history the only thing they can do is talk ****.
Your defense started the 4th with their hands on their hips. Maybe they should have played those 4th qtrs :)
