I am sure we have done this before, but it would be fun to see some of the other beautiful campuses in the world of FCS Football. I have been to a bunch of the Ivies, URI, UD, JMU, W&M, and they all have some beautiful areas on campus. So let's post some pictures.
I will start with Richmond.
Campus is about 15 minutes west of downtown.

You can see the lake in the middle of campus, with this library on it

If it wasn't for the Richmond Beltway/bypass and hustling to get to JMU I would have stopped to visit UR last week. It's definitely one school that's high up on my bucket list!
Great photos! xthumbsupx

Richmond looks amazing. I'd love to walk that campus.
Eastern Illinois is surprisingly nice.
I love Montana's campus. I have some pics, but not on this computer.
UNI's is also nice, especially in the fall. No lakes or mountains or anything though.

I think Montana has a nicer campus than Montana State but MSU has a better setting. The Gallatin Valley is a little nicer, more impressive imo. The Bridger, Madison and Gallatin ranges really paint an awesome picture. I'm not going to debate which town is better. Both are great! The differences are nitpicking a bit.

I've driven across Montana many times and there are many beautiful areas. I like the cozy feel of the Valley in Missoula. I haven't stopped much in Bozeman, but it seems like a wider, more spread out valley.

There was a several year stretch when Drexel was voted the ugliest college campus in the country by the Princeton Review and other outlets. It has improved over the last 10 years but still lags well behind UPenn, Temple, La Salle and St. Joe's.

The Citadel does not have the most picturesque vistas Like those Montana folks or WCU, but it is a unique place. The campus is actually fairly compact, centered on the Parade Field, and within the city limits of Charleston along the banks of the Ashley River. The football Stadium is just off to the left a couple blocks. The Baseball Park is in the upper left on this side of the river. The park in the bottom left is not part of campus.

The Barracks below. Each one has 4 rifle companies and staff. The biggest one in the middle also has the Regimental Band. We had had only 4 barracks since WWII but we added a fifth one recently, in the back. You can barely see 1st Battalion on the right. Except for the far left one, the other three were recently torn down and rebuilt from scratch. They all got central air and internet now....wimps.

That's crazy. I've never been there, but I must have seen a photo of that at some point in the past.
As for Western, here's a few shots from around my neck of the woods (http://imgur.com/a/YVSh4).
One thing that people always seem to comment on when they're visiting is how cool it is that our stadium is right in the middle of campus. I'm sure there's plenty of schools that have a similar setup, but it does seem like a lot of schools have their stadium out on the edge of campus or even off campus. If you spend pretty much any time walking around campus, you're going to see Hanson Field, and from inside the stadium, especially near the top of the East/Visitor/Band side, you have a great panoramic view of most of campus.

They must have cut our castle budget, we didn't get one :(

It is interesting how many schools built buildings that demonstrated the era they were built in. Richmond built their new campus in 1914, and stayed true to the original collegiate gothic architecture through WW2. In the late 50's though 60's, the school had financial difficulties and did not build much, therefore missing a lot of the more brutal / modernist buildings. When the school started to build more buildings in the 70's and 80's they tried to stay generally within the architectural style, and even more so in the 90's to today, when they went full on retro in the design so it is hard to tell when a building was built.

Where in the world did you find this photo? It has to be from the early 90s, it looks like Wa-Griz still has the grass end zone seating, the Clover Bowl hasn't had any construction for the business building, along with a lot of other campus features that haven't built/updated yet. It's fun to look at this photo and see how much campus has changed.

EIU Pemberton Hall Ghost
Pemberton students like to pass on ghost stories concerning the usually-locked fourth floor, and a plaque in the foyer dedicated to the building's first matron, Mary Hawkins. According to campus legend, a student was raped and murdered by a janitor sometime in the early 1900s, and it was Hawkins who discovered the body. The incident deeply affected her, and she sunk into depression and later committed suicide. Reports of paranormal incidents are said to have begun soon afterwards, and are usually attributed to the ghost of Mary Hawkins, still watching over her students, along with the ghost of the murdered girlhttp://www.anygivensaturday.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21599&stc=1http://www.anygivensaturday.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=21600&stc=1

Hey, something Fordham can compete in. Although the surrounding area isn't the best in the nation (sans Arthur Avenue, the real Little Italy), Fordham has an unbelievably gorgeous campus. It's probably the reason they can get so many privileged whites to send their children there for 55K a year.

I make it a point to visit college campuses when I travel. Yale was nice but, unfortunately, it's in New Haven. I liked Colgate's and Furman's campus. Cal Poly's is okay with points for being situated in SLO (beach was the best place to watch 4th of July fireworks).
Richmond's campus is really beautiful. Residents near campus have a lot of money and insulate UR from ugly parts of the City of Richmond.
Hugely biased, but my favorite is W&M. Gorgeous campus right on the edge of Colonial W'burg.

Watterson Towers is the tallest structure in Bloomington-Normal, and can been seen when entering the twin cities from either direction. The towers are also the tallest structures between Chicago and St. Louis in Illinois.
Watterson Towers is a student residence hall at Illinois State University, and is the second tallest dormitory in the world at 298.5 feet. Located in Normal, Illinois, at the corner of Fell and Beaufort Streets, it was completed in 1969. The 28-story complex holds over 2,200 students and stands at 91m (298.5 feet).
The Dobie Center at UT-Austin is considered taller in height (302 feet), but is only 27 stories of student living. It's boosted by a shopping mall located at the base of the building.
Pace University in NYC, just opened 33 Beekman which at 33 stories would replace the Dobie Center as the worlds tallest dorm, and move Watterson Towers to 3rd on the list. Although considered a "Dormitory" 33 Beekman only houses students on the 22nd -33rd floor. Not sure how much of the "skyscraper" is used for other purposes (classes, stores, etc.)

Motto – Striving For Personal Excellence In Everything That We Do
Welcome to Stephen F. Austin State University home of the Lumberjacks.
http://mediasvc.ancestry.com/v2/image/namespaces/1093/media/e96cedd9-3c4d-44bf-b578-795ba74d7c7b.jpg?client=Trees
Established in 1921 and named after the father of Texas, Stephen Fuller Austin. Located deep in the piney woods region of East Texas in the center of the oldest town in the state, Nacogdoches, which was founded as a Spanish settlement in 1716, but evidence shows of various settlements on the same site over 10,000 years ago.

Today Nacogdoches has a population of 33,000 people and serves as the county seat of Nacogdoches County.
Spreading out over 430 acres, SFA is one of four independent public universities in the state of Texas and a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools serving as the headquarters of the Association for Business Communication, The East Texas Historical Association, and the home of the National Center for Pharmaceutical Crops.
The University also owns numerous regional areas such as an Agricultural Research Center for Beef, Poultry, and Swine, Equine Center (642 Acres) Experimental Forest (2,649 acres) and a Forestry Field Station (25.3 acres)
SFA is one of only two schools of forestry in the State of Texas and the only college in the timber producing industry that SFA gives great pride in, thus the name Lumberjacks.
http://mediasvc.ancestry.com/v2/image/namespaces/1093/media/5b919b8a-37cf-4b2e-bcb2-bdedda988bb4.jpg?client=Trees
On campus you will also find a 20 acres mast arboretum and botanical garden containing over 3,000 plant species and 20 theme gardens. Started in 1985 the arboretum has grown its collection through the years with the Arnold Arboretum, the United States National Arboretum, and the North Carolina State University Arboretum to name a few. Also a big attraction is the Ruby Mize Azalea Garden, that contains 8 acres of 7,000 azaleas, 200 camellias, 200 Japanese maples, 180 hydrangea varieties, and 400 other rare ornamental trees and shrubs.

Opinions on Albany's campus are as varied as its architecture.
The Downtown Campus built from 1909-1929. Now home of several graduate schools. To the left is the former Albany High School, to be renovated for a new College of Engineering and Applied Sciences

My dad owned a construction company in the 70's to early 90's and we lived in Richmond for a few years during the 1980's when he got a big contract from the city because they were rehabilitating a lot of the older structures, especially anything pre-Civil War, and having a bit of a building and history renaissance. As with any city, it wasn't without its faults, there was quite a bit of crime at the time, but some of the architecture there is simply fantastic.

The topography of Northern Alabama always gets me. I've watched enough races from Talladega to know it's somewhat "mountainous" but it still doesn't fit the stereotype. Those are some really nice shots of Jacksonville State.
Albany's campus is really unique. It's actually improved drastically over the last 10-15 years. I'm actually a fan of the Capitol District. You're so close to some awesome outdoor locals as well as all as the major metro areas of NYC, Boston and Montreal.

Alabama has a lot of geographic diversity. The three highest points in Alabama are only a few miles from the campus. Talladega National Forest is also very close to campus.

JSU's campus is really beautiful. I've been lucky enough to be there a few times during summers and both the scenery and architecture around campus were excellent. BTW, are those dorms attached to your stadium? I'd imagine that'd be a pretty crazy experience being able to go straight from your room into the football stadium without having to walk around campus or anything.

Of all the pics I've seen Jacksonville State surprised me the most. Very nice!
A lot of the former teacher colleges have one (usually named "Old Main") or two really nice buildings. Unfortunately, they're also stuck with several clunkers that are a result of 1950s'/60's architecture.

Yes its attached. I would bet most would have pros and cons to the setup. JSU was able to make the stadium look more impressive without the unproductive cost.

I go to a tiny DII school no one has ever heard of with OK academics.
The campus was built in the 60s so it is ugly as sin. Everything inside the red line is campus more or less, and there is a bit that isn't in the shot.

Owl, hope to see you there. I'll be the red-headed guy in the lot next to the new hockey rink. I'm too lazy to post pictures, but we're often ranked in those lists for most picaresque though the leaves are long gone by next week. Looking forward to seeing Lafayette this weekend, which I haven't seen since the early 90's. Lehigh looked great the last time I was at Goodman, though that was the game in '12 where a dumpster fire in the background couldn't have spoiled my view!

Sounds good! I'm hoping the title is on the line in two weeks in Hamilton! I was there two years ago for the Lehigh game! Hopefully it's just as warm! Lehigh will be a strong following IF they beat HC.
The one thing that Colgate has that NO Patriot League team has is Seven Oaks. I've heard the course at West Point is nice and Bucknell has a solid track but they're not Seven Oaks.

VMI
VMI simply picked the wrong side, you see.
Lafayette College's first president, Dr. George Junkin, left Easton in 1848 to become president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee). During Junkin's tenure at Washington College, his daughter, Elinor, married a somewhat peculiar young Natural Philosophy professor at neighboring VMI, one Thomas Jonathan Jackson. President Junkin and Professor Jackson became the closest of friends. The movie Gods and Generals portrays the poignant end to this friendship, at the commencement of the Unpleasantness in 1861, when Professor Jackson joined the Rebel army (taking one of President Junkin's sons with him) and Junkin's loyalties hastened his return to Pennsylvania.
Unlike the rotting hulk of a building at Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson's VMI, this splendorous facility on College Hill in Easton - constructed in 1832 under Junkin's stewardship - still stands proudly at the center of Lafayette College:

Motto – Striving For Personal Excellence In Everything That We Do
Welcome to Stephen F. Austin State University home of the Lumberjacks.
Seriously? I thought University of Colorado Boulder was the home of "Pharmaceutical" crops.

Absolutely true. They didn't waste any money on architecture, despite having a school of architecture. Maybe the school of architecture uses the campus as an example of how not to make a pretty campus.

The CSA's most common weapon during The War of Northern Aggression was an Enfield model. It would have been an honest mistake considering the close ties between the CSA and The Citadel.

Absolutely true. They didn't waste any money on architecture, despite having a school of architecture. Maybe the school of architecture uses the campus as an example of how not to make a pretty campus.
I gave a presentation at NDSU to my architecture classmates about how ugly NDSUs campus is compared to UNDs. The professor was impressed to say the least.

Yes its attached. I would bet most would have pros and cons to the setup. JSU was able to make the stadium look more impressive without the unproductive cost.
I just figured you all wanted money for stadium but got approved for a dorm so you just added the dorm ton the back of the stadium. I like the idea and would provide a unique college experience

When we played there the last game of the 94 season. I did not think there was nothing cool about your stadium, it was freaking cold. Wind blowing snow flurries flying, got our ass handed to us

I can't really comment on the weather...I wasn't following WIU football until '96 and I don't remember offhand what it was like in Macomb on November 19th, 1994.
I can definitely see how losing 73-17 would make for an unpleasant trip though.

* Just did a little research and noticed WCU's acceptance rate is 35-40% range. That has to be one of the lowest for a FCS state school. W&M, Cal-Davis, Cal-Poly, Stony Brook are below 50%. Anyone else? For comparison, Fordham which is an excellent PL school, is around 45%.

I work at a private golf club in the Northeast so I come in contact with affluent parents who often have kids who are pretty darn smart. A large portion of our juniors literally go to either the top public (abington heights) or private (scranton prep) school in the Scranton area. With that said, I always recommend or mention Furman when a parent/high school student is considering a top notch southern school. A prominent board member's son did go there. He actually uses a Furman golf towel as a result. I need to snag a pic of it for the "fcs sightings" thread.

Take a little extra time and hit the FU Golf Course on-campus. It’s a really nice track. Played many a round there in my 7 years @ FU.
And, I’ve ‘heard’ that ‘some students’ would regularly ‘borrow’ the golf carts from the cart barn for late-night joy rides and/or transportation to nearby off campus apartments.
