Miami didn't look far for a coach to rebuild its struggling football program. Randy Shannon, the Hurricanes' defensive coordinator the last six seasons, has agreed to a four-year contract to become the school's new head coach, a source close to Shannon said Thursday night.
The source said Shannon was offered the job on Thursday and accepted later in the day. Financial terms weren't immediately known, but Shannon's annual salary is believed to be more than $1 million per season.

I'll call this one a questionable hire. Miami couldn't get Schiano, don't know how hard they tried. Shannon has done a good job with the defense, but really, when was the last time Miami didn't have a good defense? At least they play in the ACC which isn't a powerhouse league but the days of a dominating Miami are still a thing of the past.

I couldn't agree more, if the BCS is so bad why re-create it with something as stupid as the GPI!

I'm not a big fan of hiring coordinators from within. If a program is at the top then maybe a coordinator can maintain the momentum, however, this program needs a complete overhaul and new blood in my opinion.
Having said that I know nothing about the guy so perhaps he'll prove me wrong.

The defense wasn't the problem this year. They needed an offensive guy:bang:

I dunno, AppGuy: I thought the whole trash-talking bunch was very offensive!

Let me rephrase, they need someone who can run an offense on the football field and can put a muzzle on the players

It's not the sexiest name to hire but Shannon is a solid choice. I don't think it can be underestimated that he is the 6th black head coach in the BCS. In the Miami market? That will give them a recruiting edge. My only question is will Shannon be able to effectively turn around the discipline problems? I say yes.

That's the key. Coker seemed to follow the new 'atmosphere' that Davis instilled during his short tenure, but then seemed to slip-slide the past couple years. The debacle with FIU is what sealed his fate IMO. Without that horrible blemish, he may have survived for another year--for next year they should be a powerhouse with 19 starters returning.

Was is not Shannon's defense that suffered the majority of the suspensions in that brawl????
