A drunk driver hit and injured seven people Saturday night during homecoming activities at Delaware State University in Dover, city police said Sunday.
An out of control car also caused even worse mayhem Saturday in Oklahoma. A woman later charged with driving under the influence ran into the crowd at Oklahoma State's homecoming parade, killing four people — including a 2-year-old boy — and injuring 44, the Associated Press reported.
In the Delaware State University incident, a Wilmington woman was critically injured, guests were directed to leave the campus and remaining homecoming activities were canceled, Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.
The incident was reported at 7:28 p.m., he said.
The most-seriously injured victim suffering a broken back, broken ribs and internal injuries when the driver's runaway car pinned her against a tree in the fraternity picnic area, he said.
Gregory Ligon, 28, of Mitchelville, Maryland, was trying to park a Mercedes Benz in the picnic area but left the car in reverse gear when he got out and it started moving, Hoffman said.
But when Ligon got back into the driver's seat to stop the vehicle, Hoffman said, he pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake.
That caused the car — with the driver's side door still open and Ligon in it — to accelerate, jump a curb and cross a grassy area full of people, he said.
The most seriously injured victim was pinned to a tree by the open door, which broke off against her as the car continued, Hoffman said.
The Mercedes did not stop until it hit another tree, he said.
At that point, he said, several bystanders pulled Ligon from the car...
