View Full Version : Georgia Southern at Appalachian State, Showdown of the FCS Exiles

Mr. C

Though it isn't as exciting as the old days in FCS, Georgia Southern is at Appalachian State tonight for a nationally-televised ESPNU game at 7:30 p.m., Eastern Time. For those of you who would like to catch up on your old, championship-winning FCS exiles, here are a couple of links for you, previewing the game:

Mr. C will be posting live from Kidd Brewer Stadium on this game tonight, so check in and let's remember the good, old days of this great rivalry, even if the combatants are not in FCS anymore.

I see the students and faculty will be protesting before the game concerning them getting bent over on subsidizing athletics, among other reasons. A topic that has been discussed here many times. Probably be only a handful of hipsters show up, but sparks could fly if they get a large turnout and the tailgating fans there don't want to put up with their crap. I wanna see german shepards and fire hoses damnit!

In Boone, they use billy goats & spray moonshine instead of pepper spray.

A LOT is riding on this game.

The losing team is forced to spend a week in a usually cold & wet Alabama in Mid-December and then play a meaningless game against a mediocre 6-6 team from the MAC in front of a sparse crowd.

The winning team is mercifully euthanized.

Noticed App State's home attendance is about what it was in the SoCon. As someone who is well familiar with these two programs, I was not even aware this game was tonight. So much for raising the national profile.

I did not know it was on either. I am glad C put it up though cuz I will try and tune in to this one for a bit as I enjoy both teams and their FCS history.

The attendance numbers were touted by many move uppers as being something that would have an immediate upturn with FBS and I never thought this would be the case.

Regardless, I'm a fan of both teams.

Three incidents to add to the legend of the Appalachian State-Georgia Southern rivalry. File under the title of weird moments.

Someone stole an ambulance from inside the stadium, one of the Georgia Southern busses got stopped for speeding on the trip back and the cafeteria at Trivette Hall, about 50 yards from Kidd Brewer Stadium caught on fire during the game. You can't make this stuff up.

Were they trying to heat up stolen pizzas from the GSU bus?:)

(actually I know the pizzas were just trampled on and not stolen previously)

I watched the game and noted a lot of empty seats, at least by ASU standards. That is one thing I dislike about Thursday night games, it makes it very difficult for out-of-town fans with jobs to attend the games. Played on a Saturday afternoon, a rivalry game with a possible conference championship on the line would be overflowing with fans.

The gap between the G5 and FCS is a complete myth. That's the take-away from this. xnodx

Now some will insist that the CUSA and the MAC are somehow different, but Georgia Southern has already beaten the second or third-best MAC team by 26 points with our backup quarterback.

BTW FPC, if you like to watch ULL lose, watch when they go to Boone this year because that one will get ugly.
