View Full Version : UNI at Hobo Day

UNI travels to SDSU for the annual "Hobo Day" homecoming. SDSU's Coach Stig said on his weekly radio show that SDSU will do something it hasn't done before: play two quarterbacks. Zach Lujan's ankle sprain is apparently sufficiently healed that he and his docs gave him the green light. True Freshman Taryn Christion, having started the past two games in Lujan's absence, will share play-calling with Lujan.
Should be an interesting contest. Everyone knows UNI is a better team than the season record shows so far. Hoping for a sellout --- getting close.

Hopefully Stig comes to his senses about playing two QB's. Perhaps after he watches some UNI game film....

Ha, chill... It's better than them saying they're benching TC. I think this is their way of keeping their word on "noone loses a job to injury", and showing that TC is the better QB and gives us a better chance to win. The problem is, it really screws up the flow of the game. I hope they realize that TC is the guy for the job, and they switch to going solo with him soon. If Lujan lights it up, then I guess we'll have to hope for the best in a 2 QB system. I really feel bad for Lujan though... If he makes a big mistake, the crowd will be calling for TC. It wouldn't necessarily be fair for him to be the backup after an injury (although I could care less about this), but I think it's less fair to trot him out there like this.

I just hate the two QB system with the passion of a burning sun. I think you are right but I think it's going to cost us the game all in the name of "not losing the job to injury" and that thought makes me nauseous.

During the Dakota Marker debacle, it seemed that Jacks were easy to read for the defense. Like Jacks have running backs in and out, maybe using the different talents of Lujan and Christion at unlikely situations will confuse UNI's talented D, leading to penalties or big plays that our O failed to show or get vs NDSU.

Yeah if Stig does that he is light years ahead of Farley as a coach (which he may very well be already).
Not saying it should be difficult to do, but Farley can never seem to figure out when to use which QB. He usually switched them when it was too late. This week he might not have an option after Kollmorgen left at half again vs WIU. Although I think I and many other UNI fans would love to see Dunne get some action if Kollmorgen cannot go.

Hey, they treat those hobos like Kings and Queens on Hobo Day. We went up there for Hobo Day in 2008, went to the parade and tailgated with them. Had a great time and then saw one of the most exciting college football games I have ever seen live on top of it all.

EWU has used 2 QB's successfully in 2012, and again in the first 2 games of this year.
In 2012 Baldwin would swap out QB's for different possessions occasionally, but it was usually after a quarter or half change. I'm not sure how/why it worked but those 2 guys fed off of each other and the team kept rolling all through the season, right into losing at home in the Semi's.
This year they brought in #2 in the 2nd half against Oregon and UNI until Hennessey got hurt @ UNI, West came in mid drive and the offense kept going then too. Doubt it is a great system many other places but there might be some good opportunities this week for SDSU to keep the UNI defense on their toes with different looks.

I wouldn't call it a two QB system, but the Mocs have been bringing Alejandro Bennifield (Heusman's back up) quite a bit. He has a few throws, a rushing TD and a receiving TD, and is used about half the time in punt situations (which keeps the defense VERY honest). Often times both are in the game at the same time, with Bennifield taking the snaps. I love to see him in the game, not just because of the opportunity for exciting plays, but also because he is getting quality snaps against good competition (not the 4th qtr bench clearing). As a former center, changing QBs (especially the ones that are under center) regularly can cause serious issues on that exchange and I generally don't like it....However the way the Mocs are using it works well.

We are going to be lucky to keep this within 21 points.
Our offense will be terrible. That will lead to our defense being on the field all game. That will lead to them being tired, and SDSU scoring about 40 points on us.

Could be. The reason I say this stuff is it is how I feel. We were playing NDSU after one of the worst games I have seen us play offensively against ISUr. NDSU had just gone to SDSU and laid the smack down on their candy asses.
This week we are coming off a performance where UNI again looked lost on offense. SDSU is coming off two great performances against very good teams.
We could win if we put everything together, but with there being some injuries and questions on who will play I am not confident.

First time I've heard SDSU football referred to as candy asses outside of a bison fan saying it.

I don't think SDSU's defense is getting the credit it deserves. Outside of the second half at Kansas and a few plays in the first half against NDSU it has been very tough to score on.
Gave up just 10 points to SUU who has gone on to average 43 per game since.
Gave up just 10 points to Robert Morris.
Gave up just 7 points to Indiana State who is averaging nearly 38 per game in rest of their schedule.
Gave up just 8 points to Youngstown who is averaging 33 per game in rest of their schedule.
I don't ever take UNI lightly as they are always a tough out, but I feel pretty good about this one for the Jacks at home.

This UNI team feels like last years after the first half of the schedule...without DJ to bail it out.
So...
UNI's only conference win in MSU...by a score of 7-0. Comes on a Deiondre Hall pick 6

Have only watched 2 of SDSU's games: Kansas and the first half of NDSU. I thought SDSU kind of took their foot off the gas against the Jayhawks. The NDSU game doesn't appear to add up with the rest of your results as the Bison absolutely manhandled the Rabbits in the first half.
