Phils announced today they have traded Gavin Floyed for Fred Garcia. Seems like a decent deal to me (plus Phils get another pitcher later this week of the minor league variety). Garcia was 17-9 last year and provides the FIghtins with SIX starters---I smell another trade in the making for a reliever...:rotateh:

The Phils actually had to throw in the extra player and it's reported to be Gio Gonzalez...so it's Gonzalez and Floyd for Garcia...with Lieber looking to be on the way out (at least that's the rumors that seem to be floating around...the starting rotation will look something like this:
Freddy Garcia
Brett Myers
Cole Hamels
Adam Eaton
Jamie Moyer
not too bad at all...I'd still like to see them pick up a corner outfielder with power...and some bullpen help...

I like it. I assume Lieber is now going, the question is for who?

Lieber will probably go for a reliever, but I don't know who.
There were rumors of Lieber to Milwaukee for RHP DerrickTurnbow and OF Kevin Mench.
That may not happen now, the Brewers aren't sure if they want to trade Turnbow and the Phillies aren't sure if they want him.

Turnbow lost his job last year, I'm sure a change of scenery would be good for him

It would be nice to see Mench come home and play for the Phillies. If he could only put a whole season together...
I wonder why he always does so poorly in the second half of the season.
Garcia was a good pick-up by the Phils.

Yea, Kenny Wiliams is a goddamn idiot. Trading Freddy and we get a guy with no control and an ~ 7.50 era. lovely Kenny, just lovely! :bang: xidiotx :nonono2:

Good trade. As for the possible Brewers deal, Turnbow was "lights out" two years ago but stunk up the joint last year. Mench is an enigma with those second-half swoons. But Lieber appears to be the "odd man out" now, so we'll see what he fetches.

Too bad for Gavin Floyd as he was from Annapolis so when he was up the big team he was close for a lot of starts.

Haha...too true...some of my earliest Phils memories are times that I booed Hayes from the outfield seats at the Vet...

As a lifelong Julio Franco (and lifelong is how long he may play) fan To say that I couldn't stand 5-4-1 is an understatement.

I am too young to remember Franco on the Phils...what a time to come of age as a Phillies fan...Hayes, Steve Jeltz, Lee Elia...yuck...

Don't think it's gonna happen now. Besides, I'll take another 58 homers with Burrell behind him. The acquisition of Garcia was more important, IMO. What's impressive about Garcia is that he's got over 200 innings pitched in 7 consecutive seasons. That's great durability! I see Lieber being traded for a set-up man. Great trade for the Phils. Never liked an overrated Gavin Floyd. : smh :

I kinda agree - having a bat behind Howard would be great, but it's also something they could get during the season around the trading deadline. Soriano would've been the best option but that ship has sailed. Garcia is a good pickup and he settles in nicely as a #3 pitcher on a staff that already has Myers and Hamels. Trade Lieber for some decent bullpen help and the Phils are in good shape. If the bat behind Howard becomes a problem, make a trade during the year.

Just trying to be an optimist -
IF Burrell can somehow revert back to his 2005 form and hit 30+ HRs and have 110+ RBI, this will be some kind of line-up the Phillies have. Now I know this is a big IF, but with the free agent market being what it is, maybe it is a worthwhile gamble. Burrell is a head case and has had nagging injuries, but if he can somehow stay healthy and put his issues behind him, who knows?
Their starting pitching staff looks to be much better than the one the started last season. Maybe the planets will align just right this year...

Burrell may improve, but he could probably hit 25 homers by 'accident'. Any improvement in Pat's bat and the Phils win by 1/2 dozen games! :smiley_wi

Every Phillies fan would love to see Burrell have a career year. It's gonna be hard IMO for him to perform because he's alreay under the microscope of the fans & doesn't really have thick skin.

I like it, Freddy was losing velocity and was flat out bad for awhile last yr...Now add another year, more money and we get 2 spects back. Sure Floyds MLB stats are brutal but is still young...If anyone can solve his woes, Don Cooper can, just ask Contreras or Thornton for starters!!!

Unfortunately the glory days when they played were before my time...without checking, I think I could probably count winning Phillies seasons in my lifetime on one hand...:(

Gullick virtually acknowledged yesterday that the bullpen is now priority #1 since there isn't another quality 'bat' out there to go after. Lieber for some relief help should be sufficient.
Burrell is an enigma. He had 96-97 rbi's this year and almost 30 hrs--yet it didn't seem like that. Too many strikeouts and popups with RISP. While I agree he seems like a head-case, too me, it's always been the big loop in his swing. Though not as bad, reminds me of Dave Kingman. If he were to shorten his stroke he could be more productive, but too old to change such habits now.
Maybe there's someone coming up that will be a pleasant surprise. Haven't really followed the minors much this past year. So I don't know what's 'growing' down there...

Keep in mind, the Phillies still led the NL in runs scored last year. A good bat would be nice, but pitching was/is the priority.
Hopefully they will improve the bullpen and if they can pick up a reliable bat - great.
