Just out of curiosity, how is your school's b-ball team doing this year? I'm a huge college basketball fan once the football season is over.
Important wins? RPI ranking?
Just wondering how the FCS schools are doing so far this year...

We are having a helluva time this year. We have very few upperclassman (3) and a bunch of new faces to college hoops. Our first six were on the road and we beat Jackson State Saturday night in our home opener.
It is going to be a learning season for us in our last year of transition.

Sophs are still improving. Upset #8 Marquette this past weekend to take their tourney in Milwaukee. 5-2 and first appearance in the Mid-Major top 25 this week. Mid-Majority has NDSU's RPI at 39 right now. We think it's good, it's our 3rd year of DI basketball.

Kats were leading both Big 12 schools on the schedule for a majority of the first half and each foe came out strong in the second half, taking the game from the Kats. SHSU led for a majority of the game at Southern Miss, also falling apart (namely due to rebounds) in the second half.
Kats have beaten every team they were supposed to. Loyola-Marymount visits SHSU this Wednesday. Kats also have UC-Irvine and UCLA immediately on the schedule...

Wofford is an underachieving basketball team. They had a great win at Cincinnati where they showed us what they are capable of, then they lost a conference game at home against Western Carolina, a game they really needed to have and were very capable of getting. In fact, they haven't won a single game since the Cincy upset. They lost at James Madison (not a basketball school), at UNC-Greensboro (I can sort of live with this one, but they lost by 20+, which is very disappointing), vs. Western Carolina, and then got murdered at Michigan, showing absolutely no heart in the process. I think the fault belongs with coach Mike Young. The team is often not ready to play, or rather, their opponents are often more ready than them. If Wofford has another losing record in the SoCon, which right now looks to be very likely, Young should be fired. The team has some talent, but it is simply not translating into a lot of wins on the hardwood.

The last two years Bison mens basketball has far exceeded expectations at DI, even though they were never a contender at DII. The Women on the other hand (which I expected to have the best transition to DI) have been struggling mightly over the last two seasons.

We are 5-3 and opening up the CAA with W&M tonight. The game will be on CSN, so I plan on watching it at home. They have Temple and Georgetown coming up this month, hopefully we can make some noise. Pat Kennedy is turning the program around to where it was when I went to Towson. Back to back NCAA showings. Don't sleep on Pat's Cats this year!

That really amazes me that Kennedy is turning things around at Towson. He was pretty well disliked while he was here & didn't really seem to care about winning.
The Griz really struggled down in Orlando but I think they will be fine now that they have some games at home & they will be battled tested once the BSC season opens.

Portland State is in a rebuilding year (as usual). Washington, the top scorer on the team last year, did not return this year, leaving us with only Morrison as a starter from last year. Still, we managed to beat Arizona State in Phoenix so far so we might surprise. New coach, new look, pretty much a new team. Adapting a wait and see approach (similar to the Blazers).
The college basketball team I've always followed has been Gonzaga, whose only loss was to Butler in the NIT preseason. Victories so far include North Carolina where Heitvelt shut down Hansbrough, and the latest, a blowout over Texas in Phoenix. However, PSU stayed close with the Zags for most of the game. Free throws at the end made the game look more of a rout than it really was. The Vikings could pull more surprises, and the Zags are showing they are more than just Morrison and Bautista.

We are very down this year. However, with a new coach (a good coach, for a change), and an almost completely new lineup, we will take our lumps this year. This is more of a new construction than a rebuilding. I look for things to be back to the level we were between 2000 and 2002 very soon.

"Kennedy coached the Grizzlies to a two-year record of 23-35. He picked up his 400th career victory when Montana downed Portland State 61-49 on January 11, 2003. Montana finished third in the Big Sky Conference in 2004-05 year but won the league’s tournament title to earn its sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Four of the five starters for the Grizzlies were Kennedy’s recruits. The Grizzlies returned to the NCAA Tournament last year."

EKU is a somewhat surprising 6-3 after losing its top 3 scorers to the tune of 44 points per game after last season. That included EKU's alltime scoring leader Matt Witt.
The Colonels blew a 6 point lead with under two minutes to play against Austin Peay the last time out to fall to 1-1 in the OVC, but go here if you want to see how EKU got to overtime in an eventual win over Murray State in the previous game.

The Colonels take on Kentucky on Dec. 30 in Rupp Arena after two OVC games this coming week at Eastern Illinois and Tennessee-Martin.
One last group of stats about a much improved Colonel defense.
9 games played.
2 teams have broken 70 (Ohio State...74, and WKU...78)
1 other team has broken 60...James Madison's 66.

I get the same attitude from other Colonel fans sometimes. Among hardcore fans our football reputation is so strong historically, and our basketball sucked so bad until recently...that even Colonel fans are slow to accept that our basketball program isn't a joke anymore. I just wish we could get more people out to McBrayer Arena.

Temple's starting to show some life. We're sitting at 5-3 with a big a game against Drexel on Friday at the Liacouras Center. Drexel beat Syracuse tonight at the Carrier Dome and also beat Villanova at the ski lodge earlier this year. I think we could be in the running for a bid come March. Dunphy's a darn good coach and we have some solid players. The A-10 is ok at best with Xavier and Umass probabaly being the two best, Dayton and Rhody might be up there too. We play Drexel, Villanova and Duke in the next two weeks. If we could go 2-1 i'll be extremely excited. A 20-10 season will put us atleast in bubble talk.

Dayton's been playing very well and might sneak into the top 25 on Monday if they keep up their winning ways. Bucknell scored a big win over Xavier. Bucknell isn't where it was the last couple of years and Xavier was one of the favorites in the A-10. I can't wait for the Temple-Drexel game on Friday. Should tell a lot about the Owls. Update from BobbyMo's post:
Robert Morris is back to its winning ways. Stumbled a bit after splitting their two crosstown rivalry games (67-53 loss to Pitt and a 73-72 win at home versus Duquesne) and they started the Northeast Conference schedule a miserable 0-2. But they've bounced back with wins against Youngstown State of the Horizon League and Canisius of the MAAC.
7-3 (0-2 in the NEC) right now, just dropped out of the Mid-Major Top 25 polls last week. #153 in the RPI, a high ranking for an NEC team. Despite the two early NEC losses, Bobby Mo is still the prohibitive favorite in the NEC.
Next game is 12/30 versus Goucher College, followed up by the full-fledged NEC schedule.
As far as the ladies, they are 6-3 (1-0) right now. Their losses came at Marshall, hosting Coppin State, and at Pittsburgh. Like the men's team, they split the cross-town rivalry games (66-59 win over Duquesne, 79-69 loss to Pitt).
Other wins include Miami (OH), Kent State, Wagner (NEC), Youngstown State, and Ohio.
Next up is Longwood on 12/28, Bowling Green on 12/31, and then the full NEC slate.

6-5 at Appalachian, with the schedule we play (in-conference and out) is not acceptable in football.

Interesting article at midmajority on whether the missouri valley conference is midmajor or not:
The Missouri Valley Conference
As I often say, if your #1 media market is Wichita, you’re going to have a problem getting love and representation in the big cities and in Bristol. And here’s a little preview of the next five years: no matter how many tournament bids the league gets, you’ll hear plenty of excuses about the consistency of individual teams within the conference, and whether it’s more convenient to measure that by Tournament runs or appearances is up to the pundit. It’s already happening, and it’s a shame.
The “Is the MVC a mid-major or not” debate is one of the most boring blah-fests ever devised. Yes, they play high-major quality basketball there, but they do it on pennies-on-the-dollar compared to the SEC, or even its former leaguemates in the Big XII. It’s a special case that deserves a separate table of its own, and as long as the talking heads devalue its accomplishments and keep Creighton (12-4 vs. the Big XII over the past decade, by the way) and Wichita State out of The Club, I’ll have no choice but to continually defend its honor. And trust me, I will.

Most MVC teams have FCS football. Therefore, I think he is dead wrong.
And I agree with you completely. MVC teams have brand new, amazing facilities. We are starting to keep our great coaches. We have the tournament teams. And we are slowly getting the deserved seeding.

I was in Rupp Arena yesterday as EKU went toe to toe with Kentucky before falling 78-63...but it was only a 6 point margin with two minutes and change remaining. The margin was also 6 at halftime so UK's entire second half margin essentially came in the last two minutes with a sudden flurry of three pointers.
EKU F/C Darnell Dialls had a great game in a return to his hometown of Lexington except that he met with early foul drouble. Though Double D still had 15 points his minutes were limited in the second half, and thus the Colonels were unable to defend Randolph Morris as aggresively as we normally would have.
EKU leading scorer Mike Rose was held to only 7 points, but there was hot shooting on both ends of the court. Freshman Adam Leonard connected on 6/6 threes for EKU while Ramel Bradley drained 4/4 for UK.
There were over 23,500 on hand for what essentially amounts to a crosstown shootout.
The Colonels fall to 8-4 and remain 3-1 in OVC play. They have only OVC games remaining from this point on with the notable exception of competing in the ESPN Bracket Buster event in January...and hopefully a game or two in the NCAA tournament!

Nah, it's current - it's leaving out 3 of ASU's wins against teams that don't play a primarily DI schedule, so they can't be used in calculating a teams' RPI. (109-71 over N. Greenville, 78-63 over Montreat, and 93-53 over Brevard are wins, but not any good for calculating RPI). Again, I don't completely understand RPI, but I did read that only teams playing a primarily DI schedule count.
I saw Drexel at VCU last season - Drexel looked very strong against a VCU team that can become absolutely atrocious in the second half. I'm pretty sure VCU blew another double-digit second half lead in that one too, but the Rams managed to hit a buzzer-beater to salvage a 2-point win.

BTW, I find it kind of odd that Clemson, a team that spanked us is ranked below App, even though they're undefeated.
It's not an actual ranking of teams, it's a composite rating that includes team X's own record, the records of the teams played by team X, and the records of the teams that have played teams that have played team X (3 degrees of schedule separation, with each degree outward counting less). Many RPI websites explain the formula.
Clemson's opponents apparently don't have as strong a combined record as ASU's opponents. The Mountaineers have played some teams with very good records, including Clemson (15-0), UVA (9-3), Va Tech (10-4), VCU (10-3), and Vanderbilt (10-4). All those ACC teams play stellar in-conference schedules, and the SEC and CAA aren't too shabby either, so the ripple effect helps ASU's RPI.

I drove in from Louisville for the game. Very uncharacteristic of Morehead to make that many turnovers, but the EKU defense was brutal in the first half. Certainly a few were unforced, but I give our guys a lot of credit for turning up the pressure. I thought we also got screwed on a few calls late, but that shouldn't have really mattered. I thought the real turning point for MSU was when Julian Mascoll missed that dunk. You could feel the momentum shift at that point.
One thing I noticed was that when the EKU players gathered at the free throw line to do their pre-game "dance and chant" thing that they do...Junior Darnell Dialls (one of three players for the 2005 NCAA tourament team) shook his head "no" and moved the guys out onto the Colonel logo at the center of the court and pointed down. A good reminder from a veteran on the importance of protecting the home court.
Also, it was good to see free throw practice pay off. Rather than watch the BCS title game a few nights ago the team met to work on its horrendous free throw shooting. The result was hitting our last 14 in a row including 8 in the final 1:10 to secure the win.
I'm not looking forward to the return engagement in Johnson Arena. That's going to be one of the toughest games left on our schedule.

No way the SoCon is a two bid conference.
With so many of the teams in the SoCon with RPI's of 200s and even 300s (Elon), if you lose ONE game you are gonna shoot back. Heck, you are gonna even fall a little when you win because the RPI of these teams are so bad and the teams behind you (Appalachian and Davidson) are playing (and beating) beater teams so they will eventually jump over you.
The ONLY way the SoCon gets two bids is if Appalachian beats Davidson and both Davidson and Applachian win every other game and meet each other for the SoCon championship with Davidson winning that match-up.
As for the MVC, we have 4 arguably 5 teams worthy of a NCAA bid. But since it is so tough from top to bottom (Drake has the worst RPI and is 108 and 6 teams are in the top 50) they will beat up on each other. I think four is likely, but 3 is a possibility!

No...we host EIU on Saturday. That's already our second encounter in the Panthers this year. Then we head out on the Alabama road trip, but we stop at Jacksonville State before heading onto Birmingham to face Samford.
If Samford loses a game or two the OVC will be possibly the most wide open league in the country. I think we match up well sith Samford just because their "Princeton" offense won't throw us off our game the way it does with most teams. We play a variation of it ourselves...EKU basically runs the same offense that West Virginia does.

j/c, why was this game played at the Bi-Lo center?
Here is my opinion.
Furman used to be located in dowtown Greenville. Even after moving out of Greenville the basket ball and football games were still played in downtown Greenville for many years. Football Sirrine STadium and basketball - the old textile hall ( where Selvy scored 100 points) and the Memorial Auditorium. Football moved on campus in '81 I think. Basketball much later. So while Clemson still had more fans there was something to be said for Furman being Greenville's team. Additionally, during the 50's 60's and 70's Furman was a very good basketball program and drew fans from around the Greenville area. My recollection is that the auditorium which seated 6000 was consistently sold out during the 70's. I have talked to many people (without connection to Furman) who lived in Greenville and went to the basketball and football games that were played in Greenville. That is rare these days.
I have made a short story long, but the history helps the answer. I think Furman is trying to do something that it lost when it moved out in the country and that is re-connect as Greenville's team. It will not be easy.

Mountain Hawks Wrestling team travels to Annopolis tomorrow to take on Navy at 6:45 p.m. at Halsey Field House. Navy almost knocked of Oklahoma State last week, losing 19-17. Lehigh will be without two starters at 165 and 174, so I would call this a slight edge to the Midshipmen, but still close enough that bonus points should be the difference.
Earlier in the day, the basketball team travels to West Point to take on the Black Knights of the Hudson. A win will have the Mountain Hawks tied for first place in the Patriot League with Holy Cross, at 3-0. Team seems to be playing great defense right now, which should bode well against an Army team that appears to have some offensive trouble of late.

Well Temple officially sucks right now. After starting the season a respectable 6-4 and playing well in most of the loses we've lost 5 in a row and stand at 6-9 and 0-3 in the "ehh" A-10. I thought Dunphy would have brought this team along better by now but we seem to be getting worse. Very dissapointing. The year before my Fr. year we made it to the Elite 8 and lost a heart breaker to Michigan State to deny us a trip to the Final 4. I arrive on campus and our streak of tourney's made which was one of the longest of all time comes to and end and the spiral downward has continued.

EKU plays terrible, but just well enough to clip a struggling EIU team and improve to 10-6 (5-3 OVC). You can watch Julian Mascoll's game winner right here...
http://www.ekusports.com/article.asp?articleid=83114
Also, in the two EKU home games this week there were a total of 7 kicked balls. Four of them were today including three by EKU occuring over the span of only two EIU posessions. It was a little bizzare.

Morehead State beats UT-Martin 70-48. 6-2 in the OVC and nipping at the heels of league leading Samford.
BTW. There needs to be an AGS for basketball.

j/c, why was this game played at the Bi-Lo center?
That's the arena's real name??? Why not 'Sell High'?:D What does it stand for????
It is the same old story. Contribute enough money and we would call it the "ngineer center" :D

apps lost a 1pt heartbreaker to elon today....never felt so cheated in my life...worst refs in the world...if they had called any of the 3 painfully obvious fouls in the last minute we would have won the game
doesn't matter, we shouldn't have been that close to a 3 win team:rolleyes:

Apps need to rebound big tonight after the tough loss to Elon.
Western is tied with us atop the North Division.

Don't get used to it. It'll start dropping soon. RPI is going to get killed with all the SoCon opponents.

The last 10 days have all been SoCon opponents. Has an RPI come out since then? Did we drop?
On a side note, DJ is only 4 assists away from being 2nd place all time for career assists, and is now the ASU career leader in steals

They may have been going off old RPI data. I'm pretty sure we were up there fairly recently.

Yeah, before the Elon loss Appalachian was top ten in the RPI. But with Elon's atrocious RPI, it took a HUGE sack to Appalachian's RPI. That loss to Elon just ruined any realistic hope for Appalachian's at-large bid hopes.

I honestly don't think a SoCon team could have gotten an at large bid anyways. Yes we beat UVA, but SOS does nothing if you lose them all. We rebounded well last night, so I think its a two horse race. I also think Davidson realizes that, as they have been playing mighty well. Who knows, if they both win out other than when they face each other, they could both make it.

Davidson crushed the Citadel last night....shucks
I hope App doesn't look past UNCG tomorrow night in anticipation for the Davidson matchup on Saturday.
Which by the way I will be in attendance Saturday. Its a short drive for me from Charlotte.
Any other App fans making the trip to Belk Arena??

I think App's only hope is for Davidson to stumble against a SoCon foe. Then the head-to-head and the championship will determine if an at-large bid is reasonable.

Don't think Davidson will go undefeated in conference, but it would be nice to have the "big showdown" between 1 loss or 0 loss in conference teams

The reason I say Appalachian can't get an at large, is because your RPI is out of the thirties range (where at larges come from)and the SoCon teams have such high RPIs that you can't get back in there.

True, but between us and Davidson, probably the only 2 worthy of an at large, Davidson doesn't have the SOS we have

I saw on the ticker this morning that the JMU men's (really, they're just boys playing in a men's game) basketball team beat ODU 72-65. Did that really happen?? JMU's b-ball team sucks HARD! I don't think they've beaten ODU since the 1980's.

Lehigh hung on to beat Colgate last night 60-59 and Bucknell rallied to just get by Lafayette, 67-61, after trailing most of the game. Holy Cross is still leading Lehigh and Bucknell by a game at 4-0, but the PL is showing signs of being a very balanced league this year. No one is going undefeated in regular season, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a tie for first with teams having a 11-1 or 12-2 records.
