Mike Young is a good guy. I liked him a lot back when I was in his PE class. But he is not the answer as far as men's college basketball is concerned at Wofford College. Yes, I know the team beat Cincinnati earlier this season and that the team has had a few big wins over the years with Young. But overall, the team is running in place. There really hasn't been any improvement if you look at the team's overall performance throughout the years. The team has never posted a winning record in the SoCon. The best they have ever done was 8-8, and I believe that was under Richard Johnson, who resigned to take the AD job. Plus, I hate how Mike Young schedules non-conference games. Our only non-conference home games are against NAIA teams. Those games serve absolutely no purpose at all. They don't help the team get better. Then he schedules a murderous road schedule that HE says helps the team get better. well, I don't see that. The team still loses in SoCon play. All those games do is get the team beat up, injured, and unconfident. I can understand scheduling a few "big dogs", but he plays too many. What's wrong with playing some more mid-major teams? We have only 3 non-conference home games this year, and those are against NAIA teams.

This coach claimed to have stayed up all night preparing a game plan for Michigan, yet he got thumped, 83-49. Way to go, coach. Some game plan you had there. A lot of folks may say injury to starting point guard Drew Gibson has killed the team. But come on, he's only one guy, and he never was Michael freaking Jordan to begin with. Drew's a nice player whose game has really improved. But I bet he still isn't even on par with a lot of the other SoCon point guards. And if you can't overcome the injury of one player who isn't really even a star player, something's not right.

Now I know Wofford is a hard school to recruit at given its small size, tough academics, and limited scholorships, but look at what Mike Ayers has done in football. We need a BB coach who can do the same thing. I couldn't see Wofford getting a premier coach like College of Charleston did in Bobby Cremins, but I'd settle for a very successful D-2 coach who's ready to move up and win at the next level. I have no idea who that would be, but I know there are some out there. We have the ability to get good enough players who can be competitive in the SoCon, post winning conference records, give us a chance to one day make the Big Dance, and yet still perform in the classroom and graduate. It CAN be done! But I don't think it will ever be done with Mike Young. Richard, I know Mike's your friend and all, but do the right thing. Get us a coach that can improve our BB program. It's just no fun when you don't win.
