On Saturday Conference play began as No. 1 Jacksonville State topped Tennessee State 48-13. In non-conference action Tennessee Tech topped Mercer while Southeast Missouri and Eastern Illinois narrowly lost to nationally-ranked FCS opponents and Austin Peay and Murray State lost to FBS foes.
