Not a Cyclone fan at all, but Chizik may be able to help Iowa St take the next step.

Unbelievable...
This is big news in the SLC. Wasn't thinking we'd have a coaching search after Viator was named the HC at McNeese. Now, we got an interesting coaching vacancy to fill as McFarland did not have the success that the Jacks were expecting and actually sent it in the opposite direction of the program that Mike Santiago once had it.
Best of luck to SFA in their search. I'm really intrigued to see what names emerge in this search...

Kevin Gore speculates...
SFA is feeling the aftermath of McFarland's decision.
His departure leaves SFA in a lurch, of sorts — needing a head coach with the high school recruiting season already under way.
Two names — Sam Houston's Todd Whitten and Central Arkansas' Clint Conque — quickly come to mind.
Both were among the Top 5 candidates during SFA's coaching search that resulted in McFarland being named to his first head coaching position.
Whitten and McFarland were eventually named the two finalists.

McFarland wasn't in the most secure of positions with SFA. Another losing year and he likely would have been fired. The Jacks really screwed up by firing Mike Santiago.

The folks at SFA are very optimistic about next year's squad. SFA's squad next year loses just one offensive starter and four from the defensive side.
McFarland was actually one of the top paid coaches in the SLC at $115,000 which I think only was less than TXST's David Bailiff...

Arlington Nunn Named Interim Head Coach
SFA assistant coach takes over as interim head coach
Dec. 6, 2006
NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack assistant head coach Arlington Nunn has been appointed interim head football coach announced Director of Athletics Robert Hill Wednesday afternoon. Nunn takes over on an interim basis for Robert McFarland who resigned Friday to accept an assistant position at Iowa State.
"Arlington has served as the assistant head coach for the past two seasons," said Hill. "I felt it was important to make this move to maintain continuity within our program. We have some important spots to fill for the upcoming season and it is vital that the staff resumes its recruiting effort."
Nunn arrived in Nacogdoches prior to the 2005 season, and has spent the past two seasons coaching the Lumberjack receivers. Nunn served as the running backs coach at Ole Miss prior to joining the SFA coaching staff.
Nunn will serve as the interim head coach until a replacement is named. No timetable has been set for the naming of the full-time head coach.
