That is a bold statement. I think Ohio St, Michigan and USC would have the edge. There are also really good bands in the lower divisions as well. Valdosta St has an outstanding band.

There are also good bands in conferences that aren't exposed to SoCon or A10. Two that come to mind is the 300 member Northwestern State University "Spirit of Northwestern" and Jacksonville State University "Marching Southerners".

Where's SUJag when you need him...

We had this discussion a long while ago, more specifically comparing the better HBCU bands (Southern, SC State, etc). to the better non-HBCU bands (JMU & UMass, both Sudler Trophy winners, etc.). The HBCU bands are almost always a hell of alot more enjoyable to watch, while the non-HBCU bands almost always have a much better tonal quality. It comes down to fundamentals...it's pretty damn difficult to play a trumpet well, or any brass instrument for that matter (who cares about the woodwinds, you can't hear them anyways), when you're bobbing, weaving & dancing all over the field. That's not to say that the HBCU bands aren't musically just as talented as any other bands out there. But the tone quality is usually lacking.

Yes, it is a bold statement. Also happens to be true. I've seen alot of these bands over the years, including some of the HBCU bands, and JMU is the best. No homerism involved.

Besides the big school bands, the bands like the Force and Marching 100 are the most entertaining. The Force was great at the HU/UNH game, and I'm sure they were missing some folks.

I think we'll all wind up homers in this discussion. I enjoyed the clips of the Dukes, but of course I've gotta support my Jacksonville State Marching Southerners. Ain't nothin' like 'em nowhere. (thanks to NSUDemons98 for the props!)

2006 marked the band's 50th anniversary. At the final home game, the university sponsored a reunion that drew about 1,000 alumni. Here's a video of the band's post-game performance for an audience made up mainly of those alums, the final show of this season (http://www.hutchdeloach.com/video/jsu_50_post.html).

C'mon out to Davis in April for Picnic Day. The parade in the morning has featured up to 5 University bands (usual suspects are Cal, Stanford, UC San Diego, UC Irvine, Humboldt State and the host Cal Aggies), and the same bands then battle starting at 2pm until midnight or later. It would rock to have Southern or Grambling State come and join in the fun, and there's been whisperings about Wisconsin showing up soon...

The Cal Aggie Marching Band is 180 strong, marches Big 10 style and always has an entertaining 4-5 song show to start the parade (mixed contemporary rock and traditional pieces).

For football games, the CAMB has a new show every week, new songs, the whole kit-n-kaboodle! And, the CAMB is VERY friendly...come and play with 'em after the game if you're the opposing teams' band. Mix socially afterwards! It's what you would expect from the school with the no. 1 Viticulture and Enology program in the world...

...and the CAMB hasn't missed a football game in, like, never. I know, I know...we could only afford to send one person to the playoff game in Fargo in 1983, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do...at least she's REALLY loud.

The Marching Salukis are a little off the wall. Their "uniforms" consist of tails and hombergs. I can find audio clips but video seems to be rare. They often play at Rams or Bears games and once played the first instumental version of the National Anthem in a MLB playoff game at Busch stadium. Here is a brief video clip and a couple of audios.

If you was to ask who was the best back in the 80s and early 90s I would have most definatly said FURMAN PALADIN REGIMENT---Reason? two words (four words)... Jay Bocock...Jenson Publications. FU was the premier feature band on all Jenson Albums and if you ever hear one you would know why.
Now if you ask that question today I would have to give my props to JACKSONVILLE STATE---Reason? two words...Tubas...Balance.

My favorite dance style band is South Carolina State. Oh and by the way... unless you are a dance band, high steppin sucks.

And the qoute you highlighted expresses my disdain for bands that continue to march High Step style. The only bands that should still be doing that are the HBCU or dance bands. Also Bocook writes the music for the Cadets and other corps.

All high schools seemed to have gone to dumb and bugle corps. Easier to do and easier to play. Unfortunately, a bunch of weird music comes with it, and how exciting is it to walk in a snake line, or an amorphous blob? Not to mention pajama uniforms and a bunch of flag girls, perscussion that cannot move, etc.

If you have ever seen the flying wedge of Cal burst out of the tunnel, or any other high stepping college marching band to pre-game you know what I mean. How do you do march corps style playing the fight song for Pete's sake unless your fight song in Malagania sp?

I think a lot of high school kids now no nothing about high stepping (non corp style) that they know no difference. That is unfortunate in my opinion. By the way high step in not necessarily shuck and jive....although that is much more entertaining and exciting than corps.

If you think the corps in DCI and many of the bands that copy them are taking the easy way out then you try to join the Cavaliers (of Rosemont Ill.) and see how long you last in the hot sun going 150 plus beats per minute. The drill today is so much more intricate and difficult than it ever was with the Military Style High Steppers of the past.

Agreed. There is a reason why those types of bands (the high-steppin', dance bands) rarely compete. They will get blown off the field. Bands, like my daughter's, work long hours to, not only wow the crowd at halftime but blow bands away at competition. They are precision marchers and terrific musicians. I understand that the dance bands work extremely hard but to say conventional bands have it easier shows is ignorant.

8 to 5 marching
orthoganal (quick) turns that enhance color flashes of uniform
fight songs
only carting onto the field things that you can march with and play

What's a dance band?

Is this correct
Dance band = HBUC band
Traditional band = drumb and bugle corp?

...a tradional band would really be a traditional marching band prior to corps style....so I would categorize

Marching band
1a traditional
1b. tradional with razzmataz (HBUC)
2. Corps style

NC Aggie--If high steppin is so difficult then why have the BEST marching units in the world abandoned it (i.e. Drum Corp).

1) smoothness: it's much easier to play well when you are glide-stepping.
2) practicality: it's very hard to do modern corps-style drill while high-stepping.
3) combination: doing said 150bpm drill while high-stepping is going to kill your players, kill your sound, and look stupid. :D

That said, I've seen the D&B corps use high-stepping very effectively as a visual, but generally in military-style block drill situations and not at high tempos. The ones I've seen have been the ankle-to-knee style step rather than the Big-10 style kick step, though.

Personally, I prefer the high-stepping college bands. I think they have more variety--within the marching style, as well as musically.

Ohio State University hasn't abandoned it. Can you seen them playing "fight the team down the field" doing corps style marching.....don't think so. Check out their audio video.....there is a reason they call themselves the "best damn band in the land"

The only thing wrong with liberty's band was they were large, but without much sound. You guys had it amplified for solos, and even though they were half the size the Spirit of the Chanticleer was still louder.

FAMU stinks in football, but my respect and vote goes to their matching band, FAMU is one of these schools were the band is more important that their football team, they can put a good show anytime regardless how bad their football team is getting creamated by halftime. Usually most of the FAMU's fans leave the stadium shortly after the band performance.

That said about the FIRST NCAA Div. I-AA Football National Champion, and the team that was coached by the legendary Jake Gaither. The same Jake Gaither that was mentioned by Jim Nantz during the Super Bowl Telecast as one of the ones who should have been given a shot in the NFL. The same Jake Gaither that Tony Dungy mentioned as one of his inspirations. The same FAMU that fills the Citrus Bowl every year and the Georgia Dome every year (78,000 each) for FOOTBALL games. New Orleans mourns the loss of veteran clarinetist Alvin Batiste
Posted by By Keith Spera May 06, 2007 4:42PM
The final day of the 2007 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival celebrated the life and music of Alvin Batiste more poignantly than anyone imagined.

The modern jazz clarinetist, composer and educator was scheduled to share a two-hour set Sunday with veteran drummer Bob French at the AT&T/WWOZ Jazz Tent. Special guests Branford Marsalis and Harry Connick Jr. would sit in as a tribute to Batiste and French, two musicians whose influence far outstripped their fame.

But 13 hours before the performance, Batiste's wife and constant companion, Edith, checked on her husband as he sat in front of a television in their Uptown home. He did not respond. He had died of an apparent heart attack at age 74.

So Sunday's show functioned as a jazz funeral, but an especially joyous one.

"It's so profound that the Creator chose this day to take him," said drummer Herlin Riley, a former Batiste student. "Because now we could all get together in a celebratory fashion and pay homage to him."

Batiste was born in New Orleans in 1932. He was introduced to the clarinet by his father, who played traditional jazz. Batiste's modern approach to the instrument was derived in part from Charlie Parker albums.

He went on to largely define the improvisational role of the clarinet, an instrument generally associated with traditional jazz, in modern bebop. Along with Ellis Marsalis, Harold Battiste, drummer Ed Blackwell and others, he helped establish the modern jazz community in New Orleans.

He composed orchestral works and three operas, as well as the textbook "The Root Progression System." He toured with or wrote songs for Ray Charles, Billy Cobham and Cannonball Adderley, among many others.

In college, he became the first African-American soloist with the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra. He earned a master's degree from Louisiana State University in performance and composition.

Enduring legacy

Student teaching as part of that program introduced him to a new calling in the classroom. His most enduring legacy may be the scores of students he instructed. He co-founded the jazz studies program at Southern University of Baton Rouge, among the first of its kind in the nation, and was instrumental in the formation of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, where he continued to teach.

Indicative of his legacy, all three NOCCA seniors who performed as Batiste's band on Sunday have received scholarships to music conservatories.

"He was the ultimate educator, performer, mentor," said Astral Project saxophonist and Loyola professor Tony Dagradi. "He was all that rolled into one. There's nobody else in the world who did it as well as Alvin."

At Southern, Batiste's students included future "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, pianist Henry Butler and saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. Batiste famously dismissed Branford Marsalis from the Southern jazz band, believing he had not yet committed himself to the music. Marsalis later credited that dismissal with helping him focus on his career.
Batiste taught Riley, who went on to play with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, at Carver High School.

"He was a perpetual student and a perpetual educator," Riley said. "He would practice every morning when he woke up. He was still searching, still looking for something new in the music. And when he found it, he passed it on."

Connected to the music

Both French and Batiste recently issued CDs through Branford Marsalis' record label. Batiste took great pride in his new CD, "Marsalis Music Honors Alvin Batiste." Consisting mostly of his original compositions, it features Marsalis and Riley. Riley recalled that, after the band recorded the song "Clean Air," Batiste shed tears of joy.

"The music touched him that way," Riley said. "He had that kind of connection to the music."

Word of Batiste's passing spread quickly among musicians. WWOZ-FM dedicated much of its Sunday broadcast to his music. Artists ranging from Allen Toussaint to modern jazz trumpeter Maurice Brown acknowledged Batiste's legacy on stage at Jazzfest.

The day's ultimate tribute turned out to be the show he would have starred in.

When he first received the news early Sunday, Jazz Tent coordinator Greg Davis briefly considered canceling the show. Then Davis, the co-founding trumpeter of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, just as quickly realized that the show must go on, if with a slightly different tone.

"Some folks were making contingency plans about whether we should go on," Davis said. "But this was going to turn into a real tribute to someone people genuinely loved. These musicians really loved Bat."

'We decided to keep on'

Batiste's band of NOCCA students -- bassist Max Moran, 18, pianist Conun Pappas and drummer Joe Dyson, both 17, and NOCCA graduate and alto saxophonist Khris Royal, 20 -- received word of his passing early Sunday.

They assembled in a trailer behind the Jazz Tent and rearranged their set to proceed without their instructor.

"Mr. Batiste would have wanted us to play, so we decided to keep on moving," Pappas said.

They had performed with Batiste on Saturday at a festival in Baton Rouge. Batiste rarely shared a stage with his son Maynard, a piano player and attorney. But on Saturday, Maynard joined him on stage in Baton Rouge for what proved to be his final concert.

On Sunday afternoon in the Jazz Tent, Maynard delivered a brief eulogy for his father. Then his students went to work, opening with the Batiste composition "Picou." Branford Marsalis soon joined in.

Batiste's niece and nephew, vocalist Stephanie Jordan and her trumpeter brother Marlon Jordan, teamed up for the ballad "Here's to Life." Both were in tears by the song's conclusion.

Then drummer Bob French and his band took over, with Harry Connick Jr. on piano. French focused on the second part of a jazz funeral, when the tempo picks up and the musicians set free the spirit of the departed.

Forty minutes later, long past when Connick was scheduled to leave for his headlining set at the Acura Stage, he delivered his own eulogy. With Marsalis on soprano saxophone, Connick sang a slow, mournful "Just a Closer Walk With Thee."

Then they celebrated one last time with "Didn't He Ramble."

Later, during the all-star jazz jam that closed the Jazz Tent, nearly two dozen musicians and singers gathered onstage for a joyous "I'll Fly Away." Jazz Tent decorum was set aside as people danced in the aisles and stood on chairs.

Onstage, Riley danced with a snare drum around his waist. Tony Dagradi, trombonists Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews and "Big" Sam Williams, trumpeter Maurice Brown and singer John Boutte all joined in the Jazzfest send-off for Batiste.

"Although he's physically not here, I really believe this is what he would have wanted," Greg Davis said. "This way, his fans got to share in the tribute."

The one show that the band did this past year that is not on youtube.com is the Western Show. They opened up with a jazzy Larry Kerchner version of "Home on the Range" and then follwed up with "The Devil went down to Georgia" with NSU professor of violin playing the part of "Johnny"...it was awesome.

I don't think there is anyone on this board qualified to say who has the "BEST" band in FCS...at least outside of their personal opinion. I am a 4th year Band Director in Texas, my father is a band director and I have been around this stuff my entire life and my opinion is only worth so much. It would be hard to say who is the best b/c of the different styles and philosophies that people have on marching bands.

By breaking it down into different styles you would have bands that are of the "Show Band" style, the Traditional College Band that does 3-4 shows in a season and you have the competitive "Exhibition" type band that does upwards of 80-90 sets in a show and will only do one show all season.

If I were to say who is the best in each style in no particular order:

Show Band..Southern, Texas Southern, Jackson St., FAMU, Grambling. Of the ones I have seen in person and I, personally, enjoyed TSU the best.

Traditional College Band:
UMass, Northwestern State, James Madison, Delaware, TxState.

Competitive Exhibition Style:
Jacksonville State, UTA(though they don't have football).

I know I may have left some out but this is only one musically educated guys opinion. xthumbsupx

In my opinion BCC is better than FAMU! FAMU has gotten comfortable, while the other MEAC bands have gotten better. The MEAC is just as deep as the SWAC when it comes down to bands. No off-weeks, everyweek you lining up across from someone who has the potential to hand you an "L". FAMU took a couple last year. FAMU is not strong in the stands, BCC, NC A&T, SC State, and Norfolk are and you have to go 4 quarters plus halftime and the 5th with all of them.xnodx

Madhouse in Jacktown.
This event has grown so big, people actually be out tailgating with their families like a game is going on.
People will leave the Valley game in Itta Bena and come str8 to Memorial to set up for Sunday.
When we play Valley in Jackson on the same weekend, people don't even bother to go home after the game.
They sit out there all night waiting for this event the next day.

The McDonald's Southeastern Regional Battle of the Bands is one of Jackson's most popular annual events, generally filling the 60,000-plus seats of Veterans Memorial Stadium with spectators hungry for some marching band action.

In 2005, the event added live musical performers, further widening the event's appeal.

"I think that what we're trying to do is bring in a variety of people," says event producer John Ray of Birmingham's Just in Time Productions.

FAMU folks -- Who does your arranging? I didn't have much of a liking for the Sing, Sing, Sing arrangement, I've gone quite partial to the one we do here. There were some strange ass modulations to the melody in the FAMU one from earlier in the year.

Also, what kind of horns do you guys play on? It's got that really old, bright, bright sound to it you hear from the 70's/80's DCI recordings.

For those of you from schools that do multiple shows, what are you gonna kick off the year with this year? For those of you from schools with just one show for the whole year (like Liberty), what is your 07 field show? LU's band director is hard at work on the drill for our show and we should have it all ready to be taught by the start of band camp Aug 11

Northwestern State did a Bill Conti show that included POWER!(from the 1984 L.A. Olympics) and The Theme from Rocky(which can be found on youtube), did a halftime performance at the Saints game in New Orleans with some traditional N.O. music and then closed the year with a "classical" show that included O'Fortuna from Carmina Burana, Gvorkna Fanfare and Danse Bachannale from Samson et Delilah

Rumor for NDSU is they are expecting ~160 people in the band this year. That's small potatoes for many of your schools, but our band has been on the slide for a number of years, and this would about double last year's band (~85). New director in a newly created position (dedicated athletic bands director), new uniforms, more athletic dept support, stipends/scholarships for all band members, new percussion*, a pit (not sure I'm a big fan of MB pits, but, whatever, might as well try something new)....should be a good year!

The other rumor is disappointing...apparently the band's road trip to UNI is cancelled as UNI doesn't want to give up the seats :( Oh well, hopefully in the future!

*we actually bought new perc a few years ago, but, for some reason, got them in RED, which doesn't make a lot of sense with our GREEN and GOLD uniforms. They were pretty universally reviled, except by the perc members who were just happy to have new instruments. Now they are getting rid of the red.

Elon's Fire of the Carolinas Marching Band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLZVrIC4jmk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyJKu2TedEE

I saw the last video and remember that one. That was during my senior year @ Elon when we got all 6 of the high school county bands together to play with us. We only practiced the music together for maybe 3 hours prior to the game.

I remember it pretty well because I actually overslept for the rehearsal and missed it completely except the last 5 minutes. The fire alarm went off in my apartment in the middle of the night prior to the rehearsal and I, half-asleep, mistook it for my alarm clock and never turned it back on before I finished my shut-eye. Luckily there were so many people there, that no one noticed I was absent the entire time, including my own saxophone section (who called me and woke me up 30 minutes before practice ended). xwhistlexxthumbsupxxlolx I got quite lucky there....

In regards to the guitar hero show (the first video), I saw it live during our homecoming, and while it was a good concept, it definitely had some flaws. The electronic instruments (guitar, bass, keyboard, mic) drowned out the rest of the band. To not be able to hear the woodwinds, brass, and drums essentially takes out the essence of the marching band itself. And oh god I could not stand the vocalists. I knew who they were, as they are music majors, but they sung the rock hits as if they were theatrical numbers. I have no singing voice whatsoever, but I could have owned the stage singing "Sweet Child of Mine" the way it was meant to be sung.

Sorry for the long post...just reminiscing about the good old days....

WLBT-TV3......Read. (http://www.wlbt.com/global/story.asp?s=11180330)

The entire precussuin section, War -n- Thunder, has been zipped from the band.
20 members was suspended for the Grambling game last week and the remaining 25 was suspended this week for the grand total of 45.
out of 290 people in the BOOM, NOT ONE has said a word, talked, or come forward on this.
Not even the threat of Jackson Police getting involved or suspension has done the trick.
When this hit, we all knew nobody was going to talk.

There will be campus hearing next week to see who will be suspended, expelled, or have their schollies pulled since nobody is talking.
The President of JSU and band director Murry has already said if nobody talks, it could be the end of the season for them or the alternative would be the Sonic Boom would be the 1st marching band in history to perform without any drummers.

The Jackson State University band student injured in an alleged hazing incident off campus is not filing charges against his fellow band members.
The alleged victim - a freshman Sonic Boom of the South member who suffered a fractured shoulder - has a year to change his mind, Jackson police Assistant Chief Lee Vance said.
"There's not much more we can do without a complainant," Vance said Wednesday............

.....Mason said university officials have had difficulties getting students to talk about what happened or tell who was in charge of the hazing activities. "It's this code of silence - almost like a fraternity," Mason said

It should of course also be noted that the FAMU, JMU, and UMass football teams have each won a I-AA/FCS national championship. Perhaps this is a sign that something good is in store in the future for Catamount football. xreadx

Yes...that is a band. Although it sounds almost as good as a drum corps.

Seriously, I marched a Top 12 DCI corps that started our show pretty much at 1:25 of that video (in terms of the music) and I honestly could barely tell the difference until the percussion part near around 1:45...and only because the part is just a bit different than what we played.

Any idea about what % of the band marches corps? Or did you just take Spirit and put them in red (because really...it sounds that good).

Actually in the 00's Spirit of Atlanta used to be Spirit of JSU and Bodiford was the corps director. Of the brass and percussion there's quite a few that march during the summer. I have lots of friends at Crown, Phantom, Spirit, etc.

When it was Spirit of JSU it was pretty much just the Southerners minus woodwinds. The only difference between Southerners and drum corps is we have woodwinds and 20J's rather than Contras. That and we're huge.

Yea, they actually started the arrangement with JSU the year after I aged out. It's pretty amazing where they are now considering when I started marching, they didn't exist (started back the next year as a small corps). Wasn't Spirit technically a summer music class at JSU during that time frame? I thought that's what I heard from the friends who marched there.

That's what the band sounds like to me...someone took a drum corps, added woodwinds, and doubled the size.

If I remember correctly, the deal was, JSU students could participate in Spirit (if they tried out and made it) and could treat it as a summer "independent credit" music course. "Dues" for people who did that were actually "class fees". You did not have to be a student at JSU to participate, but if you were, you could count it as a music credit (I think it counted as a "Music Ensemble" credit for music majors and minors).

Like I said I'm not sure how it worked. Spirit of JSU was done and gone before I even found out JSU or DCI existed. But that setup would make sense.

We'll yea, I'm not going to claim they're the best FCS band ever. I've only seen maybe 30 of them, so can't really say how they stack up with everyone. But, of the bands I have seen, I think JSU, Western Carolina, and UNA are the best ones (again, just of the 30ish I've seen).
