Although pro leagues have rules that make their uniforms easy to recognize by fans and media, most college sports teams' uniforms don't really follow the "rules", since the NCAA doesn't really implement the rules regarding uniforms, particularly numbers.

Instead of spending so much money on having four different helmets and Lord knows how many different uniform combinations- why not use that money to A. reduce the price of tickets or B. help pay for something educational. I've always thought of football as being a man's game rather than a fashion show. I've seen some basketball outfits that look like something out of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Some of those gray jerseys with white numbers or whatever camo outfits that they are wearing today are really hard to read.
Yep, I'm old school. And a fiscal conservative. They spend way too much money on multiple uniforms.

According to the other forums I read all these fancy uniform combos and flashy shoes are a critical recruiting tool. Most of these players don't care what school they're enrolled in - just make sure they look flashy on the field. Modern football is a cesspool of suck.

I don't like it either but with the Oregons and even Marylands of this, don't they make the money back with the selling of their jerseys. D-II and D-III more unlikely but for BCS programs, they sell those jerseys as well I believe and get some money back so don't think they make less money.
Also, are they really paying for the uniforms or is that part of the advertising they get from Nike, Under Armor, Addidas, etc.? That I don't know.

As an official all this jersey stuff is added pain in the arse. Now not only do you hand me a 500 page rules mannual I have to know, but additional rules on what shades a uniform must be, what size the numbers must be, how they contrast and all sorts of other fun. I have had one issue in a college game with illegal jerseys. We informed coaches during warm ups what the penalty was multiple times. The came out of halftime in legal uniforms.

I would hope you are wrong on that score. In our conference I would not think that would be the case considering the overall drabness of the various school colors. Obviously, we take the cake with Brown, but several others have varying shades of Maroon. Bucknell does have orange with their blue, but have never done anything 'flashy'. I think the major problem is at the FBS level where the waste and excessive spending is rampant. Hard to believe some players choose the school to attend based upon their academic interests.
