Lafayette's Club Wrestling team will do battle with Lehigh's Club team this coming Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the famed "Snake Pit", as a 'warm up' to Lehigh's Varsity dual meet with the Drexel Dragons.
It has been reported that the last time a Lafayette wrestling team of either club or varsity variety wrestled a Lehigh team was over 60 years ago. So if any of you are in the Lehigh Valley area Friday night and want to see a little history, plus I would assume a fired up student body, Grace Hall will be the place to day.

I'd love to make it for a variety of reasons...one, I like wrestling...two, anything Lafayette/Lehigh is great...three, I have a brother that goes to Drexel that would be interested...four, I will be in the Lehigh Valley Friday night...:hurray:
However, I will be a Cedar Crest Coll. for my sister's Christmas show...
Have fun without me ngineer!

Interesting schedule--with the "Mike Caruso Tournament" at Northampton Community College. Mike must have provided the seed money in sponsoring the event. Lehigh's only three-time NCAA Champion.

What time's the show? The match between Lafayette and Lehigh is at 5:30 p.m. I would suspect the 'show' might not be until 8 p.m. Dual match will be over by 6:45 p.m. as the Varsity match is scheduled for 7 p.m. You could do both!;)

Hmm...tempting...
BTW, how is it that the two clubs teams haven't met recently/before? Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not up on my club wrestling...

Lehigh just started their club team a year or two ago, so it's a work in progress. But a bunch of students who wrestled in HS, but nowhere near good enough to wrestle varsity approached the University about starting one up and Strobel has been helpful in getting them started.
Lehigh, back when it was all-male, had the country's largest intramural wrestling tournament, but I understand that has gone by the wayside, or isn't what it used to be, so this has sort of taken its place.

Anyone know the history of Lafayette wrestling? Was there a big varsity team at one time...there's so much talent to mine in the area...

Lafayette had varsity wrestling up until the sometime in the 1980's, though they competed in a different league than Lehigh--forget the name, but I think UD may have been in it too. I know an 'old timer' who wrestled for the 'pards back in the 1930's and, I think, went to nationals. John Piper was their coach for a long time, don't know if he's still around.
I agree it's a shame they downgraded to a club team. Even if they went to a lower division, I'd think they could do well considering all of the HS talent in the area. There isn't a better region for HS wrestling than the PA/NJ area.

Thanks for the info...I wonder why they downgraded...I'd assume it had to be either a lack of interest or funding issues? There'd have to be interest in the area...of course I guess outside of Lehigh's success much of the wrestling focus is on high school...

I will be at the Lehigh - Drexel match, not sure if I will be there early enough for the Lehigh - Lafayette match, but I will try.

I just got back. I missed the Lehigh - Lafayette club meet:mad:
Lehigh beat Drexel 30 - 10. 184lb. freshman David Craig (undefeated in high school) recorded the only pin of the night and is the real deal. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't lose another match this year. He's 7 -3 so far in college).

I missed it too. Couldn't get out of the office in time to get home, change, grab an eat and get to Grace. Lehigh' clubbers did a good number on the 'pards. Considering this is only their second year in existence, they have put together a fairly decent 'program' already.
As for the varsity, they really looked great--and aggressive; except for Helfrich at 174. I'm concerned that the drop to 174 is sapping his stamina. He's 1-5, and all five losses by 1-2 pts and three in OT. However, he obviously can't beat Craig at 184, who is the real deal. Though 7-3, all three losses are to seniors or juniors who are ranked in top 5 in the NCAA.
Tough weekend at Penn State coming up. Nittany Lions currently #7, with 7 ranked in top 15. I'd be happy at this stage of the season to see us score 12 points. Have a better shot at Pitt on Saturday, though the Panthers are much improved.
Lehigh came in to Drexel match ranked #24, and should move up with that performance. Howabout 210 lb Paul Weibel at 285 roaring back from a 5-0 deficit to win 7-6!

Nope we had to drop for basically one reason--- Title IX, we could easily be a top 20 team just liek Lehigh with all the talent in the immediate area

Just a matter of putting up the money--just like Bucknell has done. They dropped wrestling back in 2002 over the same lame excuse. Alums got upset, raised the money and restored the program. The Bison, after, a couple years rebuilding, joing the EIWA this year at the 14th member. It would be great if Lafayette could generate similar interest. Think of additional zing to the overall Rivalry!
