View Full Version : Your in-person 2015 college football schedule

August 13th, 2015, 07:28 PM
I was just curious which games people planned to attend this upcoming season across all college football divisions, from Division I-A/FBS to NAIA, and obviously including Division I-AA/FCS. I personally don't expect to attend quite as many Division I-AA/FCS games as I did last season (6), but I will probably attend more college football games overall than I did in 2014.
Here's my personal, planned schedule (all times Eastern):
09/19 (Sat): Penn at Lehigh, 12:30 PM
09/19 (Sat): Princeton at Lafayette, 6:00 PM
10/10 (Sat): Tulane at Temple, time TBA (probably 12:00 PM)
10/24 (Sat): Penn State at Maryland (Baltimore), time TBA (probably 12:00 PM)
10/24 (Sat): Villanova at Towson, 7:00 PM - assuming no conflict with PSU/MD
10/31 (Sat): Notre Dame at Temple, time TBA
11/14 (Sat): Southern Mississippi at Rice, 3:30 PM
11/14 (Sat): Memphis at Houston, time TBA (hoping and thinking it will be 8:00 PM ET)
11/28 (Sat): Connecticut at Temple, time TBA
12/12 (Sat): Army vs Navy (Philadelphia), 3:00 PM - tentative
There are a few other game possibilities:
*If the 10/10 Tulane/Temple game is in the evening (highly unlikely), I will also attend either the Fordham/Penn game or the William & Mary/Villanova game, almost definitely the former, the same day.
*If the 10/24 Villanova/Towson game conflicts with Penn State/Maryland time-wise and the 10/31 Notre Dame/Temple game is an early afternoon game, I may try to attend the 10/31 Maine/Villanova game.
*There's a slim chance I may decide to go to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to see the Temple/SMU game on Friday 11/6.
*If the 11/14 Southern Mississippi/Rice and Memphis/Houston games conflict time-wise, I'll probably only attend Memphis/Houston.
Besides the aforementioned possibilities, any Division I-AA/FCS or Division II playoff games that involve one or more of the following teams - Lehigh, Lafayette, Villanova, Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, or IUP - and are played near the Allentown/Bethlehem/Easton area on 11/28 or near the Washington, DC area on 12/5 are also possibilities.
Finally, I also plan to attend a handful of NFL (specifically Philadelphia Eagles) games this coming season.

Penn State and Temple on 9/5 is up in the air. I was going to go with my PSU friend but his gf wants to go to the beach for Labor Day. My Lehigh-Lafayette ticket will be nailed down before the season starts.
Set in Stone
9/12 Lehigh @ JMU
9/26 LSU @ Syracuse - as long as it's not a night game
10/3 Yale @ Lehigh
10/22 Temple @ ECU
11/21 Lafayette @ Lehigh
Penn @ Lehigh on 9/19, Lehigh @ Bucknell 10/10 and UConn @ Temple 11/28 are also possibilities. I'm pretty sure I'll make two Temple games. If I can pull it off, a random trip on 11/14 might be in the cards as well. I'd like to get to 6-8 college games this year.....

We went to a game last year against SEMO with the whole family. My wife got tickets as some sort of faculty appreciation thing so we played nice. I brought my kids to the hill later that year to play and hang out during a game against Texas and we were in our Bison gear and got plenty of "Go Bison" calls from people.
It might be because the team sucks but they are remarkably good natured about football here.

I like to get to one SDSU Jacks game a year, and probably every other year a USD Coyotes game. This year it won't work out. Same with the Gophers, I usually get to two home game but this year they open with TCU the same night that the Mavs host UMD- so I'll be in Mankato. I do intend on going to all MSU games unless something unforseen comes up. Last year I missed the game at Winona but it was on TV so I watched it.
I plan on going to watch the junior college team that I played for up in Willmar on 8/29. Since the Mavs play on Thursday night, I will either go to St. John's or Martin Luther in the afternoon and see Crown at night. I love to see other teams play- last year I did two double headers. I've seen 331 colleges play games in various sports- it is getting harder to add new ones since the NSIC plays strictly in conference until the playoffs in football.

1) I am very surprised at how many people go to games that they're not directly a fan of, just on a casual basis. I've gone to i think as many as maybe 9 of 11 games one year and as few as five since I've started more actively attending. When I was a student it was 80-90% of home games only, no road games. Then there was two years where I had to work on weekends and it was hard to get off. I just went to one game one year and no games the following. It sucked.
2) I'm very surprised by the amount of traveling some of you all will be doing. I'm assuming it's mainly driving? We are the most hardcore of our friends, but we decided after driving to Akron that our limit is now a 4 hour maximum radius (2 hours for schools that we go to more than once). Unless it's a really marquee game (big time BCS team or national championship game). Now that we're definitely FCS4LYFE, i'll have to make trips up to the northern CAA schools. I haven't been further north than DE.
3) I'm very surprised that some of you are able to manage two games that are a couple hours apart in one day! holy moly! I think I'd die and I LOVE college football. I love attending games more than sitting at home, but it can be exhausting and expensive.
4) how do you do all of this unless you're single or retired? we just had a child this year so I'm anxious about how she'll respond to all the CFB traveling each season. We hope she enjoys it.
We usually go to at least six games home or away per season and everyone looks at us like we're nuts. My wife gets crap from her coworkers for not going to some 5K or some other event because she'd rather be in harrisonburg rootinferdukes.

Since I moved closer to the center of the country, it's been easier for me to drive to places. I can make a lot more trips now.
We have one guy on Bisonville who has been to every Bison game for 30 plus years (too lazy for specifics at this moment). He puts my lousy couple thousand miles a year to shame.

1. I recently moved back east, for now, so I want to take full advantage of it. I've only attended 1 Lehigh home game, Lafayette 2013, over the last 3+ years. I grew up a Syracuse hoops fan but when they get a good home game, LSU is, it's worth the 2.5 hour drive.
2. There are some on here that do an insane amount driving. When I lived in Montana I couldn't believe how many people did 10-12 hour roundtrips to Bozeman for games. I'm doing two, maybe three, lengthy trips. JMU is 360 miles one way, Greenville is 570 miles one way and Youngstown is 310 miles one way if I choose to do it. The craziest day trip I did was 354 miles for Temple @ Kent State.
3. Chip is the king of the FCS double header. I've done one in my life Cincinnati @ Temple afternoon Lehigh @ Penn night. Both games were at Franklin Field. That very likely is the only FBS/FCS double-header in college football history.
4. I'm super single without any kids. Attending sporting events seems far more exciting than being married with children. Or so Al Bundy taught me...lol :p

1) I am very surprised at how many people go to games that they're not directly a fan of, just on a casual basis.
I got to see some of those places as a player. Later I would go on road trips because I had former players or students on the teams. Then when I quit coaching I would go with the Gophers fan trips because I always wanted to do that as a kid. Once I made it to all of the Big Ten schools (except Rutgers since they just came in) and the old NCC (Northern Colorado (too far to make in one day) I've been to the entire NSIC, the MIAC and most of the UMAC.
Two games in one day is a little tiring but if it is on the route home not a real big deal. I saw USD beat Cal-Davis and SDSU beat Butler in the same day. I saw the University of Chicago play at Bethel last year because MSU played Concordia on a Friday night. Nice to see a historical team that used to be in the Big Ten.
I'm single and semi-retired. You can watch football on TV but nothing beats being there- each place is unique- it has different things to offer.

I come from a family that followed Southern wherever they played. From the start my wife understood, our first trip together as a couple was to a Southern game. Its harder now living in Florida but we make it happen.

All Portland State home games except for 9-26. Making the annual pilgrimage to watch the alma mater, Rocky Mountain College play at Eastern Oregon. The Battling Bears usually play either Eastern Oregon or Southern Oregon on the road every year. Last year was Ashland, this year is LaGrande. For the Montana people, think Miles City with mountains.

That's impressive! I try to get to different places but you take it to another level! Memphis at Houston should be fun!!
One of my brothers lives in Houston (but he probably won't live there much longer because he was laid off a few months ago - oil industry job), so I've been planning for a few months to visit him in the fall and hopefully attend both a Houston game and a Rice game. (As a side note, last year I went to the Eagles/Texans NFL game; my only regret is I didn't also see Temple/Houston but two trips in three weekends between DC and Houston would have cost a good bit of money and time.) The weekend of 10/31-11/1 would work better than the weekend of 11/14-11/15*, in part because I could definitely see both Rice (playing Friday 10/30) and Houston (playing Saturday 10/31), but I really want to go to that Notre Dame/Temple game. I wish that ND/TU game was almost any other Saturday excluding 9/5 (attending U.S. Open tennis in NYC), 9/19 (family visit + Lehigh & Lafayette games), maybe 10/24, or 11/21 (Lehigh/Lafayette 151 that I'll watch on TV).
*What's amazing about the weekend of Friday 10/30 to Sunday 11/1 is EVERY significant college (Division I-A/FBS and Division I-AA/FCS) or NFL team in or near Houston is playing at home that weekend:
10/30 (Fri): Louisiana Tech at Rice
10/31 (Sat): Vanderbilt at Houston
10/31 (Sat): Lamar at Houston Baptist
10/31 (Sat): College of Faith at Texas Southern
10/31 (Sat): South Carolina at Texas A&M
10/31 (Sat): Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Prairie View A&M
10/31 (Sat): Texas A&M-Commerce at Sam Houston State
11/01 (Sun): Titans at Texans
If Notre Dame/Temple wasn't on 10/31, my brother and I probably would have gone to the Rice game on Friday night, the Houston game on Saturday (and possibly another listed game depending on the VU/UH start time), and the Texans game on Sunday.

Why are you wasting time watching U of H and rice? Go to see Sam, SFA or mcneese
My brother lives in Houston, so my preference would be to see teams that are based in Houston. Among those three teams you mentioned, only SHSU is relatively close to Houston. Also to be honest, if I'm going to watch a college football game in person where I have no rooting interest, I'd rather watch a Division I-A/FBS game. (Don't misinterpret that as a lack of respect for Sam Houston State, or for that matter Stephen F. Austin or McNeese State.)

Are you divorced or retired?
Single without kids and a relatively good-paying job.
Keep in mind that on the East Coast many schools and cities/urban areas are relatively close. I'm based in the DC area, but those games in Philadelphia are only a little more than 2 hours away (and I can use Amtrak to travel to/from Philadelphia, especially if I combine a Saturday college game with a Sunday NFL game for the trip). The games in the Baltimore area (the 10/24 Penn State/Maryland and Villanova/Towson games) are less than 1 hour away. Both Lehigh and Lafayette are located about 20-25 minutes from my parents' house, and I'll be visiting them the weekend I go to those games. Finally, one of my brothers lives in Houston, and I'll be visiting him when I attend the Houston and/or Rice games (hopefully both).
*My apologies to everyone - I sound like a broken record mentioning I have a brother who lives in Houston in three consecutive posts. :)

Any Bison fans considering attending the Youngstown State game? The more I look into it, the more interested I become. I was hoping the Browns were home that Sunday. The actually play at Pittsburgh which could be doable with a reasonably priced ticket.
Youngstown is pretty much exactly halfway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and not overly far (about 75 miles to each), so that Browns/Steelers game should definitely be doable at least travel-wise.

3. Chip is the king of the FCS double header. I've done one in my life Cincinnati @ Temple afternoon Lehigh @ Penn night. Both games were at Franklin Field. That very likely is the only FBS/FCS double-header in college football history.
If you are talking about two games in the same stadium on the same day, you might be right Lehigh TU Owl - honestly I've never heard of such a thing (and the example you provided was before I started attending college football games on a regular basis). Clearing out the stadium after the day game and cleaning it up sufficiently for the night game is a task in and of itself. It's not uncommon to do that for two basketball games or basketball and hockey games at the same arena, but an arena is a lot smaller than a football stadium.
One thing is for sure, cleaning the restrooms at Franklin Field between the Cincinnati/Temple and Lehigh/Penn games was fairly quick! (For those unfamiliar with Franklin Field, it is a very old stadium and has a limited number of restrooms, all behind the lower deck stands, despite the fact it can seat up to 60,000 people.)
Incidentally, I've done A LOT of two site, single day doubleheaders in baseball and basketball as well as football, plus a few tripleheaders in basketball. I've also done a few two sports in one day doubleheaders (like Lehigh/Lafayette 150 and then 76ers/Knicks in NYC last November).

I think you mean September 19th because you referenced Lehigh's game with Penn. Assuming I'm correct, Lafayette does play a home night game the same day, against Princeton.
