Let's start the basketball discussion once again by introducing the schedules.

Harvard released its schedule last week.

Highlights:

- Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii
- Kansas at the Phog
- Canadian team (Ryerson) at Lavietes (another one is in an exhibition, McGill)
- Providence on the road
- Wofford at Lavietes

As for recruits, we have 5 of them, and 3 have international flavor: a Dominican Republic junior national team player (Weisner Perez), yet another Canadian and another one a Serbian.

Meanwhile, ETSU has added a boatload of transfers, most notably Mosquera-Perea, but they have no released schedule yet.

Starting us off early Bon! The 2015 UD Blue Hens will be picking up their annual participation trophy by mid-January, the coach is lucky to still have a job and does not have the backing of the AD's office, just friends in the right places to force the AD's hand into giving him an extension.

Coach Brad Underwood enters his third year at SFA and has assembled the deepest and most talented group of players ever for the Jacks IMO. With his success coach Underwood is finding it difficult to lure teams to play at the Sawmill in Nac. Last reports he still needs five more teams to fill the schedule.

So far, among the teams I follow:

Penn and Drexel have released their full schedules:

*Penn - http://www.pennathletics.com/SportSelect.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=1700&SPID=539&SPSID=8626 (includes Big Five games that features a Palestra doubleheader game against St. Joe's, a battle of 33rd Street game at Drexel, a trip to Washington, and an Ivy opener at home against Princeton on Saturday 1/9 - usually the Penn/Princeton games are played on Tuesday nights)

*Drexel - http://www.drexeldragons.com/schedule.aspx?path=mbball& (includes games at St. Joe's and La Salle, a battle of 33rd Street home game vs Penn, a home game at the nearby Palestra against Penn State, and trips to South Carolina and Iona)

St. Joseph's, La Salle, and Temple have all released their non-conference schedules:

*St. Joe's - games against all of the other teams in the City Six, including a Palestra doubleheader game against Penn, and neutral site games against Florida, either Old Dominion or Purdue, and Virginia Tech

*La Salle - games against all of the other teams in the City Six, including a Palestra doubleheader game against Temple, a home game (at Palestra) against Miami (FL), and a road game at "Dunk City" (Florida Gulf Coast)

*Temple - see Go Lehigh TU Owl's post above this one (La Salle game is part of a Palestra doubleheader with St. Joe's/Penn)

Lehigh, Lafayette, and Villanova have not yet released any parts of their schedule

*Villanova - most of the non-conference schedule has been pieced together unofficially; it includes Big Five games, a home game against Stanford, a neutral site game against Oklahoma, and a road game at Virginia

SFA should try to schedule NAU - since you will already be in Arizona. NAU wouldn't have an issue doing a home and home with you guys.

Last month, Siyani Chambers tore his left ACL and has taken a leave of absence from Harvard for this year. Our Dance hopes have taken a hit, but hope they won't affect us much.

Are there any UMKC fans on here? I just got my tickets for the Gopher doubleheader for Friday, Nov. 13th. For $10 you get tickets to both the women's game with Wofford at 5:30 and the UMKC game after that. Pretty good deal- men's tickets are usually $35.

Already looking forward t the season as my Terriers try to make it three SoCon titles in a row and five out of the last seven. We will have a daunting task replacing some great players that meant a lot to our program, including all everything Karl Cochran and team leader Lee Skinner, but we think we have some capable guys to pass the torch to.

Any idea what Underwood is getting paid? 300-400k range? He has to be getting something respectable. I'm surprised he's stayed at SFA this long. The guy can coach AND recruit.....

SFA 93
October 9th, 2015, 04:46 PM
Underwood's salary was $200,000 his first season at SFA and after that they raised it to $400,000 which is unheard of for a SLC head coach.

Coach Underwood has interviewed with other programs every season since at SFA.

After

2013-14 Interviewed with Marshall, rumored Missouri, and Southern Mississippi (Marshall and Southern Mississippi offered more than double but he declined)
2014-15 Interviewed with Iowa State

It will have to be a good fit for him to leave.

His son Tyler was an All-District BB player at Nac. High and is now on the SFA team. Also Underwood is very appreciative to SFA for giving him his first chance at a Division I program now in his early 50's and he loves the area and the people. He also likes how our AD Robert Hill is dedicated to taking SFA to the next level in basketball and what he is putting into the program.

I figure he is waiting for the Kansas State job which is his alma mater and where he coached for over 7 years as an assistant.

Are there any UMKC fans on here? I just got my tickets for the Gopher doubleheader for Friday, Nov. 13th. For $10 you get tickets to both the women's game with Wofford at 5:30 and the UMKC game after that. Pretty good deal- men's tickets are usually $35.

Media Poll: Harvard is fourth among media and coaches in the Ivy preseason poll. Who's first? It's Yale. They share first-place votes with Columbia and Princeton.

What happened:
Siyani Chambers lost to injury
Maodo Lo (Columbia) named to Cousy Award Watch List
Yale returns a key reserve who took a year off due to the Whiffenpoofs and also the reigining Ivy player of the year.

Only 3 non-con home games this year. I have no idea why we have so much trouble getting teams to come to Newark, it's not like we're playing a lot of ACC and Big 10 schools. We play a ton of mid-majors and low-majors and still go on the road more often than not.

I think it's a 7AM local tip off...f that noise.

10 or 11 would have been GREAT

Interesting note, the only way UNI would agree to the 8AM tip in Texas last year was it was a game that our starting PG's family could go to (he was from Pflugerville) and that SFA agreed to a return game this year. ESPN liked it, so did SFA, so it got thrown into the 24 hour deal again.

EIU adds Kansas guard.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's basketball head coach Jay Spoonhour (http://www.eiupanthers.com/coaches.aspx?rc=638) continues to bring in quality All-State players to the Panthers program as Kansas All-State guard Logan Koch signed a national letter of intent with Eastern Illinois as the NCAA early signing period began on Wednesday.

"The guy is simply a winner. He has a great head on his shoulders and is just a quality player and person," said Spoonhour. "We're fortunate to have him and people will enjoy watching him play."

Koch will be a senior at Mill Valley High School in Shawnee, Kan., where he has been a starter all four seasons for head coach Mike Bennett. During the last two seasons Koch has earned All-State honors leading his team to the Kansas Class 5A state playoffs as a junior and a freshman. Last season he scored the winning basket in the sub-state game against St. Thomas Aquinas HS earning Mill Valley a spot in the state playoffs. Koch averaged 14.3 points per game as a junior with 5.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range. A two-time All-Conference selection in basketball, Koch is also the starting quarterback having passed for more than 1,800 yards and 25 touchdowns this season.

Koch was a teammate of current EIU forward Patrick Muldoon (http://www.eiupanthers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4900) during his freshman year. He played AAU basketball for Run GMC coached by L.J. Goolsby.

"Logan brings it every day, he is the ultimate team player. He will add a level of toughness to the team," said Goolsby. "He is a great young man to be around and was a pleasure to coach"

Before the singing of the National Anthem, the announcer asked that everyone please rise, remove their hats, put their hands over their hearts and sing along. He also reminded people to remain at attention until the flag leaves the court. Amazingly everyone was able to do this rather than shout out rants, insults or anything else. I got to see NDSU whoop a preseason #1 or #2 Big Sky Montana team in Fargo. The final score was NDSU 73-53. Montana ' s #12 Bruening (spelling?) had 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Grizzlies. No one else on the Grizzly team looked that impressive to me. It was a fun game to be at with the family.

My 5 year old son was super excited to get a picture with Thunder the Bison mascot.

Meanwhile, Harvard is back on the road for a short trip against Holy Cross. The other Ivies playing along with Harvard, all on the road tomorrow: Cornell (UMass Lowell), Penn (Lafayette), Yale (Albany), Brown (SMU). Dartmouth is at home against LIU-Brooklyn.

I'm guessing the Ivies have been and always will be a one Dance-bid league. Paltry OOC showings like Columbia's as of late make me think how the level of recruiting in scholarship conferences has stepped up over the years.

Monmouth is getting a ton of love today! I always thought they fit in well with the A10! Their arena is perfect!

Interesting point. I was just coming here to see if there was any talk about them in realignment. Obviously someone else would have to make a move first, but they have to be near the top of the list even if they don't win an NCAA tournament game. The hype is all around that program, which makes me very happy since I'm from nearby.

My first thought was if they could use it to move into a more serious football conference (one that doesn't have only two good teams, one of which is transitioning). Aren't they a very possible CAA replacement for JMU when that eventually happens? Fordham probably isn't leaving the PL, so that leaves Chuck South and Monmouth competing as serious candidates. (The CAA may need someone to keep 10 teams in basketball. Football may be OK at 11 if they want to look at basketball-only options.)

Just a thought. And the basketball in the CAA has returned. 5 top 150 teams in CAA vs. Iona and Siena in the MAAC. That does include JMU, but 2 others in the bottom half (Towson and Delaware) were very good as recently as two years ago. Not sure you can say that about anyone in the MAAC bar Manhattan.
And the Battle of Monmouth makes the is quite colonial ;)

A-10 could work too as you said if they have higher aspirations, but the opening may be harder to find. SLU and Dayton to the Big East may be a few years away if it ever happens. VCU to the AAC isn't happening, especially without Shaka. Who else could leave? UMASS? Will they find a conference? Fordham? Why give up the money?

BTW, wrt Temple - I really hope Dunphy can turn it around. Yeah SJU is a bit bad/painful, but the other losses (despite a couple blowouts) aren't terrible. 18-12 is still almost a bare minimum I'd be looking at with that conference. Temper expectations, you'll be back I think. The football team got ya too used to winning!

I don't see Monmouth ever making it into the CAA as an all sport member due to their football stadium. While the renovations will certainly make it more pleasing to the eye it's still going to be very much on the small side.

Monmouth could absolutely compete in the A10 in hoops with a little more financial commitment. They have an excellent facility that would work perfectly in the A10. They're located in an area rich with basketball talent. The school is close enough to NYC and Philly but still far enough away that it doesn't have a "city" feel to it which is a nice selling point imo.

Dunphy has certainly lost his touch. I don't see this season amounting to much which will mean 3 straight missed tournaments. That combined with his already subpar tournament record should get the wheels in motion for change. The fact that the AAC has been solid but far from spectacular the last two years does not help his cause either. I don't think we'd be much, if any better, if we were still in the A10. We've gone from a solid Top 30/40 (under Dunphy, not Chaney) or so program to one that's barely hanging into the Top 100 lately...

There isn't a single team other than UNI and WSU even ****ing trying, and WSU has some pretty serious issues moving forward.

****.

At least UNI is good.

Southern Illinois has legit talent. I know I mentioned that earlier in the year but they're solid. Evansville is decent too. Their two loses have come against good teams in tightly contested games.

Wichita State is in trouble. They lost to Seton Hall today and stand at a Temple'esque 5-5 on the year. They still have a chance to make the tournament because they'll get major points for their tough OOC schedule. But at some point, and that's basically now, they need to rack up some wins....

It's not just this year. I'm looking forward, and for the first time in a long time I don't feel good about the MVC.

Evansville has the chance to be real damn good. They have the best big man, and it's not even close, in the conference. They have the leading scorer in the conference. The issue is their head coach is to college basketball what Mark Farley is to college football. Always good talent, but can't get the hell out of the way. Those two are both gone after this year and there is a big derth after those two when it comes to talent there right now.

There is a term in the MVC called "Evansvilling". It's where you lose a ton OOC and then find a way to beat the top 2 or 3 teams at least once in the regular season and really **** the entire conference when it comes to multiple bids. Well, this year they are winning OOC but their schedule is a god damn embarrassment. Marty Simmons set this up to be a "save my job schedule". Go look at it. 3 SWAC schools on it. At least when they fall apart in conference play and finish at/under .500 (they do every year, go check their history) they'll have a decent record next to their name.

Illinois State is athletic but are very poorly coached, have no basketball IQ from the players, can't play solid defense without fouling, mentally weak. That will never change as long as Muller is their head coach.

Loyola shows flashes, but the reality is they are strictly "go as Milton Doyle goes". He's gone after next year. You've followed college basketball enough to know what kind of coach Porter Moser really is.

Drake has potential if Giac can get some momentum going this year. The issue for Drake is they are Drake. He gets them to show signs of life and he's plucked by someone bigger.

Bradley...well...they are a mess. Maybe the new coach can get them going the right way. I think they have 2 or 3 players on scholarship that were there last year.

Indiana State looked good when Odom was there, but he was their entire team. Lansing is a good coach and gets his team to over achieve most years, but they are nothing to count on right now. Overachieving is still a pretty bad team for ISU this year.

Missouri State - see Illinois State and Evansville when it comes to coaching.

Southern Illinois - is/was a complete dumpster fire. Barry Hinson can get them turned back on the right path, but I don't see them ever pushing for anything above middle of the pack any time soon. I also think they are still bottom 3 right now.

Wichita State is the anomaly right now. Great coach. Great support. Tons of money. Currently have 2 All American gaurds on their team, and highly touted recruiting class after class. The issue is, outside of Baker and Van Vleet (both gone after this year) there is no one on their team that is worth a damn right now. Baker, Van Vleet, or Cleanthony Early got all of the press the last few years but the team was held together by guys like Garrett Stutz, Evan Wessels, and a bunch of other guys who weren't real highly recruited but played angry (see the WSU motto of play angry) and played within the system and played to their strengths. They were the glue. Right now these highly recruited kids aren't working hard enough to develop - straight from the WSU board. They aren't playing to the system. They are acting like a bunch of top 100-150 recruits and walked onto campus like they owned the place, owned the conference and wouldn't have to try and they would just win. Well, that isn't happening. The future isn't looking much better than the present for WSU.

WSU and UNI challenege themselves. They work to get better. The issue is the rest of the conference likes to play the victim card - much like the most the FCS and NDSU/MVFC right now. Just play the "well, we know we won't ever be that good so lets not push to get better". They don't challenge themselves OOC. They don't work hard enough. They have no vision. It's why WSU is looking elsewhere (publicly) now. It's why UNI is likely privately looking at options.

The future looks bad for the MVC right now. I hate it. It's all because the ****ers who want to brag about tradition and private/basketball schools aren't willing to work.

It's why I'm changing my tune on NDSU/SDSU. They at least give a ****. It's why I wouldn't mind seeing UNI make a massive home run hire at AD who can find a way to make a push for some sort of crazy shake up conference wise some how. Be it adding teams or leaving to find a new home in a conference that wants to get better

Good overall summery!

The loss of Creighton has proven to be bigger than originally thought imo. Their fan base, arena and track record gave the MVC three programs that looked and played the part. As it is, WSU and UNI are forced to carry the load basically by themselves. But that doesn't have to be the case. Indiana State, SIU, Evansville and to some extent Missouri State and Bradley have the potential to be "relatively relevant" nationally. Hell, Drake had a Top 10 team 7 or 8 years ago.

There's no doubt that Wichita State sent some sort of feeler the AAC's way. To what extent the interest was/is could vary wildly.

But UNI to explore options? Even to ponder it for second? I can't think of a possible landing spot given football....

The same can be said for the Ivy League. Harvard is currently 3-6 and is a night and day difference compared to last year. Next week, we will be in Hawaii for the Diamond Head Classic. Princeton and Columbia are the current league leaders; they are 6-3 and 8-5 respectively, but there are and probably will be no top 100 wins for the League as a whole this year. Cornell, Penn and Yale are all 5-5; Harvard has 2 others who are 3-6: Brown and Dartmouth.

Without getting too specific so I don't start anything..."feelers" have been out for a while. Part of the wrestling move was heavily involved with feelers. It's why the new AD is crucial. There won't be a new stadium at UNI, so the capacity thing is an issue. The UNIDome is bigger than the Kibbie Dome though. The upgrades planned to it will make it a very nice home for years to come - no matter the level.

As much as I hate Creighton, love the fact they are **** right now, etc... the fact is we are starting to see the MVC's lack of foresight come into play and they are the prime example of it. Any kind of effort put in a couple years ago keeps Creighton and might have landed SLU along with another MW basketball team. A league with UNI, Creighton, WSU, SLU and let's say Belmont for ****s n giggles would be a hell of a foundation to build a 12 team league on.

However, what the MVC has prided itself on for decades has now likely cost them dearly moving forward.

What has Evansville ever done to show they have potential? They have finished at/below .500 in the league all but one time since in their 23ish years in the conference. Drake had one magical season and has been bottom four in the conference every other year since about 2001. Indiana State has so many money issues, no AD, and no lack of direction they are a lost hope other than a good year every now and then. Bradley is a massive dumpster fire that will take a decade to put out, if they can keep a coach that long that knows what he's doing (that isn't currently the case).

I enjoy Loyola beating Creighton. I don't miss Creighton fans. I do miss the fact the fact, that even though they **** the bed every March, they drove the league to get better.

Evansville was pretty darn good in the 80's and 90's iirc. Perhaps it was the t-shirt jerseys that gave them extra mojo at the time? More recently they always seem to be in the 18-14/20-12 type rut of records....

Evansville has been to the NCAA's just once since joining the MVC.

They looked good against a poor conference back in the 80s.

Since joining the MVC they are 314-338

Just 3 20 win seasons....more seasons with less than 10 wins than 20 or more

Since 1949 Evansville is 219-274 vs MVC teams.

Evansville, Drake and Bradley are the epitome of what's wrong with the MVC

Those numbers seem about right for Evansville. They're basically middling with some signs of ineptitude and promise...

I don't live in the Midwest obviously but there seems to be an aversion to NDSU and SDSU due to politics and such. I think both would be quality additions.

The Horizon keeps chugging along. There's some damn good basketball being played in that league right now. If you took the best teams from the MVC and Horizon you'd have a damn good conference imo.

Meanwhile...

Harvard has just turned in a top-100 upset of BYU, leading by as much as 16 points, only to hold on to a slim lead and into OT. Score was 85-82. Up Next: Auburn. xlolx

Looks like they can this year but not next year.

The Bison are 9-3 and face MWC 1st place Utah State 7-3 (5-1 at home) at 9pm central in Logan, UT. This should be a good test to figure out where the Bison stand heading into conference play.

UCA received it's "thumbs up" from the NCAA to be eligible for the post season tournament next year. Hard to recruit when you end the season....at the end of the season. Now the team avg. g.p.a. is 3.2 and the players are starting to catch on to the importance of team work. IT will continue to be a struggle until we get real ball players here, not just ed-heads. Looking from the game perspective that is..so no disrespect to the current team but they don't want it. They are just going through the motions.

Two years ago:
UCA kicked off 11 or 12 players from the team.
UCA fired its head coach and assistants.
UCA was placed on a 2 year post season ban for g.p.a. issues.
Basically the program was dead.

Today:
UCA has 12 players with great g.p.a.s
UCA is eligible for post season next year.
UCA has a really good coach who has built a termite mound out of a pile of crap. I don't envy the dude.

The fans will be patient but I really see massive improvement in the next two years.

Harvard continues its giant-slaying streak, taking down top-150 Auburn by 18! 69-51 is the score. We will play either Oklahoma or Hawaii (the winner of that game later tonight) on Christmas Day.

That's an interesting game! Logan was a brutal place to win when Stew Morrill was coaching the Aggies. Not sure how it is these days...
