Not that bad for JMU that they score on this play. It was likely to happen, and now JMU has some time to work with rather than stopping them and giving up a TD after wasting 30 secs.

Shouldn't have been this way...

Why don't they go to the 8 autos, and then 8 at larges.. then seed them 1 thru 16???

One of those was dropped because he got nailed by one of YSU's guys. But you are right, YSU was not playing good defense on that last set of downs. They almost got the ball inside the YSU 20.

Congrats to YSU and all the Gateway teams today. A Gateway sweep.
:hurray:

Well...not to be too cruel to the OVC but two of them were over teams from a league that hasn't won a playoff game since 2000 and such that none of the current programs have won one since 1996 (Western Kentucky won playoff games in 1997 and 2000 but became a member of the Gateway in 2001). In fact, one thing I'm kind of jealous of is that the Gateway always gets matchups with the OVC in the first round. ALL of McNeese's first round games in their playoff history have been against teams from the Big Sky, A-10, and Southern (with the one Southern Conference opponent being Georgia Southern at Statesboro back when they'd never lost a home playoff game).

Tennessee Martin did well today though. Looked for a while there like they were going to break the OVC drought today against a very good SIU team.

True... but when you 'get rid of' one one the top 4 or 5 teams in the first round, *note* without a true upset, it tends to make the whole bracket look bad....
Heck with the 'regional" idea... just rank then.. and what falls... falls...

Back at my hotel after the game.

Contrats to the Penguins...you guys have a great team and either your QB or our pass D surprised us. :) The defensive stop when we had the ball in the 4th, up by 11 really killed us and shifted the momentum back...that first down play when Holloman took a loss will be the one killer play that I'll remember about this game.

You guys have a great stadium and have a lot to be proud of.

Good luck the rest of the way!

JMU Band - Wow - we could use a lesson although they were pretty ignorant when they were playing over our band during the pregame ceremony and the military tribute. Zetts played the best game of his career - flat out and we needed it. I cannot believe they ran the QB sneak on 4th an 1 - they were getting 6-7 yards a pop on the sprint draw zone they ran all day. Bad decision!!! Oh well - we have another home game!!! :smiley_wi Just coming down from the high at the game - stands were out of control and we need to pack the house next week. I don't know if i can take another one of those - reminded me too much of the 99' game against FAMU. Just rambling and coming off the buzz.....:beerchug:

I was right there and have it on my tv and replayed it over---pathetic call. That didn't go our way now did it?

The "he would have come down in bounds if not pushed out" doesn't apply in college football. I cried about one of those involving Marco Thomas this year.

OKAY.. I meant each of these teams deserved to be in Chattanooga.. You guys will get your time with YSU in 2 weeks if we each win... IF
Even though it was early in the season, you have to remember that Appalachian State beat James Madison pretty easily (21-10, with a garbage time TD by the Dukes). The road to Chattanooga for Youngstown State almost definitely goes through Boone (no offense to Montana State, but it's hard to see the Bobcats winning at Kidd Brewer Stadium after a trip across the country). Good win and impressive comeback by the Penguins. Tom Zetts played what had to be the game of his life. What a clutch performance. And you had to be wowed by Marcus Mason and his work on that final drive. That was almost Richie Williams-type stuff.

What I saw of things today, the officiating was about as bad as it has been everywhere all year. There was a Patriot League crew at Appalachian State today and they blew several calls (particularly some of the pass interference calls) on both teams. They wiped out a great Dexter Jackson reverse for an ASU TD on a phantom holding call on All-American Matt Isenhour and that call on the fumbled kickoff by John Holt was terrible. Coastal Carolina should have had the ball back.

The calls that struck me in the JMU game were the double personal foul where tackle Corey Davis should have been sent packing and the play where the YSU receiver was knocked out of bounds on a catch and they mistakenly called it out of bounds. I'm sure there were plenty of others. Where was that crew from? OVC? I almost forgot the terrible spot on Justin Rascati's fourth and one run. JMU should have had the first down by a half-yard, but then spotting has been one of the things officials doen here have goofed up all season.

I don't think that was a bad call. I think the rule in college is that it doesn't matter if you're pushed/carried out of bounds. If you come down out of bounds you're out of bounds. If at least one foot doesn't come down in bounds it's incomplete regardless. Maybe somebody can check on that but I'm pretty sure that's the rule.

I think they said it was a SoCon crew. All those calls were bad (I was shocked at the "out of bounds" call and the spot!). You're right about Davis too. Punched him in the head!! I'm glad he stayed, but in retrospect we could've been planning for next year.:)

no you're right...You have to get 1 foot in bounds no matter what...you can catch the ball at the numbers while in the air, if the LB catches you and carries you OOB, then you are OOB...learn the rules man, this one is basic!!

Wow, where are the JMU fans at today???? They pick today to finally be quiet?

They should be proud, they have a hell of a team. That being said, walking off the field without shaking hands shows that they're as classless as the commentary we heard from other A-10 powerhouse coaches this week.

You guys sold out against the run, which is exactly what I would have done. That soft zone you play behind the blitz killed you...that and the poor coaching going for it on 4th down up by 11......BONEHEAD call.

I think the Tom Zetts doubters have a little something to think about now. :hurray:

Actually, we were only up by 3 when we went for it. I agree that it was probably a bonehead call, but I have approximately zero faith in our kicker. There's probably a 50-50 chance that we still would've only been up 3 if we'd went for the field goal (plus, I think it was a bad spot but we still should've played defense after that!). And, if we made it, we still wouldn't have won (assuming the game played out the same way). I would hope that most fans aren't in hiding and that the posters are making their way back from the game.

Having said that, Zetts was incredible and the game plan for YSU was as close to perfect as you can get against the Dukes. The shotgun rollout avoided the pressure and exploited our secondary which hadn't been tested because of the pressure we were getting during the year. I think Mickey got way outcoached. He made great adjustments at halftime but we broke down midway through the 4th.

Congrats to YSU!! Like the A-10, it's too bad that you have to try and knock out a conference colleague next week.

Mickey Mathews blew that game with dumb play calling when he had the lead in the 4th quarter. Good job by YSU in taking advantage of the Dukes poor play calling and execution in the 4th. Good game.

Okay, its a day later and even though it didn't matter to me who pulled this one out, it was still one heck of a game. I was yelling at the top of my lungs in my livingroom.
I think we can all agree the SoCon refs blow. That really hurt both sides. I wonder what would have happened if some of the calls were made correctly?
Great game, I hate that somone had to lose this one, but that is the way we play Chamionship Football.

The problem with going for it on Fourth down is that the opposing team gets a tremendous lift if they hold...a change of momentum and that is exactly what happened...If they miss the field goal it does not have the same psychological effect on Youngstown as making a great stand. And if they make the field goal, it stands to have a negative impact on Youngstown....

They don't have a 'pushing out of bounds' call in college football, its cut and dry if you are out of bounds it doesn't matter how you got there and he was out of bounds. Huge missed 'holding call' on the run to the 1 yard line during YSU's final drive. Did you see Matthews giving it to the ref on the sidelines, I saw the play the same way. JMU jobbed and I don't even like JMU.

JMU up 31-20 with 8 minutes left....we should be playing next week....no doubt......I'm not taking anything away from YSU......JMU should have put that game away.

Regardless of the bad spot on the 4th and 1, which the refs blew, JMU had no pass defense.

Good Luck to YSU...

Maybe that's why:rolleyes: Maybe there's a reason ysupenguins.com has hundreds of members and your site has a handful. You just slammed his site, but it's the best YSU fan site on the internet.

.

As someone who watches the lines and little of the rest of the game, it appeared the Duke D-line was getting almost no push in the fourth quarter. A full game of pass rushing will drain those big guys a lot faster than playing against the run. I'm guessing the Penguin coaches knew that too and may have been banking on it since their vaunted runn9ing game never really needed to emerge.

I hope so. We lose a lot of very good players, and I hope some of the lesser seasoned players can pick it up...

We should have a very athletic QB next year, but if he'll be as much of an impact player as Rascati, who knows!

I'd like to play YSU on a more regular basis (and YSU has played some A-10 teams OOC recently, only we haven't played a whole lot of Gateway teams) but I think since we both have tough conferences already, it might be too much... (although we did schedule ASU this year) Again, who knows ;)

Congratulations to both YSU and JMU. That was an awesome game between two powerhouse teams. It is a shame they were matched up this early in the playoffs because both teams deserved to play in the second round. I was greatly impressed by both teams.

JMU Band - Wow - we could use a lesson although they were pretty ignorant when they were playing over our band during the pregame ceremony and the military tribute.

That wasn't the band...some of our fans were singing our alma-mater while yours was being sung.

I love our fans, but that was just not cool, and I want to apologize for that. That was not our greatest moment. :(
