I don't know the exact number of students either but I think they allocate around 2k tickets for the students. They occupy that corner sections of the east side (sections 118 & 119.) They charged $7/ticket for students last year and are dropping that to $4/ticket this year because of the deficit.

Yep--that's it, although the right hand side is cropped off. Visitors side, from which pic is taken, is same size as home side. This pic was taken at the Bucknell game in October 2000. Attendance was 16,906--largest non-Lafayette crowd since team moved into Goodman in 1987. 16,000 permenant seats plus alot of the students prefer to sit on the grassy embankment on the horseshoe end. October is the best month at Goodman when South Mountain (in the background) is brilliant yellow and orange.

Official numbers for seating in Bowers is a little over 14K. but I was told that if seating was opened up on the grass areas that the actual capacity should be over 20K. The largest crowd I have ever been around in Bowers was when Alcorn St. came to Huntsville when Steve McNair was QB. Attendance was over 16K for that game.

Lehigh is in the "Lehigh Valley" in Pennsylvania, in or near the Poconos/Appalachians. If I'm not mistaken, their campus is actually divided into 3 parts with a mountain between them. Someone from Lehigh will correct me on that, I'm sure. Nice campus and very nice stadium with the hills in the background.

I took three of these before practice one day, and the last one from the sideline when the team started warming up an hour before game time. The stadium isn't so bad for saying the team just came back almost three years ago after an 18 year hiatus.

Woodward Field at EWU leaves a little to be desired.

South Mountain (elev.1,150) is in the background. The major undergraduate campus is on the north slope. Campus changes in elevation from about 350' to about 850' at the top of fraternity row in Sayre Park. The Mountain Top Campus is home to the Lee Iaccoca Center and major research laboratories. Lehigh purchased from the now defunct Bethlehem Steel about 15 years ago. Beth Steel at one time owned the valley on the south slope and swapped land with Lehigh so the University could build their new Goodman Campus where most of the athletic facilities are. Beth Steel got the mountain top (that occured in the mid 1960's). 30 years later Lehigh had it back.
The Lehigh Valley and South Mountain in particular is considered the gateway to the Pocono Mountains. The Blue Ridge, where the Applachian Trail crosses is about 25 miles due north.

There are plans in the making, I don't know exactly what the time frame is but I know there is a phase by phase project going on to get the stadium to 30,000 before 2010. I know first it starts with the press box and luxury boxes. Any Griz fans have specific info on this?

Nice job! I was up to the Bronx two years ago for that wild one that went into overtime. It must feel weird for the visitors not to 'feel' anyone behind them on their sideline, but actually may be a help since there is less noise interfering with the sideline communications. Looking forward to the return visit this year in November.

those are some pretty sweet Ivy stadiums. We played at the old Princeton stadium a few times as well as Harvard and Brown while I was there. All were very cool for us to play in, given the histories (particularly Harvard). We played at Franklin Field after I left ... that one would have been very, very cool to suit up in, imo.

It can be done, the key is to lower the level of the playing field. Once that area is excavated you can extend the slope of the stands into the now created pit.

Yeah, they did that at Ohio State a couple years ago too. I guess since they're planing on replacing the surface I guess they might be able to do that in Harrisonburg too.

A JMU could possibly answer for sure, but I heard they originally planned to lower the field and add seats where the track currently sits. However, this idea was scraped becuase of the shallow groundwater table beneath the stadium. Maybe the shallow groundwater table also explains the ridiculous crown on that field. When you stand on one sideline and look across the field you can only see your opponents from about the waist up!

Early days at Lehigh....

Wow--that's a classic photo. It appears to be 1905 on Taylor Field before old Taylor stadium was built. I always thought our old Stadium was so good. I have a brick from the old Taylor when it was torn down in 1987. It sat about 17,000, with a very noisy 'upper deck' made of steel where the student sat and rhythmically stomped their feet to sound like a huge freight train ('Engineers', remember?), plus the pitch was great and close to the field, looking right down on the action. Goodman has nice amenities, but the seats are far back from the sideline to accomodate a soccer field, too.

That shot is from the 2002 Cal Poly game. You can tell because it was the year that Volek adopted the Mickey's Malt Liquor Logo. Back then you could also get free tickets at any Sac area Autozone.

The 1999 game was the last victory for CSUS and they had temporary seating set up outside the track. They have some money for stadium improvements but unfortunately those probably won't begin until there is enough money for the gym and rec center. It is a shame that track fever has taken over Sacramento because Hornet stadium would be much improved if they could relocate the track.

That is the first game of last season against SDSU, I think, though I was wrong before. :o.

One major problem with Davis is the quarter system, we always seem to have 2-4 games before the quarter even starts.

This next season our first game is on 9/3, as well as three more on 9/10, 9/17 and 9/24. Instruction begins 9/29

The first two are home games, the third is at Stanford and the last is the causeway classic. All these games have the potential to create intrest and draw fans, but the timing will hurt them.

The first few games are pure football with no classes to worry about and with no students around, this town is dead and the focus is almost all on football. Woodward Field at EWU leaves a little to be desired.


It's a nice little stadium, though certainly not the upper caliber of some other 1-AA schools. In fact, the stadium was renovated recently and is more than adequate for a program with a smaller fanbase like EWU.

Meanwhile, if I was a Sam Houey fan, I wouldn't be dissin' anyone's stadiums. From the aerial photo shots of your stadium, it looks like a football/track field in a grass bowl with seating tarp rolled out along the hillsides for fans to picnic while they watch the game. From an asthetic perspective, it has to be one of the worst stadiums in 1-AA. Absolutely terrible. :nod:

Thanks everyone for posting pics of their stadiums. A lot of them are really nice.

Some of the Ivy League stadiums are just downright awesome. I like the Yale Bowl, Harvard's classic horseshoe stadium, but my favorite was Princeton's stadium. Very, very nice with the English medieval castle architecture on the cornerstones of the stadium.

Other programs's stadiums that caught my eye were (in no particular order):

-Western Carolina (really nice setting along the Appalachian Mountains, and an impressive facility)

-Western Kentucky (fat 1-A caliber facility with upper decks, but can the fans fill it?)

-Youngstown State (I've always thought the Penguin Palace was the staple 1-AA facility that other programs measured themselves by. Great design and comparable seating capacity with 20,000+.)

-Georgetown (very nice facility that the Hoyas are building)

-Fordham (reminds me a lot of Washington-Grizzly Stadium before it expanded)

-Appalachian State (another Washington-Grizzly retro-fit. I like the mountain setting, and the stadium is designed for expansion.)

-Lehigh (I had no idea the Engineers had such a nice stadium--and they fill it up 16,000+! Nice setting along the rolling hills of lower appalachia. It looks like an incredible atmosphere, especially during the peak of the fall follage)

-Georgia Southern (another Washington-Grizzly Stadium retro-fit. It's almost a replica of what Wa-Griz was before it expanded, and it has lots of room for future enhancements.)

-Northern Iowa (I wouldn't say this is my favorite stadium, but it's definately interesting. It's like a mini-hyprid of the Astrodome and the Metrodome, with that roof bubble on top. Still, it looks like there's room for future seating expansion in that thing.)

-Delaware (Classy, structurally balanced facility that packs an enviable 22,000 per game.)

-Montana State (The Bobcats stink up the joint, but it's a classy 1-AA venue.)

There's a brand new track-only facility on the new part of campus, around CISAT. That track is no longer used.

Thanks, about 21,139. They are basically permanent grandstands(some seatbacks), with an ok press/luxury suite. The main jem is the infrastructure where network quality lighting, scoreboard and a world class track were donated by Spanos and the Anderson Family.

Two recent student refs were passed approving a new arena and stadium redo with health & conditioning center. Price is $128M, $60 has been raised.

Thats alot of cabbage, so time will tell if the new President is successful in his fundraising.

Never heard of the Coast. I know Gil's has dollar beer and dollar burgers on Monday nights. I've played VB in that pit a couple times. Had some friends who were KA. I thought about pledging mysefl, but I couldn't afford the dues. I wish I could have though. They are about the only frat I would join on the Texas State campus. They are just my style. Down to earth, Southern boys. I love San Marcos, and yes, that is true about walking everywhere. Well at least the Square. Next time you are in town stop by Katy Station (at the corner of Cheatham and Edward Gary) during happy hour. .99 Ritas and 1.50 domestics. Pretty good food though, just sometimes you have to wait awhile because everything is hand made. Hope you can make it for a Texas State game this year, it ought to be a good season. :)

edit: Don't konw if you know or not, but Texas State has an enrollment of around 27,000 now. If you went here 20 years ago that is quite a large increase. Most alumni I have told that to can't believe what they are hearing.

I'm a big fan of Western Carolina's stadium. I love how the tall main grandstand is completely nestled into the hillside. I also love that new addition to the other side as well. I actually did a sketch of WCU's stadium for an assignment in one of my architecture classes.

Thanks a lot for the help mountianeer, and for the nice comments from others. IMO the reason we can't put it together has been poor play calling. It's hard to do anything when you are always faced with 3rd and long. Maybe we can get that right this year. Anyway, here are some pics I took at the battle for the jug this past year.

Here's the 11 million dollar stadium renovation going on at Drake... They tore the first 4 rows of seats out to extend the track surface to get the NCAA Championships and possibly the Olympic Trials. This phase also includes the addition of field turf and a new scoreboard on the south side of the stadium, leaving the north side as now an open end (where the big scoreboard once was). They are going build a new press box and outer plaza in phase two. The total seating will decrease at the horseshoe shaped stadium will decrease down to 16,000.

I like what you've done with your stadium at EWU. But I think you need to get rid of that track surrounding the perimiter. It looks like you don't need to use it there anymore, because you've installed grandstands at the endzones. Maybe you could rip it out and pour some concrete or plant some sod in its place??

New locker rooms, press box, entrances/ticket booths, new playing surface, (replaced about every 7 to 10 years), and TV monitor's that are connected to the jumbotron feed in the concession stands and walkway down below was added in the last 3 years.

Estes Stadium can hold around 10,000 seating wise. Estes Stadium started its major facelift in 1998 when the home side was torn down and what you see was built. The locker room, athletic training room, weight room and the entire football program are housed in the $5 million building. The $100,000 scoreboard pictured above was also in place for the '98 season. The visitors stands are the most recent update to Estes. The old, silver bleachers were removed in 2004 and replaced with a brick exterior seating area with the visitors locker room also inside. The field has also been updated with a new drainage system and a Tifton Bermuda surface. There is also word that a new replay/video board screen will be built in time for the 2006 season, but I have gotten no word on that yet. Prior to the renovations in the mid 90s, the Yale Bowl did seat more. The capacity prior to the renovations was 70,896. The top 10 or so rows of the Yale Bowl were removed because they were deemed unsafe. Since Yale wasn't drawing the type of crowds like it used to, it made no sense to replace the seats.

Back in the 1930s, there was serious talk of adding a second deck to the Yale Bowl. If that happened, the capacity would've swelled to over 100,000. Back then it might have been practical, but today it isn't. Even the current 64,269 capacity is more than enough, even with the Yale/Harvard game.

Here's few quick snap shots we took at the Idaho State vs. Montana State game. Bobcat Stadium is a nice little stadium with the exception of the endzone stands which are an abomination. There's talk of "bowling" the endzone and adding more luxery boxes. I hope it's a reality sooner than later. As it stands now, Bobcat Stadium is nicer than most, but could always use a little improvement here and there.

Prior to the renovations in the mid 90s, the Yale Bowl did seat more. The capacity prior to the renovations was 70,896. The top 10 or so rows of the Yale Bowl were removed because they were deemed unsafe. Since Yale wasn't drawing the type of crowds like it used to, it made no sense to replace the seats.

Back in the 1930s, there was serious talk of adding a second deck to the Yale Bowl. If that happened, the capacity would've swelled to over 100,000. Back then it might have been practical, but today it isn't. Even the current 64,269 capacity is more than enough, even with the Yale/Harvard game.

By comparison to the rest of I-AA, it still amazes me that Ivy League schools can draw over 50K to some games and have stadium's like this one (64K) for what is pretty much non-scholarship I-AA football.
Yale draws 50K to a game and the rest of us jump up and down when we have 23 or 24K. ;)
