One of the most mysterious stadiums in the world. Nobody seems to have successfully taken a good picture of the stadium or of any game action in the stadium. :confused:

I never realized that until now. I guess part of it is because of how awkwardly the stadium is built. For one, the home and visitor bleachers are right there at ground level, unlike most stadiums, which have a small set of steps that lead to the first row. In other words, raised off the ground. Another thing is that our bleachers seem extremely long.

Maybe one day I'll take pics myself, and volunteer them to the HU sports dept. :) ;)

It appears that it will have 9,000 actual seats, and room for another 4-5,000 on the tiered grass berms behind the endzone. The fundraising is now just starting with about $13 million raised of the $22.5 million total cost. The new stadium is expected to be completed in time for the 2008 season.

YSU Is One of the best in I-A. I was at Montana when YSU Upset them there in I beleive 1997 and that was awesome as well. Very Loud there. YSU Is loud too but Wash-Griz hurts your ears!

The track is necessary unfortunately. UR is a very land locked campus. The land value of the adjacent neighborhood is far in excess of any urban section of Richmond.

I'm an architecture student who's basically obsessed with stadiums. And one day on MS Paint I decided to draw an elevation of a hypothetical small stadium for a made-up Division II team called the Minnesota Tech Blue Knights (or MPI, for Minnesota Polytechnic Institute).

It's a 4,500 seat stadium with a grandstand on one side. I got a lot of inspiration from St. Cloud State University's new stadium.

I know it's only for a DII team, so sorry that it's not I-AA. :)

I believe that's the '98 game when Lafayette flew Maroon Lafayette Flags from every flagpole and during the course of the game they all came down in LU student's hands in retaliation for the year before when Lafayette students stole the Lehigh flag from Goodman. Oh yeah, and the game was a rout.

Any word about whether UNH plans to build a new stadium? I'd like to take the "historic" out of Cowell Stadium and get a new, larger capacity facility. The University shelled out some big bucks for the Whittemore Center (hockey), and I would like to see the same attention paid to football.

I think that when the stadium was built in the 1920's it was supposed to be like the visitor's side, all the way around, a sort of mini Yale Bowl. That would not have held as many people as the current stadium does, so maybe the plans were changed. Most Spiders can't wait to finally get the football team back on campus where they belong.

WUT you asked about the visitors or west stands, the oldtimers tell me the stadium was originally used as a race track for mini racers. The east or home stands were built much later, but I'm not sure of the time frame. The turf is probably the best I have ever seen. It was dug out and drainage installed then sand and then the top soil--it was done to host the NCAA soccer championships. I've been told over $1mm was spent on the turf alone about 10 years ago.

Built in 1926 and inagurated by Lafayette's last national championship team. Today, the stadium still has it's Depression-era facade and looks as if not one repair has been made since it's construction. The seat-benches are three seperate pieces of wood (almost all rotting, with screws sticking out in most places). However, rumor has it that the Field is getting a complete make-over in 06-07; new aluminum bleachers, track removed, FieldTurf, lights, some sort of mini-fieldhouse where the scoreboard is, and a sunken-in field with some sort of concourse circling the field. It will only make it a better place to watch a game. Falls are quite picturesque, with a mountain cascading in the background and woods off to the west. The Kirby Sports Center, a really sweet, L-shaped building, encases half of the north side-line almost all of the east, and has a nice glass facade where the "L" bends 90 degrees. There are usually about 14,000 plus for the Lafayette-Lehigh game. Good seasons average 6500, bad averaged 3500 per game (don't see many more of them happening :) ). These pictures were taken right before the start of the 11/5/2005 Colgate game. Please excuse the sorry field. About every field in the Northeast looked like that thanks to an October hurricane on a gameday.

Franklin Field is definitely a cool place to see a game and Penn usually has a very decent team. Franklin Field is one of those older stadiums where the amenities are not state-of-the-art, but they're not bad and the atmosphere is great. Combine it with a trip to the city and it is well worth it.

Now that's a quality scoreboard - I love having the running stats on the scoreboard as well - I miss those when I go to games outside of Newark. And the video monitor is plenty big - too many of them are too small these days - if you're going to do it (which everyone should) do it right. And hey, there's even spots for 12 ads on that scoreboard - that helps to defray the cost right there!

There is no completion date set yet. The trustees have just begun the feasibility study. The plan will convert the current South/"visitor" side into the new home side.

With the new contruction, capacity is said to go from 15,000 to 20,000.
If you look at the pic of the endzone, you see that the bleachers there are taller than those of the "visitor" side. To me, it looks as though the bleachers in the rendering have been extended upwards, such that after completion, they will be at the same level. The new Press Box/Luxury Suites will be 6 stories tall, with floors 4-6 part of the stadium club/lux suites and the first 3 floors will be dedicated to some sort of "wellness center" that will incorporate various aspects of the Psychology, Nursing, Health and Fitness departments. This might sound like a strange combination, but since athletic facilities can not be funded by a university's state appropriation (in Alabama), this will lessen the amount of private funds (corporate sponsorships) that JSU must raise to fully fund the stadium expansion portion of the project (i.e. floors 4-6 and and the 5,000 new stadium seats).

JSU02 - That is a nice looking field. Is that Sprint Turf or Field Turf? I am not sure of the difference between the two. EWU is supposed to be installing Field Turf next spring in time for the 2006 season. We still have to expand and replace the visitor side blechers in the next couple of years. When it is all said and down Woodward Field should seat about 12,000. Now we just need another 6,000 to attend regularly to fill it up. Go Eagles!!!

I enjoyed my trip to EWU in 2004 and think the upgrades to your stadium and press box/donor suite look great. Field Turf would be a great addition seeing that EWU fights the elements late in the season.

The administration is saying that Cal Poly's stadium renovation is on schedule to be ready for the 2006 season. Cal Poly is suppose to be installing SprinTurf. I can not wait.

I also hope that Cal Poly and Eastern Washington can schedule future games. I think both programs are on the rise and we could form a nice rivalary.

If you look closely at the 2nd picture and then again at the third picture, you can see a slight difference in the murals painted on the stadium press box.

In the 3rd picture, you see that the colonel was replaced with a football image as the University....AGAINST the will of the majority of the students...decided to retire the colonel mascot image for politically correct nonsense.


All in all, the stadium is a GREAT place to watch a game. There is no track so you're very close to the action. So close, in fact, that when you sit at the bottom of the stadium, it feels like you're actually in the offensive line's huddle while the NSU defense is on the field. You can hear EVERY word said. I just wish we could get more fans out there.

-I've seen 21,000 in Armstrong. The second year they brought the Battle of the Real HU rivalry back on campus, and it was down in Armstrong. Also, this season,Howard's first game is at Armstrong, so I expect an even larger crowd... maybe 23,000- 25,000... if the fire marshall let us all in there.

First of all, it's just casual back and forth among fans and supporters at this point and I'm not aware of any concrete plans to expand anytime soon. But my guess is the track would be eliminated if we decided to enclose one of the endzones.

Just curious. I think if they were to enclose it it would be a bad decision to keep the track. I think stadiums like Strawberry and Guidry in Thibodaux have great character because of how close the fans can get to the action.

I heard that that the train in background was stopped for a long time due to some nimrod parking his truck too close to the tracks and getting some body work performed by Southern Pacific.

That rumor is a fact. Guy parked on the rocks right next to the track with a BBQ pit in the bed of his truck. Guy was running back to his truck to move it when the train came, spun the truck around and knocked the pit out of the bed grazing him and burning his arm.

Heard it from one of the UPD officers at the game...

The next week (NIU game) They had officers and tow trucks all along that track warning people to stay away from them.

Just curious. I think if they were to enclose it it would be a bad decision to keep the track. I think stadiums like Strawberry and Guidry in Thibodaux have great character because of how close the fans can get to the action.

Couldn't agree more. Even though we have a track surrounding the field, it's only five lanes and the first row of seats is literally a couple of feet from lane 5. Plus there's not much room between lane 1 and the beginning of the sideline. Additionally, the slope of the stadium allows for great sightlines and you feel like you're right on top of the action. I know Guidry is much the same way.

As far as keeping the track, I doubt it would have functional use should we enclose one endzone but there wouldn't be much reason to remove it other than for cosmetic purposes. But you really don't notice it all that much during football games due to the matt that's placed over it behind the benches.

There is a copper column for each member of the team that died in the crash. The stadium will be renamed Alex G. Spanos Stadium/Mustang Memorial Field. Spanos donated 8 million towards the 21.5 million cost of the first phase.

Stang Fever has the inside info. He says the second phase should start next fall. Let's hope so. Stang Fever also mentioned on the GWFC board that the coaches are moving into the old Crandle (sp?) Gym across the street from the stadium this summer and they are trying to make it a football complex with new home and away locker rooms, coaches offices and meeting rooms. Coach Ellerson is talking with John Madden about a donation to get it rolling they would name it the Madden Complex. That would be sweet.

It is the first phase of a four phase renovation project. If $21.5 million is cheap, I guess it is. There is already seating on the other side that will be replaced in another phase.

It will all depend on fund raising. The second phase will probably be seating in the south endzone and I think they are going to try and start as soon as possible (when the funds are raised). I think they are hoping to start in the fall.

Only ten I-AA schools averaged over 15,000 last year, and 33 over 10K. The average for I-AA was 7,600. UMass was 37th of 120. Are you saying that 80% of I-AA athletic departments are incompetent? Do you think nobody else has tried to copy the marketing that's so successful at UM and UD? Just because Montana and Delaware are the exception doesn't mean it's going to work everyplace else. More likely there ARE unique conditions at a small handful of places that don't exist anywhere else.

They would have made it larger, but as you can see it has a street and railroad tracks running behind it. The pressbox/sky boxes will span the street, but you can only get so close to the tracks. The seating on the opposite side will be replaced with more modern and larger seating in one of the other phases of the four phase renovation project. You are only seeing pictures of the first phase which is currently being constructed and is scheduled to be ready by the start of the 2006 season. When all is said and done the seating capicity will be between 17,000 and 20,000.

This is what started it UAlum72. It takes more than a nice stadium for a program to make. It's a start, then make people within 100 miles think it's the ONLY PLACE to be on a fall saturday.

But this isn't the first (or fifth) time somebody from Montana's said if you're not drawing 15K the athletic dept. isn't doing its job. Uh, about 200 miles and at least one mountain range "just down the road"... (Moscow isn't much closer.) Not that it matters, but this geography error is just too incredible to pass over. :rolleyes: Massachusetts is not a high profile profile school, Hampshire county is not a major population center, and its residents typically have many other interests to pursue on an autumn weekend besides football. Montana and New England are very different places.

Nicholls State has that problem. LSU is definitely top dog in this area. Nicholls has some devoted fans, but we're fairly close to LSU and most LSU fans begin tailgating on Thursday in Baton Rouge and return home on Sunday (some even start on Wednesday). Nicholls didn't add varsity level football until the 1970s after so many people in the are had already been raised as Tiger fans.

I'll agree with you that football stadiums should not be one sided giant grandstands a quarter mile away from the field due to a track. It seems to me like DI universities should be able to afford separate football and track facilities. I realize this isn't the always the case, but it'd be nice if there were more facilities like wa-griz and fewer like WKU and so many others in this thread

Could not agree with you more...One sided stadiums are terrible. I would rather have a balance two side stadium then a monster one sided stadium.

The homeside should and can be a little bigger but dont let it get out of control were the home side is sitting 12K and the away side is sitting like 3k
