The Deadline trades have started - the first trades involve Scott Kazmir to the Astros and Aramis Ramirez to the Pirates. Also, the Cardinals now have Scott Cishek, formerly the Marlins' closer.

Tigers lose in 11 innings to go 2 games under .500. The bright spot was Justin Verlander went 8 innings with only one run allowed.

With a week to go until the trade deadline I hope they either sell or stand pat. Sell if you can get some quality talent in return. Stay as is, and maybe get a Wild Card spot. Make qualifying offers on Price, Cespedes and Soria, so that even if they sign elsewhere you get some additional draft picks.

Cole Hamels throws a no hitter against the Chicago Cubs!! 13 strikeouts, 129 pitches, simply ridiculous performance....

He was "Carltonesque" today. Phillies CF Herrera put on an unnecessary acrobatic show. Misplayed two deep drives, but recovered in time to make lunging catches. What gets lost in some of this is Carlos Ruiz. He becomes only the fourth catcher in history to catch 4 no-hitters. (Jason Varitek the other, I believe). While I understand the lure of getting 3-5 hot prospects for Hamels, seeing him anchor the starting rotation the next three years with some nice young arms coming up is also interesting. One does need a leader on a staff, and without Cole, I don't know who that could be.

Braves deal Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson to the Mets for, you guessed it, more minor league pitching. Both players Atlanta gets are young RHPs. Pretty well signals surrender on Atlanta's run to a post season berth.

Good move I think. Mets get two established major league hitters, which they have virtually none of. Braves turn some bargain bin signings this offseason into some promising young arms.

Keith Law just ranked Atlanta as the 2nd best farm system in the game. That's a pretty incredible jump from its bottom five system at the end of last season. John Hart has routinely said that talented young pitching is a "currency" in major league baseball, and the Braves are stock piling it.

Not sure that is necessarily the case. I certainly have always advocated having veteran pitchers on the staff, but I'm becoming less convinced that is necessary.

Atlanta is a good example. The Braves have the 11th best ERA in the MLB (3.84). Outside of a couple of early appearances by Eric Stultz and Trevor Cahill, Atlanta has pretty much gone all season with five starters 24 years old and younger (Teheran, Wood, Miller, Banuelos, Perez, Foltynewicz, and Wisler). Four of those guys are rookies.

As in the case of the Braves, I think the "leader on a staff" can be the catcher. A veteran guy like AJ Pierzynski or Carlos Ruiz can be as valuable as a veteran pitcher for helping young guys learn the game.

You know my opinion on this. Phillies should have traded Cole Hamels a year ago. If you are not going to compete, and the Phillies aren't for a while, what good is having one really good starting pitcher in the rotation?

Yankees pound on the Twins to win the series and I'm going to log my 1st complaint against Molitor. It was obvious that Gibson did not have his stuff today, it was a stone cold miracle he went out for the 6th with only giving up a run. Why would you send him out there, it was obvious what was about to happen. I know the bullpen is terrible right now, but still.

Nice to see John Smoltz entry into the hall of fame. Saw virtually his entire 21 year career start to finish. One of my favorite players.

As a Braves fan, I'm not sure I appreciated at the time how special it was to watch five hall of famers on one team. Granted, I am assuming Chipper Jones will be in, though I imagine he will be first ballot.

Break up the Phillies! Winners of 8 of the first nine games since the All-Star break..and that one loss was 1-0. "Only" 24 games under .500. Domonic Brown starting to hit the ball, youngsters playing well. A "new core" may be in the works.

Wacko trade reports coming between Atlanta and LAD concerning Alex Wood and the Braves' top prospect Jose Peraza. Seemingly the return would be cuban infielder Hector Olivera.

Nothing confirmed. I have to imagine that if the Braves deal a young mid rotation starter and a top prospect, there has to be a more significant return than a 30 year old unproven international player.

David Price goes to Toronto for three left handed pitching prospects, including Toronto's #1 prospect (#17 or #18 MLB prospect before the season started). I was hoping for more, but with an expiring contract after this season, Price's trade value may have diminished somewhat. And Detroit really needs some arms in the system. If they get a reliable starter and bullpen member from the three, it may work for the best.

Still processing that one. Rarely do you see a trade with that many player involved, especially at the major league level. I think the Dodgers made something like 5 or 6 corresponding roster moves.

Andrelton Simmons is unbelievable. Probably the best defensive player in the game, great glove, cannon arm, unreal range. But it is plays like this that make him just incredible to watch. He is constantly "hunting for outs." I cannot tell you how many times I've seen him whip throws behind the runner or sneak in behind when they stray too far. Always waiting for a baserunner to make a mental lapse and take his mind off the game for just a moment. Really fun to watch.

Not sure I can peg that one on Dom Brown. You just have to be on your toes when Simmons is on the diamond. I talk a lot about him on here, but I'm not sure i've ever seen a player with a better grasp of defensive infield fundamentals. Fun guy to watch every day.

Because I am thinking about it, this was a similar type play from a few months ago nabbing Harper who rounded first base too far. http://m.mlb.com/video/v106615783/atlwsh-simmons-catches-harper-too-far-off-first/?player_id=592743

Tigers also deal Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh for a SS prospect. Again, maybe not the haul you would like, but Soria could be a two month rental for the Pirates.

Expecting Yoenes Cespedes to be moved today. I'd like to keep him around, but it may not be feasible. I'm wondering if Ian Kinsler might be shopped around as well. He makes a good bit of money, but I think there are a couple of years left on his contract.

It's a hard deal to really explain. The Braves clearly love Olivera. They scouted him heavily in Cuba. They tried hard to sign him, but couldn't compete with the deep pockets in Los Angeles.

From what I can gather, the Braves don't feel like Peraza is going to be ready for at least another year or so. He has low walk rates, and no power. Slap hitters with speed have a spot on a major league roster, but are not the type of players you build a team around. While he may turn out to be a good player, Peraza really didn't have a position in Atlanta.

Alex Wood is the head scratcher. Mid-rotation arm, left handed, young, and cost controlled. I assume they have a pretty good reason for dealing him.

Why are they blacking out so many games in Iowa?
Back when teams had to "claim home territory" for their broadcast rights Iowa was claimed by Kansas City, Milwaukee, Minnesota, St. Louis, Chicago AL and Chicago NL.

That means Iowa is blacked out of non-regional broadcasts for all 6 of those teams.

Well, Milwaukee, KC, Minnesota and St. Louis are all regionally broadcast to only the extreme of the the state boarders. Chicago teams lost a ton of coverage with WGN losing the rights to the state of Iowa. Very few games are broadcast now.

If you have MLB.tv on your computer or mobile devices, you know the joy of having multiple options available when choosing what games you want to watch on any given night. The service has completely changed the way many baseball fans across the country consume the sport on a daily basis.

Of course, you also know the frustration of sometimes not being able to actually watch the games you’d like to watch, depending on where you live, thanks to MLB.tv’s blackout restrictions. Some of them make very little sense, geographically speaking.

http://dy.snimg.com/story-image/0/0/234061/234061-650-366.jpg

We’ll get back to that in a moment.

A suit was filed last year against MLB, essentially arguing that baseball’s broadcast territories violate antitrust laws. This week, the league attempted to get a federal court in Manhattan to throw out the claims, a motion that is thoroughly examined in this excellent piece by FanGraphs’ Wendy Thurm—an expert on these matters.

It’s a fascinating read, well worth your time. Go ahead. We’ll wait. (Also worth checking out her January story on the lawsuit.)

OK, welcome back. Sorry that story didn’t offer better news for those of you (us) who are hoping for blackout-free MLB.tv one day soon.

After reading that FanGraphs update, though, I wanted to offer a reminder at what these blackout rules do to fans in certain cities across our baseball-loving nation. Blackout rules on MLB.tv are exceptionally harsh in states that don’t have their own baseball team (these aren’t new, of course, but worth another look).

For example, the tiny town of Ferryville, Wisconsin, is blacked out from only their home-state Milwaukee Brewers. Just eight miles away, though, north on 35 and west on 82 across the Mississippi River in Lansing, Iowa, residents are blacked out from six teams—the Brewers, the Twins, the Cardinals, the Royals, the White Sox and the Cubs. In fact, the entire state of Iowa is prevented from watching any of those six teams on MLB.tv.

Another example: The town of Plentywood, Montana, is 1,059 miles away from Safeco Field—that’s a 16-hour, 34-minute drive according to Google Maps—but residents there are blacked out of Mariners games on MLB.tv, because the entire state of Montana is considered in-market for the Mariners.

Seriously.

Here are six other cities in states without a baseball team, with a list of what teams they’re barred from watching on MLB.tv and the actual driving distance to those stadiums.

NOTE: To find what blackout restrictions apply for specific cities, you can enter zip codes here. And for more information from MLB.com, here is the site’s Blackout FAQ page.

Charlotte, N.C.
- Atlanta Braves. 246 miles from Turner Field
- Washington Nationals. 398 miles from Nationals Park
- Baltimore Orioles. 443 miles from Oriole Park at Camden Yards
- Cincinnati Reds. 479 miles from Great American Ball Park (that’s a 7-hour, 27-minute drive according to Google Maps, by the way)

Des Moines, Iowa
- Kansas City Royals. 195 miles from Kauffman Stadium
- Minnesota Twins. 244 miles from Target Field
- Chicago Cubs. 338 miles from Wrigley Field
- Chicago White Sox. 339 miles from U.S. Cellular Field
- St. Louis Cardinals. 349 miles from Busch Stadium
- Milwaukee Brewers. 369 miles from Miller Park

Las Vegas, Nevada
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. 272 miles from Angel Stadium
- Los Angeles Dodgers. 278 miles from Dodger Stadium
- Arizona Diamondbacks. 314 miles from Chase Field
- San Diego Padres. 338 miles from Petco Park
- Oakland Athletics. 560 miles from O.co Coliseum
- San Francisco Giants. 574 miles from AT&T Park

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- Kansas City Royals. 355 miles from Kauffman Stadium
- St. Louis Cardinals. 499 miles from Busch Stadium
- Texas Rangers. 209 miles from Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
- Houston Astros. 447 miles from Minute Maid Park

To prove physical driving distance isn’t part of the equation for blackout restrictions, here’s a look at the teams blacked out in Honolulu, Hawaii …
- San Diego Padres. Across an ocean from Petco Park
- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Across an ocean from Angel Stadium
- Los Angeles Dodgers. Across an ocean from Dodger Stadium
- Oakland Athletics. Across an ocean from O.co Coliseum
- San Francisco Giants. Across an ocean from AT&T Park
- Seattle Mariners. Across an ocean from Safeco Field

And, because some of these blackout rules make as much sense as UFO explanations, here’s the list of teams blacked out in Roswell, New Mexico …
- Texas Rangers. 475 miles from Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
- Colorado Rockies. 505 miles from Coors Field
- Arizona Diamondbacks. 570 miles from Chase Field
- Houston Astros. 666 miles from Minute Maid Park (a 10-hour, 11-minute drive according to Google Maps)

I've never gotten that argument. America has become too much of an instant gratification culture that they cannot appreciate games like baseball and soccer. They want 44-45 football games and lots of beer commercials.

Baseball certainly has its negatives. I think they've done a good thing by speeding the game up and limiting some of the idleness that can come with the game. They can do better attracting a younger audience and keeping kids interested.

Looks like Cespedes is going to the Mets for two pitching prospects. Apparently, the haul for Detroit the last couple of days is 5 pitchers and a middle infielder (all prospects), for 3 expiring contracts. While I'd love to see the three traded players back, this seems like the best move to make.

And Flores who was supposed to go to the Brewers as part of the Gomez trade hit a home run in the 12th inning to beat the Nats by 1. Nice story of a guy who wants to stay with his team - has been with the Mets organization since he was 16 and is now 23.

Cannot stand the Nationals. Bring back the Expos.

Seriously, this is their window. It is an exaggeration to say their entire roster is in a contract year, but its close to their entire roster. I think next year's Nationals will look significantly different.

It's a tough situation but it was social media and not the Mets who announced the trade publicly. Manger should not have put him in the game once he saw how Flores reacted but that is the only part I can really blame on the Mets.

Mets just tied the Nats for 1st place in the NL East after sweeping them, 2 1/2 back of the Wild Card. Hitting has improved and pitching remains strong. They have 3 starters with at least 15 starts who have lower than a 3.00 ERA (de Grom at 2.09, Syndergaard with 2.66, and Harvey at 2.91). Jonathan Niese has pitched the last 2 months at a 2.93 ERA. Only the old guy Bartolo Colon has not pitched strong and he brings the experience to the team where all other starters are 28 or younger. Duda has been smacking home runs like nobody else the past 8 games with 9 home runs in that time frame.

EOF was a waiver wire pickup from Atlanta in 2008. He was truly dismal with the Mariners, but really shined in Atlanta.

Spent his best years as the 7th inning man for the Braves. He would set up for Johnny Venters and Craig Kimbrel. Braves fans fondly refer to that trio as "O'Ventbrel," and was one of the most dominate late inning trios I have ever seen.

I can go into more about how I think overuse in 2011 cost Venters his career and overly taxed EOF. You don't care about that.

Long story short the guy has been a good lefty over his career. His career ERA is under 3.00. He's a ground ball guy that, while not a specialist, is good at getting LHB out. He had a good first season in Oakland and was forgettable this season (ERA up around 6). Mets are buying low on him in the hopes that he can recover some mojo. At his peak, he was arguably the best set up man in the game. Right now I think the Mets would settle for just decent relief innings against lefties. He's a low risk option that can be a really solid reliever.

That is pretty incredible when you think about it. Chipper Jones broke into the big leagues in 1993. His first ever visit to Kauffman Stadium was in 2012 at 40 years old in the All Star game.

When you put that into context, Hawkins not only has played every team, but recorded a save against every team. Jones played for 20 years and never even stepped foot in Kansas City for a baseball game.

I'm not worried about his age. Plenty of free agents sign big long term deals in their age 30 season. Yoenis Cespedes is going to be a highly sought after free agent, and he's a Cuban only about six months younger than Olivera.

So, this is pretty inexplicable.

Shelby Miller is 5-9 with a 2.48 ERA. That's good for top 10 in the MLB and only a tick behind Max Scherzer. Despite that, Miller is on a 15 game winless streak. During those 15 games, the Braves have scored 0 runs 8 times, 1 run 3 times, 2 runs 1 time, and 3 runs 3 times.

Sort of shows you how little you can glean from a pitcher's win-loss record. Some guys don't get a lot of run support, but this weird phenomena has been going on about half the season. Atlanta simply cannot score runs when Miller is on the bump.

5 years ago, Felix Hernandez had a 13-12 record with a 2.27 ERA and won the CY Young. His run support was 3.06 that year behind Ted Lilly who had a higher much higher ERA, Oswalt who had an ERA of 2.76 and run support of 3.03 (13-13 record) and Johan Santana who had an ERA of 2.98 and run support of 3.03 (11-9 record)

Miller's run support is 2.74 this year which is tied for the worst with Harang of Philly who has a 4.11 ERA. Lance Lynn of StL is also getting ripped off with a 2.76 ERA and only a 3.00 run support for a 9-6 record. Team has lost 10 straight when he has started. They are something like 19-27 in their last 46 games and 19-17 in games he has not pitched. They maybe should sit him for the rest of the year for the sake of the team's record.

I think ERA is still a good indicator. WHIP is still a good indicator. The ratios of strikeouts/9 as well as strikeouts/walks.

On the metrics side, I see a lot of FIP (fielding independent pitching), which sort of measures a pitcher independent of their defense.

ERA also has its problems, especially with relievers.

I cannot remember the year, but John Smoltz gave up 9 runs one inning as a closer for the Braves. I was actually at the game. Smoltz ERA stayed stubbornly up over 4.00 for much of the season, despite the fact he was an overwhelmingly good reliever.

Braves see in Olivera a legitimate middle of the order bat at a position of need for a below market price. Yes, it is a risk, but the Braves scouted the heck out of him. I think they know what they are getting.

Peraza is a big loss, but many in Atlanta didn't see him with a real future for the Braves. He's already been moved from shortstop to 2B because of Simmons. Many consider Ozzie Albies the better prospect, though he is further off. With Peterson a solid option at second base, Peraza really didn't have a position. They have tried him in the outfield, but he's not going to be better out there than, say, Mallex Smith. He doesn't walk much and has no power.

The difference is interesting, though. If you believe John Hart, Peraza probably wasn't ticketed for Atlanta until late next year. Los Angeles needed him now.

Big concern with the Mets is that the manager is going to limit the innings of the young starters (a bunch have recently had TJ surgery or are not used to a ton of innings). The 40 man September roster should help and he said they will be in for the playoffs but it will be interesting to see how he plays around with them over the final 1 1/2+ months of the season.

The thing the Mets have going for them is their schedule. While a lot of away games (where they have been horrible), in their final 47 games, 3 against Colorado, 10 against Philly, 3 against Boston, 6 against Miami, 4 against Cincinnati, and 7 against Atlanta. That is 33 against <.500 teams. The other 14 are against 6 against the Nats, 3 against the Yankees, 2 against Baltimore and 3 against Pitt with Pitt and Baltimore the next 5 games. If they do well their next 5 games, they will have nice control with only 9 of their final 38 games against teams >.500.

aren't there two wildcard spots in each league, with the two WC teams playing a "one game series" to see who makes it to the playoffs? Or is there a rule in place that prevents both WC spots going to teams from the same division? (which would be a very stupid rule and go against the whole notion of what wild card teams are supposed to be). Though I suppose getting to play that play-in game at home is a good advantage to have.

There are two wild-card spots in each league, but I'm not sure if the seeding rules for the _LDS would apply. (i.e. two teams cannot play each other in a DS if both are from the same division)

The Reds played at the Pirates in 2013's NL Wildcard game, so I do not assume there is a division v division rule.

Bad news: Shelby Miller throws a no-hitter into the 8th, still does not get a wine.

Good news: Peter Moylan pitched got two batters out. Moylan is still a popular player in Atlanta, but hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013. Long road back.

Great news: Cameron Maybin hammers a 10th inning blast to walk against the D'Backs.

I definitely may be wrong, but I think the winner would play at the Division winner with the best record other than STL. Assuming of course, that STL will end up with the best overall record. In that case, it would be the Division winner with the best record.

from wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_postseason#2012.E2.80.93pres ent:_Expanded_wild_card):

under the expanded wild card format the winner of the one-game wild card playoff faces the top-seeded divisional champion in the Division Series, regardless of whether the two teams are in the same division, while the second- and third-seeded divisional champions play each other in the other Division Series.

So if the season ended today, in the National League, the Cubs (3 game lead in the WC standings over the Giants) would play in a one-game playoff at Pittsburgh (who are currently 3 games better than Chicago), with the winner facing St. Louis (9 games better than the West-leading Dodgers and 12 games better than the East-leading Mets), with all three teams being from the Central division.

On the positive side, Alfredo Simon threw a complete game shutout last night, and the Tigers crept within 3 1/2 games of the second Wild Card spot. Probably too many teams in front of them to get it, but at least things are staying interesting.

Probably safer to say the late 80s. Atlanta had brought up Glavine in Smoltz in '87 and '88. In 1988 Smoltz had an ERA hovering around 6.00 while Glavine was up around 5.00.

At the time, no one knew Smoltz and Glavine would be hall of famers. Everyone sort of assumed 2015 was going to be a wash. I do think Atlanta, though, has the making of an extremely good rotation. Not there yet, but every game those guys go out they are getting better.

Has the player traded for ever been named as the player to be named later?

Mets are hoping so with respect to O'Flaherty. Given up 7 runs in 5 innings in 8 appearances. Luckily most of the rest of the pitching has been solid otherwise (outside the past 1-1 1/2 weeks when the offense has been on fire) and they have a 5 1/2 game lead over the Nats.

Edit: After today's game, 9 appearances, 10 runs in 5 2/3 innings. He is horrible.

random baseball question: why is it always the last pitcher who is awarded a "save" (in save situations).
just watched a game, where one reliever comes in with his team leading by 2 runs in the eighth inning, with no outs and the bases loaded (after the previous reliever had issued three straight walks), and he gets out of it without allowing a run to score. Yet the "closer" gets the "save" for pitching the 9th, even though the 8th inning guy's performance was much more impressive.

There is no question there are flaws with the "save" statistic, but the rule requires the pitcher to finish the game.

Your relief pitcher probably gets credited for the "hold." Holds are unofficial, but attempts to measure the effectiveness of middle relievers. You get a hold if you enter a game in a save situation, and hands over the lead to another pitcher without surrendering the lead.

There is a lot of debate on the utility of the save. A lot of managers are slavish to only using closers in "save situations." You can make a pretty good argument that with the bases loaded, nobody out, and a 2 run lead in the 8th, that would be the optimal time to use your best reliever, regardless of whether he is the closer or the situation warrants a save. The 8th inning is far more dangerous than a clean slate and 2 run or more lead in the 9th.

- Will any Wild Card contender collapse towards the middle or end of this month? (paying particular attention to the AL, it's still a volatile race)
- How many games behind the Cardinals will the Pirates and the Cubs finish in the NL Central race?
- Who will get the first pick in the Amateur draft next year? (Hint: NL team.)
- Who will be the first manager or GM to be let go at the end of the regular season?

Harvey may only be pitching 2 more games for the Mets to reach 180 innings (think he is close to 165 now) since this is his first year back from TJ surgery. If they make the playoffs, seems like he will pitch then. Next game he is pitching is tonight versus the Nats. Need to make it count if inning limit is true.

Since Georgia Southern left, I have sort of missed our resident Nationals apologist. Would have liked to hear his reasons for the National's tailspin. After watching the Braves blow an 8 game or so lead in September a few years ago, I can appreciate the position.

Also sort of shows you how little pre-season predictions mean. Nationals were picked by virtually everybody to win the world series. Now there is a pretty strong possibility they will not even see the post season.

I checked his numbers since the trade this morning, needless to say pretty incredible. Probably worth a few million a year for him for his next contract. Mets were down 3 to the Braves with 2 out and nobody on in the 9th. Double (which glanced off the Braves CF gloves), walk, HR ties it and they win 10-7 in 10 innings on an error and a couple of bases loaded walks. Hopefully, this year is more like '69 than '07 & '08

Mets magic number is 11 with 19 games to go (Nats have 20 games). Still one 3 game series left between the teams on the last series of the season.

When stuff like that happens, you know this is your year. Unlike 2007 and 2008.

I think Cespedes can be NL MVP IF the Mets win the division. I think the voting is based upon regular season performance. I do not think there is a rule regarding 'minimum' days played in a league to be eligible, correct?

I'm still pissed the Twins couldn't find something to throw together for him.

A line up with Cespedes and Sano would be...well...magical

The Cubs will make the playoffs no matter what? They were always going to be in the play in game. The only doubt was home field.

Yes, just a matter if they can catch the Pirates for home field advantage in the one game WC playoff.

And ouch.

I figured it might be a smaller market issue. He'll require a bunch of money now, likely more than he's worth, even at MLB levels of crazy . I kind of doubt the Mets will let him get away though.

Phils lost to Nats tonight in extra innings, 8-7, after trailing 6-2 in the 7th inning. BUT the great thing was seeing Papelbon appear in the bottom of the tenth inning and blow his first save of they year giving up a tying HR to Freddy Galvis! What few fans were left in the stands loved it.

The Mets are a scary team they built it right build on pitching in a big ballpark would not be surprised to see them in the World Series also they remind me of the 1991 Atlanta Braves a bit

I'm still sticking to this month old statement

Do you want to kiss the Pirates' hopes of going deep in the playoffs goodbye? Jung Ho Kang was hit in the leg by Chris Coghlan yesterday, and the former's season is over (out 6-8 months following his surgery.)

Meanwhile, the AL is still as volatile now heading into mid-to-late September.

just because they haven't ******ed a goat (or whatever the Cubs like to blame their "bad luck" on year after year) doesn't mean they can't have their own curse.

A Met win today over the Yanks combined with a Nats win over the Marlins makes the Mets magic number 8 with 15 to go for each team. Mets are 1 back of the Dodgers with LA having 17 to go including tonight's game against the Dodgers.

Yanks 4 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays but 5 games up over the Twins for the 2nd wild card spot (lead Astros by 3 1/2 for the 1st spot)

Meanwhlie, Mackanin was named the Phillies' manager for 2016, despite the fact that they are in line to get the #1 pick in June.

Mackanin has a better presence than Sandberg did both with the press and with the players. Seems like no-nonsense guy, but also quite direct and well spoken. I have questioned some of his decisions in the Braves series---why not bring in you star closer after the Phils tied the game in the 9th? He can go 2+ innings if necessary as he has hardly pitched.

For the first time in 58 days, the Braves won a game in a city not named Atlanta or Philadelphia. Hector Olivera showed a little bit of what we hope is great things to come. Game winning homer was pretty well spanked.

Atlanta showing a little more respectability here in the home stretch. Young pitchers starting to figure it out a bit. Julio Teheran looked good the other night. Just trying to avoid the dreaded 100 loss threshold.

Also won't have to face Verlander in the series coming up. He's been a bright spot in a tough season for Detroit. At least his last 9 or 10 starts have.

Listened to the game on the drive home last night. Freeman enters the game in the 7th and knocks in 5 runs. Not a bad night's work. Gives me some hope for the future.

In a weird quirk, Jeurys Familia has been nearly unhittable this season. Freddie Freeman, though, is hitting .500 against him (5 for 10, I think) with 2 home runs.
