Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard, who led the league in home runs (58) and RBIs (149), was named the NL's MVP on Monday, Leading the NL in those categories hasn't guaranteed the MVP award in recent years. Since Barry Bonds topped the circuit in homers and RBIs and won the award in 1993, four players have led the NL in those categories and not won the MVP. Can you name them?

I believe Andruw Jones was one last year.
Didn't Greg Vaughn lead the league in like 95 or something?
Bonds might be one.

The other three besides Andruw Jones are:
Mark McGuire '99 (Cardinals) - Won by Chipper Jones
Andres Galaragga '96 (Colorado) - Won by Ken Caminiti
Dante Bichette '95 (Colorado) - Won by Barry Larkin
Caminit might have deserved it. NO WAY Larkin should have gotten it. Still wondering about that one.

Their stats were discounted in the consideration some because of playing in Colorado.

I thought it was the years Jones and Caminiti won. Couldn't remember who led the league in those years. Greg Vaughn must have not won the RBI title the year he hit 50.

The strike-shortened season was '94, not '95.

94 and 95 were both strike shortened. The 2005 season started about a month late.

Ah, right, my bad. I keep forgetting that a little bit of '95 was lost, too.

In 1995 the Rockies' Dante Bichette led the league in homers and RBIs, but the Reds' Barry Larkin won the MVP award. Colorado's Andres Galarraga led the league in both categories the following year but lost out to the Padres' Ken Caminiti. In 1999 the Braves' Chipper Jones was named MVP even though the Cardinals' Mark McGwire led the NL in homers and RBIs, as did Atlanta's Andruw Jones in 2005, when Cardinal's slugger Albert Pujols won MVP honors.

Looked up Vaughn's 50 homer year. It was in '98. Oops to me.
