Clenz...that's a big line!

Those who have seen UCA's know Conque choose leverage with shorter guys over size. That works too. But Campbell is all for BIG uglies. Glad to see this. Some of our receivers and TE are VERY tall too. It's a big change from the D2 mindset of our former coach! xnodx We even have a 6'7" QB coming in. xlolxjust 6 years ago it was closer to 6'6 tahn 6'5 and closer to 310 than 295.

The offensive staff hit and identity crisis in 10. They decided to turn a power run play action based team to a spread zone team. The problem became they didn't know how to recruit that kind of OK, because it doesn't exist in Iowa. That's a problem when 80%of your roster is from Iowa. It means you pass up OL from Iowa for the spread OL from MO, IL and WI. That's also an issue when you, as an oc, don't understand the spread zone and it's techniques.

Imagine David Johnson running behind the OL UNI ran on to the field pre circa 04 through 09. Tackles at 6'7 305, guards at 6’5 315 and a center at 6'4 300. Oh ..and 5 or 6 of those guys ending up on NFL rosters, a couple of them still starting.

Us UNI fans can complain about the play calling, and it was attrocious, but the quality of OL play has gone WAY down and hasn't allowed a skill guy to really shin like they can the last 4 years.

An apt large name comparison is Michigan going from Carr to Rich Rod. Complete change in program scheme with the wrong OL in place and inability to recruit and teach younger recruits. Denard still put up crazy numbers, but that's because he was a freak weapon.....just like DJ behind the UNI OL

Actually, "Small (6-2, 280 AVG), but reasonably decent-looking" is more accurate for most in this Group...some of the young ones even have real purty hair...

OL at 6' and 5'11?

I played at a D3 with a bigger line average than that.

That's because it's a new program and you've just been getting start up kids in that would mostly be NAIA/D2 kids right or do you plan on using a OL at the D1 level that size?

UNI's defensive line is literally looking down at your guys

One of the first things Coach Conque said when he took the job at SFA, was that we need to get bigger and we need to get stronger.

Our line is bigger than most on this thread, yes, maybe not the tallest, but 6-2; 6-3; 300 plus pound warrior on the line can getter done, as we return three All-Conference OL men, and one of those a preseason All-American.

But don't worry we will be fielding a team.

Had D2 offers (NW Missouri State, Carroll out in Montana, etc...) and walk on offers from D1 schools but decided to play closer to my now wife.

Man, I'd love UNI to play Mercer.

NDSU fans....imagine Preston Woods, Mac O'Brien, Xavier Williams, Ben Boothby, Issac Ales or Ronell McNeal lining up against a line like that. Or any of your DL.

Ask SFA, McNeese, SHSU, Georgia Southern, etc...about what it's like playing UNI or NDSU with that kind of line

It's also terrible to compare a spartan warrior to an OL that is 3 inches shorter and 10 to 15 lbs below average.

A spartan warrior was the absolute epitome of size, strength, speed and physique.

The only thing small about the 300 was the qty of them. Size wise they were absolute monsters. In today's world the most comparable thing to them would be guys like Patrick Willis, Brock Lesnar, Ray Lewis, etc... compared to an average person

Pretty interesting the Valley/Southland head to head in the playoffs last year.

Both UNI and NDSU beat down the other teams with both of their lines.

It all starts in the trenches.

XW and Boothby were beasts. I sit right behind the visitors bench in the FD and shook Boothby's hand after the NDSU/UNI game. He was really good.

Nope. 3/4 technique DT and DE. Had great success on smaller lineman because they couldnt keep me from getting in on them and dictating the leverage and movement. The big guys? Hated that. Long enough to keep me off them, created a path to the QB that was twice as long as a shorter OL.

There's a reason the best teams don't average 6'2 and have 5"11 and 6' OL on their roster at the D1 level

I did play some TE in HS though

Nope. 3/4 technique DT and DE. Had great success on smaller lineman because they couldnt keep me from getting in on them and dictating the leverage and movement. The big guys? Hated that. Long enough to keep me off them, created a path to the QB that was twice as long as a shorter OL.

There's a reason the best teams don't average 6'2 and have 5"11 and 6' OL on their roster at the D1 level

Hey, you felt compelled to talk your shiite about the size of Mercer's O-Line; so I'm just playing along. Please though - do read this carefully, so you can distinguish the few parts when I am referring to anything about Mercer from the rest of the comments I make about OL size, play, etc.

You seem to believe that OL is all about size...or just height, really. Contrary to your belief/experience, mine is different (on both counts)...I want the best OLmen I can get and if they happen to be tall AND good, that's great. That's what I want for my (hypothetical) offense. Sounds like you might want the tallest OLmen you can get and if they happen to be good, that's great...for your (hypothetical) offense. OK. I always wonder, though, if they're 6-5 or over and aren't playing FBS, reckon why not?

Half of the OLmen invited to the NFL Combine in the past 2 years have been shorter than UNI's 2014 Average OL Starter's height (Just using UNI as an example because I just looked at the roster - in no way am I disparaging UNI's OL - I've never seen them play. I think that's a good policy to follow.) and about 95% of the OLmen invited have come from FBS...That kinda tells me something about all of these tall FCS OLmen I see. They might be perfect for their team's offense and really great players in that offense (as I'm sure all of UNI's OLmen are), but maybe those 6-3 & 6-4 guys going to the combine are just a bit better. So...they don't HAVE to be tall to be good or the folks in the NFL wouldn't be using 1/2 their OL Combine spots on 'short kids.' To summarize all that (for me), I don't give a rat's rear end about how tall my Center and OG's are, but I hear what you are saying about OT's. I'll take a risk on an athletic kid who projects at OT because he's got that frame. Gunnar Bromelow, an excellent OT for Samford is an example of that: 6-6 and MAYBE 225 coming out of HS. He's 300 now. Joel Bell, OT from FU was another: 6-7, about 240 out of HS, but grew up in Germany and was a Soccer player - only 1 year of HS Football. 6-7 340 I think when he went to the NFL/CFL. Both really good athletes that slipped thru the FBS 'strainers.'

Also, I'm going to do things in my (hypothetical) offense to take advantage of the assets my players have and minimize their liabilities. I may have to chip the DE with a RB on his way into a route to help my vertically-challenged OT, but I bet I can get an extra man at the point of attack because my quick-as-a-cat 6-1 OG can reach your guy in a 4 or 4i on outside zone, while a 6-6 OG would have to block back on the 1TEC/2i or, at best, get a lot of Combo help from the OT on the 4/4i, which keeps him from getting to the 2nd level in time to catch the LB scraping over the top, who makes the tackle for a 2 yard gain, instead of the 8 yard one we woulda had if my OG could move a bit quicker and get under that 4/4i's pads a little better to work his hips around and get him solo reached.

MERCER PART BEGINS HERE: So, you are right, Mercer's OL is shorter than many in FCS, probably as tall as some others as well. So, here's the 'tale of the tape' based on Mercer's projected 2015 OL Starters and UNI's 2014 Starters. AS YOUR COMMENTS HAVE FOCUSED ON SIZE, THAT IT THE ONLY COMPARISON I AM MAKING AS WELL. JUST SIZE - NOTHING ELSE! As I've said, I've never seen UNI Play. I hear they're pretty dang good though. Anyway...

So...what does this mean? To me, absolutely nothing. To you, it seems quite important that Mercer's OL average is 3" less than UNI. From just this measurement, I would say the players have fairly similar frames in that they are carrying the same 3.9-ish pounds across each inch of those frames, but that doesn't matter to me. Bottom line, I hope Mercer gives their OT's a little help on the edges and continues to use their inside guys, actually all of them, in a way that takes advantage of their quickness and ability to gain leverage. Last thing - you know Chatt's D from last year has 2 DLmen currently on NFL rosters and they have 2 other DLmen returning that were All-SoCon last year (I know that means nothing to you, but 1 of them is getting high praise for NFL Scouts)...so this ridiculously small Mercer OL did their thing as the Bears put up over 400 yards/31 points on that Mocs Defense. Looks like ISUb only put up about 170 yds/14 points on the Mocs...On the other hand, they did put up twice that many yards and another score against UNI. What does all that mean? I don't know; probably very little...I was just trying to play along and post the Mercer OL roster in this fun thread. END OF PART ABOUT MERCER

REAL quick looking as I start this shows Mercer gave up 18 sacks in 12 games...with games against Ave Maria, Stetson, Reinhardt, Warner and Austin Peay

UNI gave up 24 in 14 games...that's including 2 FBS games and 8 FCS games against teams who spent time in the top 25 (including 3 games against other top 10 FCS teams)

So....Not looking good for your Mercer horn tooting

Size is great as long as there's athleticism, flexibility and power (not necessarily raw strength) to go with it. Without it, it's pretty much negated and can actually be a liability against smaller, quicker D-linemen and OLBs. No doubt big time college football and the NFL continues to trend bigger and bigger (as does all of football for that matter), but they're also able to find enough big guys with skill. But there are plenty of FCS OL in the 6-3, 280 range who are very good football players and better than a lot of much larger guys. Obviously if you get much smaller than that, it can become a problem but often times, bigger isn't necessarily better. I'd still try to recruit the biggest, most athletic guys I could find, but I wouldn't pass on a great football player just because he's a little undersized. That's where the value is.

Based on your prior assertions regarding the paramount importance of OL height, given the 3" difference in their OL's average height, one would think that number would be astronomically higher in the other direction regardless of the competition faced. You said yourself that you played much taller OL's while you were playing d3 ball, so it would seem surprising that the MercerMidgets could stand up to the rush of any level of college team, wouldn't it?

Also, because I will never intentionally disparage an individual college football player in a public forum, I won't give the details...but if you broke down those sacks allowed by OLmen for Mercer last year, let's just say that you would find a markedly inverse relationship between the number of sacks allowed and the average height of the player allowing them. And that's what you have focused on - the height of Mercer's OL - and that's ALL that I have responded to.

If calculating/publishing that Mercer's likely 2015 starters will average 6-2, is over-tooting, then I am certainly guilty of that charge. I don't think of accurately quoting scores and statistics from prior games as 'horn-tooting,' but it seems to be viewed that way here. I mean those are just facts. I think of 'tooting' as shiite-talking about how good a team is going to be or, perhaps, how they dominated a game and 'killed' the other team. Maybe I'm wrong...perhaps Mercer Football and its fans should not even be allowed to publish any statistics at all, unless such statistics demonstrate complete ineptitude and deference to all other FCS Teams. Again...all of Mercer's stats are completely skewed by that absolute dog **** schedule they played last year.

Meanwhile UNI played, and beat, both teams in the national title game, a top 15 South Dakota State, a top 20 Indiana State team, a Western Illinois team that would have won the MEAC, OVC, PFL, PL and finished 2nd or third in the SoCon and SLC.

While there are quality lineman at 6'2 there are very few real high quality D1 lineman at 6'2 or shorter and no team will build a successful high quality line at 6'2 280 against FCS competition. I started by simply asking if that average is a result of those guys not being truely D1 recruits and were guys who would generally be D2/NAIA/D3 guys or if Mercer was going to genuinely try to build a high end FCS line at the size of most D2 or D3 teams.

Start running numbers for the good FCS teams. You'll see damn near every team with title dreams/aspirations team is going to be 6'4 or 6'5 and closer to 300 than 280

Is Mercer going to continue with that kind of line or once the program is more established are we going to see more 6'3+ guys on the roster at the OL spot? We can sit here and tout skewing stats vs D2 or NAIA teams all day long but when push comes to shove on the playoff field there clearly needs to be an improvement for Mercer

I think as Mercer progresses with their recruiting classes, they will recruit bigger guys in the trenches. Mercer would have a difficult time in the Valley with the guys they have now but as they progress in the FCS they quality of recruit will get better. I'm sure their coaches know to compete at a high level in the FCS, that they have to have very good lines on both sides of the ball.

Their schedule last year was a joke but you need to start somewhere. Comparing Mercer vs UNI or NDSU is ridiculous. Their schedule is nothing compared to the Valley.

BTW, good job clenz on all the stats/facts you dig up. You the man!

I'm sorry. I missed your simple questions amid all of the Shiite-spewing you wrapped around them.

The answer to your 1st question is "No." Of Mercer's projected OL starters, 2 (6-1 OG & 6-3 OT) signed with FBS Schools out of HS. One of those (6-1 OG) was All SoCon last year. 2 other projected starters: (6-2 OT) chose Mercer from 3 FBS and numerous FCS offers & (6-3 OG) also had 3 FBS and numerous FCS offers. The 5th projected starter (6-0 C) is the only one of the starters that, as far as I know, did not have any FBS or FCS offers out of HS. And, FWIW, he was named HM All-PFL as a FR. I know you consider that d3 ball & how bad you think all d3 players suck, but, since he was honored, I thought I would mention it.

So, bottom line, 4 of the 5 projected OL starters for the MercerMidgets played or had offers to play FBS Ball. I would have to say that qualifies them as D1 recruits, unless you have some other definition you want to conjure up. [EDITED - CRAP! - I just realized that the paragraph above may be viewed as over-horn-tooting. My apologies, if so. Tooting was not my intent.]

MY answer to your 2nd question is, "I sure hope so, but I don't Coach (at Mercer U), so I have no idea what they are going to do." Perhaps, they will sign the sons of Manute Bol & Chuck Nevitt to raise that HT average & draw your approval.

I think you also sort of asked something like, "Is Mercer planning to improve?" (If not, please forgive my lack of sifting skills). Anyway, I think the answer to any question about a start-up program's plans to get better can be best visualized by thinking about where Mercer's mascot does/does not practice his lavatory habits.
