With the FBS releasing their watch lists starting today I thought it might create some good discussion to do a FCS version of them. Today they released the Maxwell and Bednarik lists.
There are 80 players on each list so I have put 80 on these as well.

Who is missing? I did a little projecting by putting some names who maybe weren't standouts last year but played enough to show the flashes. I did not put transfers or anyone else who did not play last year. For example, there is a good corner from USF who sat out at YSU and I think he is good enough to be on this list but he did not play so he was not eligible.

I think you nailed the two obvious ones for us (CBs Harlan Miller/Denzel Thompson) though I think we have several more on defense who could emerge. Aaron Price (DT/DE) could have a breakout year. He put up pretty good numbers last year (8 TFL, 4.5 sacks) in a part time role in a 3-man front, and has knack for getting to the QB and making plays behind the LOS. Herbert Harris (LB) should put up big numbers playing full-time and Micah Eugene is poised for a big year at SS. Problem is we play so many guys on defense it's hard for any one guy to stand out statistically. What's crazy is our two primary backup corners are both SEC transfers (Derrick Raymond/Will Hines), including one with 15 starts at Arkansas under his belt ... and we have a fifth corner who is a promising sophomore (Ryan Sigers) ... they'll all play.

With only 80 total defensive players I had to leave some quality players off but the goal is to do what you said and get those who are definite types on the list. I think Miller and Thompson both have to be on it, despite the fact neither will have a shot unless they have 7-9 picks and with so much depth it will be hard for that to happen.

After seeing your Bednarik Listing and comparing it to the comments you made on FBGP's 2015 All American's I need some clarification regarding Casey DeAndrade. In the FBGP post you compare Casey to Southern Utah Strong Safety Miles Killebrew, but here you list Casey as a Cornerback. The issue is further clouded by the fact that UNH lists DeAndrade in the more generic term, Defensive Back. I've got a pretty solid recollection of seeing Casey DeAndrade in what appears to me as a Cornerback position and I have seen all but a couple of UNH games over the past three years, many in person.
UNH lines up for a disproportionate of their defensive downs in what amounts to a Nickel D with someone in the position of a fifth DB in lieu of a third LB. This seems to work reasonably well against a team with a mobile, dual threat QB.
Anyway, does the UNH style of defense have some impact on your confusion regarding Casey DeAndrade position, or are you just unfamiliar with where and how he plays?

I compared him because that other list had him as a safety. I think he is a top 5 CB but if you want to rank him as a safety I just would not put him ahead of Killebrew or Payne.

Since you asked, Chandler Curtis from Mercer, is missing from your "Maxwell" List. He didn't even start at WR last year (and actually played very little WR in the Bears 1st 3 or 4 games, I believe), but he had more yards receiving than 1 of the 3 WCU WR's you have on the list and almost (7 yards fewer) as many as another of those 3 Catamounts. He also had more receiving TD's than the 3rd one and as many TD's as the 1st one I mentioned, in addition to another TD rushing and 4 on returns (total of 10 TD's). He also had (by about 7 yds) a much higher yds/reception avg than all 3. I just looked at those WCU guys stats since I noticed you had included 3 WR's from WCU. I'm sure they all deserve to be on the list...as Chandler Curtis should be on any list of Top FCS Players. I suspect the stats for other WR's you have on the list may be similar to the guys from WCU, but I won't look any further....and Curtis was listed on many 2014 post-season and is on many 2015 pre-season lists as one of the top Return Specialists in FCS.

I think Underwood from Indiana State obviously deserves consideration, but if you look at their last 5 games last season, their safety Mark Sewall put up big numbers and big plays, including the OT interception and 2 FRs at Youngstown, the Int/TD in the playoff game against EKU, and 16 tackles and a sack against Chatty. He'll also pass 300 career tackles and likely 12-14 career interceptions.

Nice to see all of UM's starting LBs on there. They've done a great job replacing a group that sent two to the NFL.

Nate Tanguay, DT from NDSU, is a guy I'd keep an eye on for the Buchanan list. He's only a sophomore but he started every game last year and played very well for only being a redshirt freshmen DT.

I don't want to rank him as a safety, I agree with you, I think he should be considered a cornerback. I just wanted to clarify the question.
Is Payne the guy on your list from Stetson? Don't you think it is a huge leap of faith to declare a guy from a team with a clear quality of competition issue, and a clear lack of sucess even at that level to be one of the two best players at his position? Stetson plays, and loses most of their Pioneer League games and to Div. 2 and 3 teams on a regular basis. He may be an excellent football player, but there is no credible evidence to advocate that he is the best throughout FCS at his position. Since he's rarely, if ever, faced the best FCS offensive players, there really is no telling how he would perform.

Well, that makes sense because he sure should be on that list, but is it a 1-list/player thing then? Cuz his stats as a non-starting, only played about 2/3rds of the season True FR WR were as good as or better than others you DO have on the 'Maxwell' list. The Bears got him some Returns 'help' this year by signing Stephen Houzah & Jimmie Robinson - top returners and speedsters from GA & FL (which may actually hurt his RS numbers)....but I think you'll see him playing a lot more WR this year. Just put him on both lists, then you'll be safe. xthumbsupx

I almost did. I must admit I put less SoCon players than I have in the past. I felt the last two years the league was down a little bit. I think it will improve this year and really be good in 2016. 2016 will be interesting because I could see someone beating UTC with 3-5 teams who could win the league. This year I don't see anyone beating UTC and thus making it an expected one horse race with everyone else competing for 2nd place. I think Mercer will be one of the 3-5 teams who could challenge for the SoCon title in 2016.

All well & good, but I'm still not following your logic. You DID put 3 WR's from the SoCon on your 'Maxwell' list and all 3 happened to be from WCU. As the real Maxwell Award goes to the 'best college football player,' I would think it's incumbent to consider all-around contribution to to the team. So...I took the Top 9 returning WR's in the SoCon and ranked them relative to one another in Recv, Rushing, PR's, and KR's, in all of the categories listed by the SoCon in those areas (Yds/Game, TD's, etc.). I assigned a 9 to the Top Performer in each category, 8 to the next and so on. If a player did not have a PR, for example, they 'earned' the next highest ranking, so a 7, for example if only 2 of these Top 9 WR's had a PR. I made no calculation for magnitude of difference (for example, Chandler Curtis' PR Avg of 24.6 was worth 9 and Andrej Suttles PR Avg of 4.2 was worth 8, despite the huge difference). So, here is my tally of those 9 returning WR's using that criteria:

I just don't get how you could look at these players' contributions to their teams in 2014 and come up with the 3 you did from the SoCon when it seems pretty clear that Curtis, Hamilton, Sanders, and Snellings all did more for their teams. I can see putting T. Robinson from WCU in there ahead of one of those, perhaps, but S. Robinson and Benson ranked in the bottom half of the 9 top Returning WR's in both 'slices;' the Recvg-only & All-Around. So, the argument could be made that they 'had to share' touches among all 3 of them. FU and Mercer both had 2 in the Top 9 AND Mercer ran the ball 13% more often than WCU, so that argument has some credibility, but it is not as weighty as it might appear.
BTW - Don't get me wrong, I agree that S. Robinson and Benson are really, really good players. Look what I had to watch them do to the Bears last year:

Now, if you say, "I have those 3 evaluated higher than any of the others on my 'board' as NFL prospects," OK. But that's not really what these types of awards/watch lists are/should be based on, is it?
If you say the SoCon is down, so you can only include 3 WR's on the list, I'm just not sure that you landed on the right 3.
You said you "thought it might create some good discussion" in your original posting of your list. I'm not sure my questioning of your selections qualifies as 'good,' but it is, at least, discussion. xnodx

I have to make hard choices. I would typically say only scream for your player if you feel there is no way he isn't top 20 at his position and there are 30-40 listed. Not a player who is borderline but is clearly getting snubbed. I don't mind people hyping their teams. Most of the people who push for their players mainly just want the mention. I don't think anyone on here thinks I am unfair to schools on purpose. My goal is to be subjective and put those players who deserve it.
Remember ChattownMocs drilling me for hyping Demetrius McCray years ago and he was pushing their QB. The QB has been fringe and has been cut before while McCray is starting and considered a potential Pro Bowl candidate.
I could name countless others. I'm just trying to give an accurate listing mentioned on here and hope you and others feel I am accomplishing that. If anyone else wants to put out a list, they are welcome to as well!

RECEIVING
NO
YDS
AVG
LG
TD
S. Robinson
7
108
15.4
42
3
K. Benson
3
63
21.0
39
1
Now, if you say, "I have those 3 evaluated higher than any of the others on my 'board' as NFL prospects," OK. But that's not really what these types of awards/watch lists are/should be based on, is it?
If you say the SoCon is down, so you can only include 3 WR's on the list, I'm just not sure that you landed on the right 3.
You said you "thought it might create some good discussion" in your original posting of your list. I'm not sure my questioning of your selections qualifies as 'good,' but it is, at least, discussion. xnodx
It's not all about stats. I evaluate the player as a blocker, his body type, size, hands, route running, quickness, agility, and everything else that you look for in a receiver. Benson may not have the best stats and honestly to me I don't like his NFL potential because of some things away from the field but he is a good player. I take into account who can provide tough matchups and much more.
Maybe Curtis is producing more because he is the only good WR on his team while WCU has 3 talented ones and can't get each of them the touches they warrant? I value Curtis as one of the top 5 all-purpose players in the country when you add in special teams but I just feel those 3 from WCU are more likely to win a FCS Maxwell Award since their team is considered better and those 3 are more talented. I almost put Curtis on this list. When I do a Biletnikoff list he will be in there for sure. He is a top 30-35 WR by far. He was one of the last 3 WRs I dropped. You have to make tough decisions. Evaluate all of these guys 3-6 games and then decide who you would drop from the list. I promise no matter who you drop someone is going to put up a comparison and push for their guy.
You will like my Biletnikoff and all-purpose lists for sure!

And the correct answer was, and always be, DJ
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I always said DJ over Zenner. It was not close. He's bigger, faster, stronger, and has more upside. His only knock is that he runs up high but he has great receiving skills. DJ may not play 10 years because of his running style but he will flash some really good things in whatever time he does play. He's very talented and there is a reason NFL teams took him that much higher.

The Cards really seem to like him. He's on s lot of their social media promos and camp videos. I think they are finding out as good as he is on the field he is twice that off.
With his skill set I could easily see him in a more TE/split out roll, much like Chris Cooley with the Skins about a decade ago, as time goes on and his route running, coverage reading, and blocking improves. He's just so explosive with the ball in his hands you can't take him from the backfield yet. I saw many knocking his speed pre draft and felt like they never watched him run, even after hid 4.5 at the combine

The people who actually make decisions were not knocking his speed. That's all that matters ,which is the great thing for him and the legit players. If the decision makers take notice then it doesn't matter what everyone on Twitter and these mom and pop draft websites say!

A couple notes on tight ends. Odom of Fordham is a real sleeper. He didn't even start last year. Former basketball player with a lot of upside. I have him in my top 25 tight ends already and believe he could be a preseason top 5-10 tight end next year.
I have Payne and Cook as my top two tight ends overall.

The OP posted the list to generate discussion and get some feedback. There's nothing wrong with pointing out a guy or two on the team you follow who you think deserves to have an eye kept on him. It would be a pretty GD boring thread if everyone didn't comment or just said "looks good" because they don't want to look like a homer.
That said there are ways to be quite dickish about "giving feedback" to lists like these and some posters are very good at that.

I'm good with feed back - I'm working on a post for this very thing on this thread.
What happens is people get offended their entire team isn't listed and get douchey about it
OR
They read the list and see one or two players from their team and think "Well, if that guy is there this guy should be too" which then leads into adding 5 or 6 more people from that team that "need" to be on this list.
Posts like lionsrking02, who is a damn fine poster, are a perfect exampe of the second one. He lists two guys he feels were missed and then there 2 are listed because they "could have a breakout year" because he was only part time last season and *should* be full time players this year. He then lists another guy but doesn't even mention if he was a PT player last year or if it's all guessing. Also mentioned is the fact there are 2 SEC transfers on the roster and names 5 corner backs. If you have 5 CBs good enough for this list you shouldn't lose a game and never give up more than 150 passing yards - especially when one of the "missed part time players" has a great knack for getting to the QB out of a 3 man front.
fubear - a guy I mostly ignore because his posts are almost exclusively Mercer is going to dominate toned (though pretty mild at that) stated...and I quote..."Chandler Curtis from Mercer, is missing from your "Maxwell" List. He didn't even start at WR last year (and actually played very little WR in the Bears 1st 3 or 4 games, I believe)" and then went on to say " I suspect the stats for other WR's you have on the list may be similar to the guys from WCU, but I won't look any further....and Curtis was listed on many 2014 post-season and is on many 2015 pre-season lists as one of the top Return Specialists in FCS"
The issues there...
1. he admits he isn't going to look any further into comparing stats, which means he's going off raw stats. Can't do that on these lists. Different offensive styles lead to different numbers - especially for WRs but the WR with "lesser stats" may actually be more impressive.
2. He admits the guy didn't start and didn't really play in the first 1/3rd of the season so he's had very few snaps to prove himself
3. This isn't a return specialist list, as far as I'm aware. We'll have to see if that list is put out and who is one it.
4. Mercer played 3 non D1s and 2 of the worst FCS programs in the nation (Stetson and Austin Peay). Pretty easy to skew stats on those games.
I'm all for opinions and discussions, but when there's that many logic flaws in a post without having to actually research your post it's clear it becomes homerism and feel "my 11th best defender is still top 20 in the nation!"
I used to be one of those kinds of guys. I still want to be at times, but the reality is passion for your team really clouds your judgment if you take a couple days to think about it objectively it's amazing how many less players from your team are award winners than you think initially

A watch list is lazy. It is a way to put a very general prediction out there and when one of the twelve QBs becomes an All-American you can boast that your were right. Have some cajones and pick one at each position.

I would love to see someone that follows nationally put together an actual 2 deep team
2 QB
2/3 RB
1 FB
2/3 TE
6 WR
2 LT
2 LG
2 C
2 RG
2 RT
4 DE (2 for each side
4 DT
6 LB
4 CB
2 FS
2 SS
1 P
1 K
2 KR
To make it even better, you have to pick an offensive style - power/ground and pound, spread "power" run, spread option, west coast, no huddle, etc... and Tampa 2, cover 3, man, blitz happy, etc... AND pick players for that system. I.E. While he could you wouldn't have Brock Jensen pegged for a spread read option fast pace team. You also wouldn't have a guy like Brion Carnes run a power offense (or any offense if you were smart...ha...still hurts).
A guy like Zach Zenner isn't really effective in a EWU offense, but a guy like David Johnson would KILL in that offense. ZZ was perfect for the SDSU system.
I would respect the **** out of that.

You need a lesson in reading comprehension. I never mentioned anything about anyone on our team being "missed" or that someone else SHOULD be on the list. In response to the OP's question, I listed a couple of guys on our team who could elevate with a break out year based on their play in 2014, and mentioned why it's hard for any one player to put up gaudy enough numbers to win awards, due to depth and the fact we play a lot of guys. You jest, but we may very well only allow 150 yards passing per game ... we only allowed 178 last year, led the nation in pass efficiency defense, and tied for 2nd in INTs, not to mention under 50% completion pct. allowed. If there's a better secondary in FCS, I'd love to see it.

Your assessment of Goldrich is a bit extreme. I think he is a solid FCS QB, accomplished and capable but not All American caliber. He's has had many excellent performances in CAA games and one excellent Playoff performance vs SELU in 2013. Last season he came back from an MCL sprain about as quick as is possible and may not had been at 100% for mobility. He was throwing the ball up for grabs too much during the Spring Game and didn't seem to be taking real seriously.
Like you, I don't think that he has the ability to carry UNH to another seeded playoff appearance unless other offensive players can really develop quickly into big play guys.

He was basically saying that based on what I was asking you didn't need to go into detail about the rest of the players and how great the unit is overall because I didn't ask for a preview or analysis of a position group on your team. I simply asked if there was anyone missing and instead of saying no or not saying anything you had a long paragraph about your entire secondary.
I think his point was just that I asked if anyone thought I had missed someone. You said I hit the 2 players that you would expect, which he is arguing that based on what I asked meant you would not need to reply. You would only need to reply with anything more than "You got our guys dead on in my opinion" and instead mentioned how good the unit was and brought up 3-4 other names.

Yes, I brought up other guys I thought could emerge, which is the same criteria you used as evidenced by the following sentence from your third post in the thread:
"I did a little projecting by putting some names who maybe weren't standouts last year but played enough to show the flashes."
Considering we have one of the best defenses in the country, I do think it's proper to offer up guys who have potential to emerge and have breakout seasons from that unit. Sorry I offended anyone for my "douchy" reply and suggestions. ;)

Playing against teams like SFA - whom is the best representation of what the SLC had to offer that I saw in person....or McNeese the year before....it's not hard to have great defensive stats.
If UNI's new website had it's stats archived working I'd have a better retort to this post...

Eric Thoni, who is returning to FU's OL after being 'on hiatus' in 2014, is one who MIGHT deserve some consideration. He was All-SoCon Freshman and College Sports Journal Freshman All-American in 2012. I don't know if he rec'd any accolades in 2013; apparently not. Maybe Dozier's shadow was too broad for him to stand out that year...or maybe he 'fell off' that year (before he missed a year) Anyway, thought I'd bring him up since you may not have been aware that he's back in action and he has been an All-Something in the past.
Also - kinda hate to say it (because they are kids (more or less) and they are amateurs)....and I definitely won't say which one, but there's (at least) one on your list who, despite having received a bit of recognition, IMHO, just can't play. Effort is very good, but he really just doesn't get his man blocked very often...which is kind of important for that position. It's actually the ONLY thing I consider when I'm evaluating the performance of OLmen. But...I get it.

I can understand what you meant. I'm just telling you what he meant.
In terms of projecting I only did that with a couple of guys who were backups that played a lot of minutes and are going to start this year. I probably should have said that. I only put players projected to start. For example so far the Fordham TE and NDSU LB but only because the Fordham TE has a basketball background and great size while that LB played a lot and was very good.
When I do a Thorpe list for FCS I will say that there probably should be 3-4 players from your team on it. You do have the best secondary in FCS.

I almost put Thoni but he needs to get on the field first. I had said before I won't list players who didn't play last year.
As for the player who can't play I used names who had been nominated by sources around the country and those who I had seen. I'm sure there are a couple who just aren't that good. If I update this list during the fall I'm sure I would remove 5-8 names and add another 10.

Youre probably right. He has had a few good games. However, he is by far the worst UNH QB over the last 10 years (Maybe Toman?), and is most likely a product of a great offensive scheme surrounded by great offensive talent. He also is not even top 20 in FCS.

You listed QB: Zach Conque and P: Nick Bruno for the Jacks.
Zach has been in Arizona working with former NFL QB coach Terry Shea.
Coach Shea had stops with the Rams, Dolphins, Chiefs, and Bears. He started the Terry Shea's Quarterback Institute in Phoenix Arizona and has helped in the development of past college QB's such as Robert Griffin III, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Freeman, Sam Bradford, and Matthew Stanford.
Zach has the stature of a prototypical NFL QB standing at 6-6; 237 and could get a good shot at football after college if he develops his game, which he's currently working on at EXOS.
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CGSToVjWQAAv2eX.jpg:large
Punter Nick Bruno was on the 2014 CFPA Punter Watch List after coming off an All-SLC performance his sophomore year. During that sophomore season Nick averaged 40.4 yards per punt (62 punts) He had 12 punts go over 50 yards with 23 downed inside the 20. Nick had a season-long punt of 68 yards at Texas Tech, which is the 10th best in program history. During his 2014 campaign he averaged 39.2 yards a punt (64 punts) with 8 going over 50 plus yards including a season-long 62 yards against Northwestern State, while sending 18 punts inside the 20. Was named SLC Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 46.2 yards per punt.
A player I would not be surprise to see emerge on some DE Watch Lists would be starting Junior DE: Kedrick Harrison 6-2; 246 for the Jacks.

I know his size is a huge drawback, but Southern's Willie Quinn should hopefully make some watchlists.

Playing against teams like SFA - whom is the best representation of what the SLC had to offer that I saw in person....or McNeese the year before....it's not hard to have great defensive stats.
If UNI's new website had it's stats archived working I'd have a better retort to this post...
xlolx
UNI's defensive numbers from it's last two SLC games
Top 10 McNeese State team - 41-6 UNI Win
MSU rushing stats
32 carries
109 yards
3.4 ypc
MSU passing stats
17-31
171 yards
5.5 YPA
Playoff game vs SFA - 44-10 UNI win
SFA rushing stats
33 carries
90 yards
2.7 ypc
SFA passing stats
22-39
133 yards
3.4 ypa
6.0 ypc
1 INT
Total vs the SLC
Running
55 carries
199 yards
3.6 ypc
Passing
41-70
304 yards
4.3 ypa
7.4 ypc
Man I would love the play the SLC more...lol

I know his size is a huge drawback, but Southern's Willie Quinn should hopefully make some watchlists.
He has to be on the WR and RS list. You can't keep a player off these lists for size alone. While size goes into an evaluation for these lists its the last negative and the one negative that really won't keep a player off these type lists.

Kinda broke your own rule here, didn't you?
Other than that, I wouldn't argue with you (too vehemently) over the SoCon OLmen you've included on the list - Big Fan of Turner & Bromelow and Levin certainly has pulled in the accolades. The qualitative difference (which, to me, means only 1 thing - do they get their guy blocked or not?) between the rest of the SoCon OLmen you've selected and 4 or 5 other SoCon OLmen not on the list, all of whom I've watched very closely, is the width of a credit card in either direction. There are 2 or 3 stand-outs and then about 8 'pick-em's.' Just depends on who's doing the pickin' - So, I won't argue...
Oops - had to add - Also a Big Fan of Jeter, the DT from El Cid on the list...great motor, does not stay blocked, never quits on a play, and plays CLEAN. Yeah, he drew an Unsportsmanlike call that almost cost the Bellhops the game against Mercer last year...and it was a call the ref just had to make in today's overly PC world. But he was just excited and let his passion show...wasn't taunting at all....just too dang happy about making a big play. Hated it for him. Heckuva player and I bet he's a heckuva young man as well...despite his foolish decision to become a Bellhop.

When I say did not play in 2014 I'm talking transfers who sat out or are coming from another division. I'm talking about players who were freshmen last year and redshirted. If someone who was pretty good before injury is coming off an injury and plays on a real good team, I'll make that exception. Herren was a preseason All-SoCon pick before his injury and UTC is a highly ranked team.
I almost included Wilson Heres of Mercer and Bradley Way of Wofford.

Thoni from FU would fit that criteria then, but no worries; your lists, your 'rules' AND I'm enjoying the heck out of seeing them & kabitizing about them! And Herren is another that I wouldn't argue about being on the list.
Wilson Heres from Mercer & Way were 2 of those 4 or 5 SoCon OLmen I mentioned. Wineberg from WCU is another. Heres is one of those that excels in my all-important 'just gets his man blocked almost every play' category, if in no other category. I do have to admit possible bias for he & Joe Turner though since I had the pleasure of Coaching both of them from the time they were 'wee pups' thru HS. But when I watch vids, I really do just look at them as #67 for Mercer & #52 for Furman.
BTW - I guess you saw Chandler Curtis from Mercer was 2nd Team A-A on the STATS Teams. I didn't see any of those 3 other SoCon WR's you named to your 'Maxwell' List on there. xnodx

Thoni could have been on it but I admit I gave Herren a bone because he was preseason All-SoCon last year and his team was champs while Thoni was not. At least I didn't mark him on that list. If he was I may edit and add him but I was pretty sure he was not.
Curtis made the special teams and I said he would be on a special teams list. The WCU WRs weren't on there because I'm sure they figure it will be harder to make it with so many good ones. Curtis is your only good WR while WCU is stacked with talent at the position. If Curtis was at WCU you could argue he blends in and is their third or fourth receiving option.

Correct on Thoni - He was not Pre-Season honored in 2014, possibly, because he was already 'on hiatus' and wasn't eligible when Pre-Season teams were announced. Also, as I said, I don't think he rec'd any post-season accolades in 2013...not pushing for him - just calling him to your attention.
Curtis was named to the STAT OFFENSE 2nd Team A-A Team as an All-Purpose Player. The Maxwell award is an All-Purpose Award - "Best College Player" - not position-specific - Didn't Desmond Howard win it in '91 when he was playing WR, RS, and DB? Last time I will xbangx, but Curtis should be on your Maxwell list...as should Karel Hamilton, WR, from Samford.
Disagree both on your assessment of Mercer's WR corps (that Curtis is the only good one) and where Curtis would 'fit in' with WCU's corps.

Didn't think so on Thoni. That's why I left him off.
I almost put Hamilton. Maxwell Award is suppose to go to the best player overall. You gave one example. Curtis is nowhere near Howard so I would not compare them. I get your point but I'm just saying the one example you bring up is the best player in college football and Curtis is nowhere near the best in FCS right now. If he was a 1st team All-SoCon WR and RS then I think you can definitely argue to put him on. I had him on the WR list and will put him on special teams list. I had to cut down and omit some worthy players for the Maxwell because I had so many players.
Curtis is your best WR this year and the only one I would project be make the preseason team. Palmer is solid but neither are as good as the top 2 or 3 at WCU as a pure WR. Curtis is young though and I think in a year from now we will be talking about him as a 1st team All-SoCon WR but this stuff is based on how players did last year with a little projection. If I was doing a preseason SoCon list of WRs I would put Hamilton and Robinson on the 1st team with Benson, Board, and Snellings as 2nd team candidates. Curtis would only be about the 6th or 6th WR in a preseason list because the league has so many returning. There are a lot of good WRs in the SoCon and this just so happens to be a deep year so a couple of worthy players got left off.

Here is the Butkus list. You will notice that two players on this list did not play last year but they were award winners in 2013 so I included them because even in somewhat of a down year you would expect the Mercer and Fordham players who didn't play to at least be 2nd team all-conference, worst case.

I went ahead and did a projected preseason coaches All-Southern Conference list. What do you Mercer, Furman, Samford, Chatty, and other SoCon posters on here think? I basically took anyone returning from the postseason squad last year and kept them. Then I bumped up 2nd teamers to 1st team and the open spots I had were filled by the best players I have seen in 2013 and 2014. The position with the league quality of depth was punter and the deepest positions were OL, WR, and DB.

I will surprise you here - I really have no argument with this list. Maybe a tweak here and there. Might be a bit Cat-heavy, IMHO. I assume if you had a 3rd team, Curtis might be on that @ WR, which, given his limited play @ WR last year, is understandable. Glad to see you moved Hamilton up.
Here's the real surprise from me - I'm not sure it's right to include Taguebor until he plays against some SoCon competition and see how he returns from injury. Don't get me wrong, I think there's a good chance of him being there in the post-season honors, but I'm not sure it's 'fair' to include him there just yet. Love him though - great kid - great frame and he's added about 30 lb's of muscle since 2013. Might be on your NFL lists soon, if not already.

I think an argument could be made for QB Al Cobb, So., VMI on Second Team. I'm not sure anyone in the SoCon did as much for his team in 2014 than Cobb and he had very little support (as evidenced above). I watched the UTC-WCU game and based on that, I could not put Mitchell over Cobb. If this is all about team Ws and Ls, then maybe, but if it is about individual accomplishment, I'd have to go with Cobb over Mitchell.
Also, I think that LB Cory Magwood, Sr., Furman would get some serious votes as Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

It's all I asked of NDSU fans from the very start - is it not BF02?
You don't get to talk **** about beating D2 and NAIA teams and racking up stats against that kind of competition
or
going 3-8 in your first year in the MVFC

Note that I was projecting what I think the coaches will do. Your LB was the only player I put that I wasn't sure if the coaches would put him solely because I think he is good and should be on the 2nd team, plus there wasn't really a stud LB to put in that last spot.
WCU has talent and they will be improved. For example, that DT I put on the 2nd team who was not on the postseason list last year has a lot of upside and could potentially be like the Samford DT who went from an unknown to an All-American and 7th round pick. Read up on Helva. He has an interesting background.

Coaches took Mitchell in the postseason so I went with him this time. I do think Cobb is more important to his team but his team will not be as good and he probably won't quite have the stats if WCU does what most think they will. That's why Mitchell is going to get the nod.
I will say that I think Mercer is going to have the rise in 2016 that most of us are projecting WCU to have this year. WCU will lose a lot of quality seniors and I think the 2016 SoCon title will be between UTC, WCU, and Mercer with Mercer having a very good shot. You guys are just a year away at this point but if I'm wrong on that and you do win the league or finish 2nd this year, then you should probably be a preseason top 10 team next year and projected to run the table in 2016.
I almost went Magwood. It would not shock me if he is the pick. It's either Magwood, Cooper, or one of the UTC DBs.

Coaches took Mitchell in the postseason so I went with him this time. I do think Cobb is more important to his team but his team will not be as good and he probably won't quite have the stats if WCU does what most think they will. That's why Mitchell is going to get the nod.

Your probably right about how the coaches will vote, but I still think what Cobb did was impressive. If VMI can bring him some support, they could surprise some people this year. He just can't do it by himself.
Mercer "should" be better this year than last and "should" be better in 2016. However, so should most of the SoCon. UTC, WCU and Samford all should be better this year as well and have to be considered the 2015 favorites. I think Furman will be much better this year than projected and could compete for the championship as well if they have as much good luck this year as they had bad luck last year. Wofford could put a run together as well. Overall, I think we could see a much improved SoCon in 2015.

Whoa...Big Fella...Despite others misreading or mostly ignoring (or whatever causes them to completely mischaracterize/misunderstand) my posts. I think you are getting way, way, way ahead of the curve on this. The Bears need to win more than 1 SoCon game before anyone starts with that kind of crazy-talk! Some truly outstanding individual players, yes...and building the program the right way, yes...and competitive beyond almost anyone's expectations the last 2 years, yes....BUT still 1-6 in the SoCon and predicted by most to be 1-6 again this year.

The league certainly should be better as a whole. The only team who I could see being equal or worse is VMI and that's only because they have a new coach and if they change a lot there could be a year of transition. They at least have their QB.

You guys are funny. You hype about 10-15 players on your team as guys who should be on these lists but then you say you have a long way to go. LOL. We can have a list without a Mercer player and just because Curtis is left off a list doesn't mean the list is a joke, unless it's a special teams list. LOL.
Seriously, I see Mercer as a fast riser. Lamb is a good coach. You guys will only get better the next two years and that's why I'm saying this. I would project you to be 5th or 6th in the league this year but I think you will be a 2nd-4th type team in 2016.
I'm just teasing you guys but the instant response asking why a guy is left off all the time or hyping everyone is why others are teasing you guys. It does not bother me. You should hype your school. I do think it would be good to see those of you who say a guy is left off to do a list and see how it goes! If I put a guy I missed then someone else is going to say I missed a player and so on. Nobody is ever going to be 100% happy all the time.

I think you have misread FUbEAR's posts. He is has only mentioned ONE Mercer player that he thinks was left off your lists (granted he was tenacious on that one). All the other players recommended were from other schools. He even recommended taking one Mercer player off your SoCon list.

Teasing? No worries at all - Did you see the fun "Reinhardt is better than the NE Patriots" posts last year. Those were great!
Talking Shiite? - Fun - Love it, let's go!
Debating? - Wonderful! What else do we have to do in July? (besides our boring jobs)
Being a complete equine rectum? - no time for that - ignore...completely

Oh I know he only mentioned Curtis really and he hasn't been pushing too many but I have seen other Mercer posts pushing for a lot of them, as well as some from other schools. Like I said, I was just joking. I could tell his specific post was being objective. He just felt that Curtis is a top 2-3 WR in the SoCon it sounded like and the coaches and myself seem to have him a little bit lower. Hard to justify a guy on a major watch list at WR when they aren't on an all-league team.
I did include a good bit of Mercer players though so it was hard to really push for many. I know you guys have pushed Lakes, Avant, Ward, Curtis, and others as All-Americans. I remember talking All-America and hearing about 5-6 Mercer names. I think at this point you guys have 2 who are worthy of mention in Lakes and Curtis.

I like to tease! However, I don't tease about players. I try to be objective. If anyone on here can point to me being horribly wrong a lot or trashing players who proved to be much better than I said them to be then please do. I hope that is not the case because I have always tried to bring an accurate and fair opinion.

Agree - NOT at WR, not yet, not based on 2014...AP (All-Purpose) is absolutely the right position designation for Curtis and the 1 (and only) Watch List you have published that I think he should be on, and he was not included, is the 'Maxwell' one - "Best College Football Player" - not best WR, not best RB. If you have to 'assign' an actual, single football position to be on your Maxwell list and "AP" is just not an option, then, nope, you shouldn't put him on that list. That's why I mentioned Desmond Howard - not making a comparison of the 2 in terms of magnitude/ability...just that he wouldn't have won the Maxwell as 'just' a WR. He won it for that COMBINED with his returns, and to a lesser extent, his DB play. Dangit...I said I wasn't going to discuss this anymore. I just don't seem to be able to communicate what I'm trying to say very effectively because you keep saying he's not a top WR...OK, I won't argue that point, not yet...but add up EVERYTHING he did/does between the sidelines and...well, you know...
BTW - I certainly didn't mean to imply that YOU were, in any way, being an equine rectum. All I've seen from you is highly informed, honest debate...and that's well worth the price I pay to be able to post and interact here. :)

Yeah I did not put AP as one. I tried to stick to one position. As far as AP rankings he would be high up there!
And thank you! I don't mean to come off as rude the few times I'm sure I do. It's hard to show emotion on here. I laugh at some of what I read on here and I know a few people just troll but most people at AGS are objective and can handle it when I say their player isn't as good as they hoped. Only about 6-7 on here truly troll and can't handle the truth.
The reason I stick around AGS is because about 97% of the people here are really good and this is a good site to read. Some of us scouts do read message boards for news articles. I'm just one of the few, if not the only one, who takes time to post. lol

SCFBF, I want to throw out the name Jamerson Blount to you. You have him listed as a 2nd Team All-SoCon DB, and that is fine for now. However, I promise that barring injuries, this Jr. SS is going to be a nightmare for SoCon OCs. He is a tremendous ball-hawking talent whose up-side is just beginning to show. I'm just asking that you remember this Fall that I mentioned this kid to you here in July.

I'm just predicting what the coaches will do. With UTC and WCU being projected to finish ahead of Samford and your CB being the one who is getting NFL attention I think they will come ahead of Blount but if he does have a great year then I am sure he will be the preseason 1st team pick and an All-American next year. Samford is known for good DBs. He should be next in line. This year is the CB's year but he will be the guy next year for sure.

I'm going to go the complete opposite of everyone else on this thread...
Is Lehman really one of the top TE in the nation?
11 catches for 203 yards (granted that is a 18.5 avg) and just 2 TD in 14 games
There is a lot of practice video of him making some crazy plays though. The TE has just been a poorly used position at UNI since about 09.

As I know you know, there's a lot more to playing TE than catching passes. Tight Ends who can't run block and pass protect are wide receivers ... fullbacks who can't run block and pass protect are running backs.

UNI has a long history of TEs/FBs that are essentially OL in a TE/FB number but Lehman isn't really one of them.
He came to campus as TE/WR combo. He was 6'6/6'7 220lbs. He's now a full 6'7 245-250 but still more a WR type.
UNI uses 2 types of TE - 6'6/6'7 low/low-mid 200s and 6'1 260lb OL types. Both have seen NFL guys -
Schylar Oordt spent time with Jacksonville and St Louis - he was 6'7 240-250 and a WR type.

Ryan Mahaffeey was a bowling ball at 6'2 260 and spent time with the Ravens and Colts - he had 1 carry (-5 yards) and 25 catches (11 his soph year) in 51 games started.
http://yourweeklypaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/ryan-at-UNI-for-the-Web.jpg
Then there's Austin Howard who was both types
Redshirted and then played 2 years at TE at 6'7 280ish pounds. Then started for 2 years and was all conference/all american at left tackle and has been a starting T and G in the NFL for the Eagles, Jets and now Raiders for about 5 or 6 years at 6'7 330

Oh...he also played basketball at UNI for 2 years. One of the nicest dudes I've ever met. Hung out with him quite a bit. Never seen anyone able to palm a full gallon of milk with both hands at the same time and have his hand completely engulf the jug like he could.
The issue is the OCs at UNI have had an identity crisis the last 4 or 5 years with our offense. TEs used to be heavily featured and have that specific build. They wanted to change offensive styles and recruited for the new style but never used them correctly - like Lehman.
That seems to be changing with the new OC. He loves 6'6 type TEs who can run. UNI has a couple of them. So maybe it will be a breakout year for Lehman
