Hell, if I was 67, I'd retire too. It's a shame he hasn't won a championship though.

I hope like hell the assistant he wants to take over gets the job because that's a job that would be a perfect fit for UNI's Jacboson.

Ryan played college ball at Wilkes University which is near where I grew up. His Chester childhood definitely entrenched a certain toughness about him. He's definitely one of the best all around bball coaches of the last 25 years.

UW is a great gig. The Kohl Center is a terrific venue, Madison isa great college town and there's an administration that gets "it". Why Minnesota hasn't learned from UW is beyond me....

From what I gather Minnesota has focused so heavily on "non-revenue" sports with the old admin that sports like football and MBB never got what it "needed" to compete with the other schools. Other non-revenue athletes from other schools were always jealous of how nice the facilities at UM were, and how nice the athletes were treated compared to everywhere else - based on talking with former athletes from UNI, Iowa, Iowa State, Drake and Wisconsin that I know.

If the the balance of revenue and "non-revenue" sports is a pendulum UM would have been swung almost as far left as possible to non-revenue sports as a "P5" could be and schools like Iowa, Wisconsin, etc... were the exact opposite.

The new admin is trying to swing the pendulum back towards football and mens basketball, but is getting a ton of push back from Title IX and non-revenue sports.

It's a tough balance to find if you haven't already. Athletes of the U of I said they didn't start seeing nicer things/facilities until the UI football team went to the 02 Orange Bowl. The money started rolling in to the football program and it trickled everywhere else. That's what Minnesota "needs" but a swing that dramatic won't happen at Minnesota. Those other sports already have what other schools would kill for. They won't give it up to get the 2 "big sports" going, even though those 2 have the potential to bring is exponentially more to the non-revenue sports than they are already seeing when they are given time to succeed.

Too many pro teams in town. It just doesn't seem like most other Big Ten stadiums when you go the TCF.

His retirement will be the end of an era. Even Coach K and Boeheim adapted well to one-and-done, but Bo Ryan did not...
