I came away from last years game, really impressed with what the Grizz D was able to do. They gave up yards and spent a lot of time on the field, but they really showed resolve when they had to have a stop. Their offense did them no favors. I suspect they will have more sucess this time against a less experienced Bison defense.
Gut feeling is that it will be close and entertaining.
Pretty much this....I don't see how the Bison should be 15 point favorites...ON THE ROAD at Wa Griz. I could even see 13.5 being more reasonable, but I think this is a 1 TD game either way.

Maybe
Carson was still getting use to playing, totally different animal now. NDSU's O-line is big, strong and nasty....pretty good combination to control the ball.
Question marks for both teams.
Entz pointed out the Bison defense will be ready for anything the Griz throw at them and will play hard.
Should be a good game.

Our offense and our line is struggling early so our D may still not be playing on a level playing field in the first few games.

It sounds to me like it's been okay with Gus at the helm. And I don't think it's uncommon for any team's defense to have the upper hand in fall camp. We shall see.

He has appeared in 23 games the last two seasons starting none of them. But its game experience nonetheless. He's also a senior so he's been in the system for a while.

If we lose this game, we are in trouble. The griz would be middle of the road in the valley, I expect this game to be similar to an opponent of such caliber. A team with a new coach, new system, and a new QB should struggle against NDSU. Unless the griz can get offence going against NDSU, this will be a long game.

I agree with the last half of your comments. A new coach, a new offensive scheme (using players recruited for the previous one), and a new QB, does lead to the real possibility the Grizzly offense could sputter in their first game (or even season). If that is the case, it will be a very long afternoon for Montana fans as the Bizon march the field.
Yet your premise the Grizzlies equal a middle of the road team in the MV conference is not backed up in fact. The Griz have consistently won just about all of their games versus your conference other than No Dakota St. We've all heard how tough your conference is, we just haven't seen it on the scoreboard.

Yes, true historically. However, times have changed. In the last half decade the Griz have won 2 games against SD (by 8 and 11 points). You also destroyed UNI in 2011. I consider the Griz as good as the average valley team. Things might change again with Stitt but that to me is at least a year away.

No we are not. The defense might make some mistakes but in no way is the season in trouble. Win the conference and get a bye.
Losing to Montana in there place is not a bad loss. It will take a full 4 quarter effort to beat the Bison.

Disagree. 1 OOC loss and 1 loss in the valley and we are probably on the road for the playoffs. Add to that we are playing a team recruited for a completely different scheme, with a new coach, and they lost some key players to graduation. I don't mean this as disrespect to the Griz but we should win with a comfortable margin. We will need to turn it over 3+ times to lose IMO.

Ok, with the uncertainty of what this season holds... maybe Montana would be just an average MV team. I certainly hope not, but it's a possibility and the Griz have had two sad seasons recently.
Other than last year's Fargo trip I only remember one bad encounter with the Missouri Valley conference. About 20 years back Western Illinois gave the Grizzlies a very ugly beat down in the playoffs. Though I believe our guys returned the favor a few years later. I haven't looked it up but those may be the only two Montana losses to your conference in the past quarter century. Though our guys will have their hands full on Saturday to keep it that way. No Dakota St has fielded great teams the rest of the conference has had some good teams yet is largely riding those coat tails.

Prediction time.
I think NDSU controls the LOS both ways. I think Montana's new offense struggles out of the gate, they may catch a young inexperienced NDSU defense with a few plays and put up a few more points then last year. I think NDSU's offense controls the game and limits Montana's chances. Last year an inexperienced NDSU offense manhandled a stout Montana defense between the 20's and an inexperianced OC lead to some pretty conservative play calling in the redzone. With that last years game still wasn't that close, now with a seasoned NDSU offense and one of the best olines in school history all spells trouble for the Griz. It may be close for a half but the Bison pull away 38-20.

Here are my thoughts on the game.
NDSU offensively is going to be really good this year with the quarterback (Carson Wentz) being in his second year of starting. He can make all the throws, will have the ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage and is really good at running the ball if needed. The offensive line has an All American at LT in Joe Haeg, 2014 starters RT Landon Lechler and RG Jeremy Kelly are back, 2014 LG Austin Kuhnert moving to C and 2013 LG Zach Johnson back starting. The offensive line is going to be outstanding this year. The fullback is kind of a hybrid TE/FB (Andrew Bonnet) and is very athletic for a big guy and NDSU will use him in the passing game. NDSU has #82 (Zach Vraa) and #16 (RJ Urzendowski) back at starting WR's. The TE's are very good with Luke Albers, Connor Wentz and Jeff Illies. The RB's should be solid with #22 King Frazier, #25 Chase Morlock and Lance Dunn and NDSU could be back to the 2 1,000 rushers in the same season.
My thought for the MT D to be successful they have to play 1 on 1 against the WR's and stack teh box versus the run. However with an experienced QB in Wentz and WR's Vraa, Urzendowski and the TE's NDSU could hit MT with some big plays. With the way NDSU ran the ball down MT's throat last year between the 20's I still have a hard time thinking that MT will be able to slow down the run game and in connection with that the play action pass game.
NDSU defensively will be very good at the DT/NG, MLB and the CB spots. I just don't think anyone will be able to run the ball up the middle against NDSU. The OLB's are going to be new starters but are going to be players that have been in the program for a few years and have learned by watching Carleton Littlejohn, Travis Beck and Esley Thorton. The DE's, OLB's and safeties will be new starters this year and that is where I am concerned is that the MT offense with the jet sweeps and read option could attack NDSU. However if NDSU plays solid assignment football it will be tough to move the ball against them. I think with this being the first game for Montana's new offense strategy and a first year starter that NDSU will be able to slow them down. The fast paced offense is great when you can rattle off numerous plays in a row but it can back fire quick if NDSU can stuff them and then keep grinding down the Grizzlies defense.
However if Montana wins the turnover margin by 2 or more than I think that evens the field. Also special teams could be a great equalizer. I think MT will be able to move the ball at times but not consistently enough to keep up with the outstanding NDSU offense.
I think it is close at halftime with NDSU leading by 3-10 points and then in the 2nd half is where NDSU wears MT down and wins going away.
I will say
NDSU 31
Montana 17

Here in Billings (5 hours east of Missoula) we've had days where the smoke from the Washington fires was extremely thick.
That said, I can't hardly imagine there would be a chance to cancel this game due to too much smoke. Perhaps only if the center can't find the ball?

I was actually happy with our performance considering that our head coach was descending into mediocrity and the worst QB since 2004 was behind center in that game. Considering how mediocre the team was, we still lost by the least of any of NDSU's playoff teams that year, if I recollect correctly.

Worst IMO. Some fans will defend him because there's always an opposing opinion to everything.
Maybe it was the fact that he wouldn't stop getting suspended, seemed to perform worse with each season, not better. Perhaps it was the endless interceptions, or the fact that he couldn't pass or run worth a crap. He never seemed to understand the play calls coming from the sideline. Stared like a deer in headlights at the coaches. He was a glorified ball-hander-offer.

Here is an article from the Fargo Forum about Brent Musburger announcing the NDSU vs. Montana game in 4 days.
http://www.inforum.com/sports/3824433-schnepf-even-his-montana-ties-musburger-cant-help-be-impressed-bison-football
FARGO – When ESPN called to ask one of the most recognizable sports announcers in the country to work the North Dakota State at Montana football game, Brent Musburger had two requests—neither of which required more money.No. 1: Musburger wanted the same, entire crew that works with him when he announces SEC football games. So when Bison fans click on their television sets for Saturday's 2:30 p.m. season opener, they will see a telecast produced by the same crew that brought you last year's Auburn-Alabama game.
"What's your second request?" ESPN asked.
"I need tickets," Musburger said.
Yes, even though Musberger grew up in Billings, Mont., and resides two months during the summer one hour away from the stadium in Missoula where the Bison will play Saturday, he has been unable to find tickets for his children, grandchildren and friends who live in Montana.
PARTS REMOVED PER THE BIG GUY...see the link.
Having grown up in Billings, he's also very familiar with Montana football. He remembers Montana's glory days when it won a national title in 1995 and lost to Marshall and a receiver named Randy Moss in the 1996 title game.
Musburger watched Montana's scrimmage two weeks ago. And he's well aware that the first person in line when general admission tickets for this game went on sale last month was an NDSU fan.
"That still smarts in Missoula," Musburger said. "They are still unhappy about that one."
There are some Bison fans fearing that Musburger, because of his ties to Montana, will become a homer—presenting a Montana bias. Musburger chuckled at the notion.
"Please tell them that my father was born in North Dakota," Musburger said, whose late father was born in Bismarck. "Tell them they will get a fair shake."
Go Bison!

Correct. Here is a link to the article.
http://www.inforum.com/content/ndsu-football-team-forced-alter-travel-plans-missoula
Poor visibility from forest fires in western Montana forced the Bison to call an audible on their itinerary. Their charter plane was forced to land in Helena, 120 miles east of Missoula, where NDSU will play the University of Montana today.
.
.
.
.
Instead of busing several miles from the teams hotel in south Missoula for a 4 p.m. practice Friday at Washington Grizzly Stadium, the Bison were on a winding road two hours out of Helena.
One of the three buses, carrying administrative staff and fans, broke down twice, the second time at the top of a mountain pass.
Its overheated twice, said longtime NDSU sports information director George Ellis, via cell phone. As far as getting to a place, I dont think Ive had anything as difficult as this.
The bus carrying Bison players and coaches, meanwhile, continued on, arriving about 6:30 p.m. Missoula time.

FARGO – If any opponent of the Colorado School of Mines football team wants a preview of the Orediggers' returning personnel this year, they can probably call North Dakota State. The Bison coaches have been watching hours of Mines tape from the 2014 season. It's all in the name of trying to figure out what new Montana head coach Bob Stitt will bring to the Washington-Grizzly Stadium table on Saturday afternoon. Stitt is in his first year after a successful 15-year run at Mines, a school where he developed an offense that carried a reputation of having a spread-out, high-flying, high-tempo attack.....there is more at the link.

What does fall mean? A losing season? Not making the playoffs? I mean, I'm almost 43 and I've seen 2 losing seasons. I have 4 national championship games in my back pocket. This is gravy and when my team is good, I'm going to be happy about it.

The Bison didn't have a home playoff game in my lifetime until I got to college. They had two losing seasons in my lifetime and when I was a little kid, beating UND was not the norm. So its not unheard of for them to have "bad" times.
I doubt that will happen though. But it will be interesting to see what happens in the Fargodome and around the state when NDSU falls back down to earth.

It means you're behavior is that of an arrogant prick who is riding the coattails of the team to some sort of respect. No problem with being happy about success, but understand that when you rub others noses in it, it will come back to bite you. And people will be waiting. Winning with class is an asset you might want to consider.

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about.
My first post was about Game of Thrones
Then a couple jokes about Grizo, whom I missed last year in Fargo because he got too drunk too fast.
Then a defense of NDSU as a FCS school,
Then something about a drive in last years semifinal game.
A post about ticket sales
Then a joke about Youngstown State
More ticket sales posts, something about how fetching AJ McCarron's mom is
A joke about the Southland's success in Missoula, a response to someone else's post
A response to a JMU poster making a joke about the Fargodome
A Justin Thorpe joke (never get tired of those)
Then my response to the blather about the noisy Montana fans.
Then your bull****.
Tell me, what showed an inordinate amount of arrogance requiring your board policing?

I think one of the bigger keys for us will be how improved (or not improved) our secondary is. If our LBs can key more on the run instead of worrying about bailing them out, we should hopefully have more success stopping the run than last year.

Our OC likes to throw the ball a little more than Vigen did (former oc). I guess Wentz has a lot of flexibility when it comes to play calling....he's going to call plays on the line. This might be a challenge if WGS is ridiculously loud.

Reportedly the special team work was very sloppy in the scrimmages (shanked kicks, bobbled returns,...). Don't know how much time was put into it, so it may be a real issue of being, or it could be something resolved with some actual preparation. Either way I ALWAYS hate it when our team lines up for a field goal.

If you work at getting along with people then it will usually work out. If you work the other way then that will also take hold.
I explained the title thing, if you feel like dragging it into something when the issue is put to rest then feel free but that might be something in you playing into what I just explained. There isn't an argument but if you feel a need to make one I'll leave you to it.

Since everything has been talked about I'll throw this out for consideration. How the referees call this game can be huge! If NDSU wants to channel their inner Seattle and get physical with Stitts finesse offense and the zebras say no, this could be a much closer game IMO. Especially in an offensive league that is probably used to "protecting" WR's. Doesn't matter if the Griz don't complete passes if they march down the field 15 yard penalties at a time.

Dr. Blank I would like to point out how unfair that comparison is. You've put up a playoff game thread vs this one, a season opener. Everyone is still just warming up in preseason mode. http://lehighfootballnation.blogspot.com/2015/08/week-0-griz-hope-to-smoke-out-bison-in.html
Good job!
The Bison will do what they always do, run right at you.
For me, can the Griz offense run effectively the whole game? It will take a full 4 quarters for it to win.
I just don't think the Griz can consistently stop the Bison running game. The Bison OL is too good.
We'll find out tomorrow.

Dr. Blank I would like to point out how unfair that comparison is. You've put up a playoff game thread vs this one, a season opener. Everyone is still just warming up in preseason mode. I believe we will all be in much better bantering/bickering/trolling form when the Beeson have to return to Missoula later this year for a playoff game.
Fair point, but this is one hell of a good season opener. Love your optimism by the way.

I thought Stitt's mo was to go for it on just about every 4th down so why even bother with the st's work.
Mines attempted 29 field goals last year. xcoffeex
It sounds like the Griz worked on special teams a bit more in more recent practices, but that was after the media was mostly shut out so the details aren't publicly known.

The things I'm interested in seeing is how NDSU's defense (secondary) is going to be. The other thing is our running back by committee. We have some real good running backs and it will be interesting to see who steps it up and rises to the top. Also be interesting to see how the new coach for Montana does and the changes he's made.

Dunn is the real deal. He can hit the big run any time I guess.
I think our defense will be fine. No way that kind of offense is running efficiently on the first game of the season, esp one that has just been implemented.

Yes I think it will be tough for Montana's offense to be firing on all cylinders with all the changes they will see. Yet if I was a Montana fan I'd be excited, the guy looks like a good coach. Only time will tell how it works for him with the move up. Each move up presents new challenges and he's going to be under the spotlight over there. They don't tolerate losing either and I expect they will be an improved team.

question for the Bison fans
N Da State are up 7 with 9:30 in the 4th quarter, and get the ball first and 10 after the review,
Did anyone notice how they lined up on the first play - It was the Delaware Diamond I've been begging for
2 big backs up front
QB in shotgun
1 back behind the QB - Forms a tight little tripod of backs with QB in center -
the play was a simple handoff to the upback with 2 big blockers out in front - easy 5 yards
is this formation something new for the Bison???

Brent musberger is a class act. He acknowledged how great the game and fans of both teams were.
The most impressive part of last night's game was the fact that they managed to go the entire game with minimally mentioning the fbs level of cfb.
They actually talked about the game that was right in front of them. A complete departure from last year's ewu/shsu game.

Last year was the first time we saw that formation I believe. The new OC last year Tim Polasek (one of the least popular humans in Bisonville right now) installed it to get all 3 capable RBs on the field at the same time in John Crockett, King Frazier, and Chase Morlock. It had varying degrees of success but was a good concept I thought since the defense had to respect all 3 guys as ball carriers and Wentz on top of that.

Yeah, I don't recall it being used later in the season either. Morlock kinda got into the coach's doghouse after some ball security issues in midseason last year and saw his carries dip significantly with Crockett getting the majority and Frazier cleaning up the rest. Morlock has proven to be a very good blocker however so having him out there gives the added benefit of having a quasi-fullback blocking if they hand it to one of the other guys.

I hope both ADs are working on another home and home, the last two games were great and honestly I would rather watch NDSU play Montana then most other schools. Two programs with great tradition, plus I still need to get there and check out a game.

What a tremendous match up, hope it continues.

Well, at least you got your team's score right. :D
But if I'm being honest, I was also a little worried you guys might come in and blow our doors off, especially considering all the uncertainty with the new offense. I was very pleasantly surprised.
I'm no fan of spread offenses but Stitt's was fun to watch. Your WRS were very good and really helps that offense go. I think the Bison could have put that game away in the 3rd/4th but you have to give the Griz credit for making plays. 4/6 on 4th down!!! Sometimes you just have tip your hat to the other team. Great game that did the whole FCS proud.
Cal Poly better have their ground game clicking because their defense is going to get a workout.

Congratulations to both schools on a great event. Both teams put on a hell of a game. Smoke or no smoke, it was a fantastic setting and showed incredibly well on tv. I thought that Montana's coach had some questionable play calling at times, but he won the game.
Oh, and for the rest of FCS who like to tout their TV deals. This is what a nationally televised game is, not a Tuesday night game on CBSSports6.

The Griz missed on some opportunities to put it away earlier as well as I'm sure you noticed. We had misses, you had misses, and it makes for ah incredible game when it comes down to it.

So I have a question since I haven't been able to follow the Griz as much this year...
What happened to Shaw? Is he injured? Is he even on the team anymore? Dude was a stud, so I was surprised to see Lider handling punts again

I know that it has been said already but I really think it would be great to make this a yearly affair. Make a trophy and get this rivalry on! Both fan bases respect one another and get along well. Everyone involved loves good football. The loss hurts right now but I'd rather play a competitive game against a quality opponent with a great tradition than powder puff non conference games. This was something to get excited about. Great representation of the FCS and i'm willing to bet it got the rest of the divisions spectators pumped for this weekend. Great game Montana, the offense was really dynamic, WR's were stellar, and you made the plays when you needed them most. Everyone agrees you earned the W

Wow, I just watched the replay, and I think the hook-and-ladder was a good idea. Burke makes that pitch and Jones is very possibly gone. I know people were questioning Stitt's call there, but I love it.

I watched it on ESPN3. Don't know how long they keep the replays up, but it was there on Sunday.

Did anyone not mention that we had the ball with like 2 minutes left and we ran 2 consecutive pass plays?
