CHICAGO -- Memo to the National League. The Chicago Cubs mean business.
The team without a World Series title since 1908 has tackled the offseason with a fury and is on the verge of landing Alfonso Soriano, one of the game's top offensive players.
Soriano has agreed to an eight-year contract worth about $136 million, multiple media outlets reported on Sunday.

So the Phillies miss out on another strong free agent. : smh : I guess $136 million was too rich for Pat Gillick's taste.

Rumor has it the Phils were $50M under what the Cubs gave him. I can't believe we seriously went to him with that offer. They must have been laughing the moment Gillick put that number out there. Damn cheap Phils. :twocents:

What a week. Lafayette debacle, McNabb out for the season, and now we lose Soriano to the ...Cubbies??!! At least Howard won the MVP..but we need some help for him.

THe scrubs are so smart. they have 1 pitcher, and they drop $200 million in 2 weeks on hitting.

The Cubs also made a trade for pitching last week...and they aren't done yet. Zito and Schmitt are both still being discussed, but it will more likely be a second teir pitcher on the level of a Jason Marquis. They also resigned Kerry Wood who will pitch out of the pen next season... a spot where he excelled even when he was injured (surrendered 1 run in 12 innings as a reliever on his career..a solo shot).
The rotation next season will include Zambrano and Rich Hill who was red hot near the end of last season. He seems to have finally gotten past his mental block. Beyond those two...Cotts may get a shot as a starter, and Mark Prior is doing very well in his off-season rehab. Had the season been about two weeks longer he probably would have returned to the rotation last year.
Now, I've seen too many inexplicable injuries happen to count on anything, but the Cubs are shaping up to be able to at least contend in a relatively weak NL Central.
