View Full Version : FCS Players in the NFL: How many from your school?

Something to talk about between the draft and the start of preseason practice.

How many players from your school are currently on NFL Rosters?

Here is a link that breaks down NFL rosters by school. http://espn.go.com/nfl/college

I'll start.

Abilene Christian has 5 current players, plus one undrafted free agent and one rookie camp invitee.

UCA has two.

Alabama has like 30 defensive players. Very few offensive players. Guess that proves defense wins championships.

NDSU has 7. I was having this conversation the other day. You see a team like Kansas which has been abysmal over the years, has 10 players in the NFL. This year 3 were drafted and 7 UDFA's.

There is something wrong with guys in the FCS having to scratch and claw their way to the NFL and a team that barely deserves to exist almost automatically getting consideration before them.

Its an interesting discussion. 20% of NFL starters are undrafted, and 37% of team rosters are undrafted. A much higher percentage is rounds 4-7. These teams have been making mistakes over and over again passing up FCS elite for FBS back-ups because of combine numbers. Not sure how things change but its very interesting to say the least.

You see I was told that only the talented FCS players get taken. Something about if they are truly talented the NFL scouts will find them. Apparently true wisdom from our resident draft guru. Yet year after year practice camp fodder from FBS backups fills the rosters until cut day and truly talented FCS players watch it on TV.

Its so little amount of time to make an impression, its amazing how undrafted free agents get a decent shot. Have to make the most of it, every snap counts for some of these kids.

Its probably why a lot of the HS "5 star" guys dont make the cut. They go through the motions in life and never try hard because they already know they are all that jazz. Meanwhile an FCS kid that went undrafted is working his butt off to make the team not because he knows hes talented but because he wants it more.

Sorry for being way off topic. UNH only has two, not counting the 2015 class.

i think the real question is how many FCSers are currently in the HOF. Not transferred in from BCS but played their whole career with an FCS program. They deserve the most kudos.

In response to your question, here is a list of the hall of famers who have graduated from FCS schools. The asterisk indicate players who have played at multiple schools. I don't think I forgot any current FCS schools but I might have included schools that were not FCS at the time the players were members of the team. I also may have forgot some schools that are no longer FCS but were at some point in time.

Hopefully it was an injury that can get cleared up. Crockett signed a contract so he's technically rostered until the cuts.

Western Carolina's Ace Clark started Seattle's rookie camp today as a "tryout". Hope he can make it. We have no current NFL rostered players and haven't since Brad Hoover retired from the Carolina Panthers after the 2009 season ending a nice 10 year career. Last Catamount DRAFTED was Andrew Jordan by the Denver Broncos back in 1994. But, people forget that former NFL greats Dean Biasucci and Clyde Simmons played football at WCU. Not to mention David Patten, WR with the Patriots who has THREE SB rings. Hope Ace can turn some heads in Seattle. GO CATS!

Does having more FCS games on TV help to get more interest from NFL scouts? The top 10-20 teams in the FCS would probably have a winning record if you transplanted them to a G5 conference even without increased scholarships.

TV has nothing to do with it. There have been D2 games not televised and they still attract 10-12 NFL teams.

Here is how NFL teams determine whether they attend games and how they see players.

1. NFL teams send out scouts for junior pro days in the spring to evaluate rising seniors.

2. Based on those grades NFL directors then make schedules to determine which schools their scouts will visit. Then it is up to the scout to decide which games he goes to in order to see players on those lists.

3. The higher rated a player is or the more prospects a school has the higher the level personnel attend and it also increases the total number of people assigned to go in there.

You see a lot of MEAC and SWAC games on TV but many NFL teams don't even attend them. For example in the MEAC this year the only schools guaranteed to get scouts regularly are Hampton, SC State, and Morgan State. Last year Delaware State had a lot of scouts because they had two legit prospects.

I always thought Eric Brietenstein would go into the NFL and be a fullback in the mode of former Panthers fullback (and SoCon alum from WCU) Brad Hoover. Alas, that did not work out for Eric. Ironically, the one Wofford alum in the NFL is a receiver-Brenton Bersin of the Carolina Panthers. Panthers ownerr Jerry Richardson, whomwas also a receiver, is the only other Wofford alum to have played in a meaningful game in the NFL Former kicker/punter Kasey Redfern was with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the preseason but did not make their final roster.
