Congratulations. Obviously one has to wonder what a 6-5 team is able to do against what appears to be a very complete 10-1 UMass team. I don't think they're a 'patsie', and while the start (and esp. the OOC part) of the Patriot League showed some less than encouraging results, it will still be quite a competitive game in my opinion.

First meeting ever between these 2 schools!

I think Lafayette matches up better with UMASS rather than say New Hampshire. The Minutemen want to play a physical game and pund the football. I'd be more concerned that a team that likes to spread it out. the biggest disparity between the upper ecehlon and the PL usually boils down to speed. Up front I think Lafayette coul match up well with just about anyone. Where we have struggled is defending the pass. I don't think UMASS is going to change their philosophy for Lafayette. I expect this game to go right down to the wire.

Well I don't think they will either. But they do have the top A-10 QB getting the snaps...

It should be a good game, and apparently televised on CN8!

We can play the physical game when we are motivated... i.e. Lehigh... Penn was very physical but we were flat in that game. Tavani has even touted our conditioning this season.. I guess we have seen results.. we rebounded from a five-loss streak.

P4L, I wanna go so bad! I am leaning toward it. But I gotta leave Friday then and come back late Sat. or Sunday. I even looked at flying to Hartford but that was a mess too! You got a two hour head start on me in terms of geography! You going?

I'd like to... I'm in North Jersey... Amherst would be about 4.5 hours away..

Even so, I'd drive to Lafayette for the Maroon bus.. it's an hour west.. no big deal... I'm guessing it'd be $50 for the ticket, ride, and lunch... prob be early though.. noon start.. good and bad...

Well its not going to be a shootout. No team has scored more than 21 points against UMass this year and UMass has played some high-powered offenses including UNH and Navy (top 25 in scoring in I-A.) UMass ended the season 2nd in I-AA in scoring defense so the chances of Lafayette scoting 35 points is slim to none.

How does the Pard secondary matchup against UM's WR Brandon London (6'4"), WR (Rasheed Rancher 6'5") TE Ian Jorgensen (6'5") and WR JJ Moore (6'1")?

Seems to me that UMass has an advantage in the passing game and will be looking to a short - medium passing game on 1st and 2d downs to take advantage of the Pards having to keep 7 in the box to deal with Baylark.

I'm surprised that UMass hasn't exploited the size thing more in its matchups. London and Rancher have been very impressive when I have seen them.

25 years ago today, Bill Russo in his first season as LC head coach beat a favored Lehigh team at their place, 10-3 to finish 9-2. Only losses were to Colgate & UNH. What a game that was and I still recall it so well! They were 3-7 the year before under Neil Putnam and didnt score a TD in six games! Nobody gave the Leopards a chance in that game either - except themselves & fans. Prior to the game Lehigh had the number 1 offense in I-AA averaging 30 points a game and LC was averaging 29. Lehigh was giving up 12 points, the Pards 11. Both teams were at 8-2. The Dunkel ratings favored Lehigh by 8 points.

To be honest Lafayette doesn't match up that kind of size in the secondary. I would expect they will try to offset that disadvantage by bring a lot of pressure and playing a lot of zone. If they allow UMASS to throw underneath, and use a kind of a bend don't break approach, they may be able to force a couple mistakes with the pressure. The difference will be in the red zone. I don't expect UMASS to have problems moving the ball, but they have had to settle for field goals in the last few weeks a little too often and that has allowed some teams to stay closer than they should have been. If Lafayette can get some red zone stops and keep the game close the Leopards will have a shot in this game.

The Pard secondary has gotten younger and better since mid-season, but still is a big question mark when confronted by a well designed and executed passing attack. I agree with Pard4Life. UMass should mass (pun intended) some very impressive offensive stats on Saturday. Lafayette must minimize point production from those stats to stand a chance.

It seems we are a smallish group here of 6-8

Actually - and nit picking - we did a poll here at AGS earlier in the year (June?) and found 10+ Pards and fellow travelers. I'm betting that it's in the 12 - 15 range now.

As for "Are you gonna be there?," I have a ticket, and now it comes down to how excited I get about doubling half way home from my holiday hideaway in Maine. Weather could be a deciding factor. Right now the forecast calls for "Mostly cloudy with a 30% chance of rain. Highs in the upper 40s." Could be worse.

I think Lafayette should be a tad more concerned with TE Brad Listorti then Jorgensen. Listorti has some huge catches on the season (26rec, 395yds, 2 TD), while Jorgensen only has 2 catches for 17yds.

Pretty neat, Carney. My first brush (uh) with Maine was last year burying my wife's father's ashes (literally, they said get a shovel and have at it!) up in Island Falls/Smyrna Mills, where that side of her family's from. You're not as far up as Aroostook, I wouldn't guess? We foolishly paid for a moose tour, and then saw eight on our own just driving around. We're sick that her relatives basically gave their land away for a song. One cabin on a small wilderness type lake called Roccabema, I'm sick.

Anyway, anybody take a look at the UMASS-Hofstra box score to see how they kept it close? Maybe someone could tell us.
