NEWARK – With a month left in the season, University of Delaware softball coach Jaime Wohlbach was fired Monday afternoon."They called me in, said I run a hostile environment and I'm dismissed," Wohlbach said.
A UD press release later confirmed her dismissal. But it gave no specific reasons for Wohlbach's termination or why it occurred now instead of after the season.
Athletic director Eric Ziady would have no comment, UD spokesman Scott Selheimer said.
Wohlbach added that she'd been regularly consulting with UD human resources because of what she termed "bullying" from senior associate athletic director Joe Shirley, who oversees softball.
The two had an ongoing dispute, she said, that included her receiving below-average marks on an employee appraisal.
"I am completely in shock," said Wohlbach.
She added that Tom LaPenta, UD's chief human resources officer, was with Ziady when she was fired.
"Joe told me I was too positive and I needed to be more of a 'Debbie Downer,' " Wohlbach said. "They've been [messing] with my head literally for the last eight months, and now it escalated to the point where Joe kept bullying me and lying and they called me in and dismissed me.''...
