Southern and Texas Southern were battling for the Southwest Conference women's basketball regular-season title Saturday night when a bench-clearing fight broke out midway through the second half.
Officials ruled the game a double forfeit.
Southern was leading 51-49 at the time, and the league's official Twitter feed said the score would stand and the teams would share the regular-season title with 16-2 records.

Seems to be a trend that has gone from men's basketball to cheerleading and women's basketball.
They should ban both teams from the post season. When security guards have to hold back a player minutes after the fight is over it is pretty bad. I know people do things in the heat of the moment but get a grip.
We are going to become like English soccer hooligans.............

Very ugly scene, especially since this was a match up of the top two league teams both riding 14 game win streaks. Sadly this affects TSU more since Southern can't go to the big dance.

Technically Southern should already have out of the post season, but the league office allows them to play. Very eager to see how they handle this.

Why do they let them play in the conference playoffs?
Different sport but in the WCHA, that takes the top 8 out of 10 in hockey, won't allow Alaska-Fairbanks to participate in the playoffs. Not sure where they finished up- maybe 5th.
I was a senior in high school when there was the big Ohio State-Minnesota brawl. Two Gophers were suspended for the rest of the season. Oddly, that is how Dave Winfield got his big chance to play basketball as well as baseball. Buckeyes won the game but were never the same after that- Gophers ended up winning the Big Ten. No conference playoff back then.

$$$$$$$ the league moved the tournament to Houston last year and they play in the Toyota Center. They hope the combo of TSU/PVU/SU will draw big crowds. Personally I'm not a fan of the move even as a Southern fan.

First off, not much of a brawl. A few seconds of pushing and shoving with a few punches thrown isn't a brawl. I also didn't see the cheerleaders doing much more than trying to separate the players. Obviously, the bench clearing warrants mass ejections, and justifies the double forfeit. The biggest problem that I see is the SWAC stating that the score at the time of the fight stands as the final score. So, from now on, if you're in the conference final, with a NCAA berth on the line, as soon as you go up by a point or two, you can start a brawl and get awarded the win once everyone has been thrown out? I would have awarded the championship to the Semi-Final loser with the best regular season record, but that's just me.

I agree- I wouldn't have let either of those two teams go.

Thanks for that. Want to note a few things after watching the video:
Very impressive of the one girl to draw the charge on that play
Huge overreaction to a charge that caused the fight
Not sure if this means anything, but the players on the sideline in blue were all going to stay where they were until white all left their bench and started to throw punches
The one girl missed the layup.

Texas Southern has withdrawn from the tournament, 15 total players are suspended. Tournament is a mess, all the new 2 seed has to do is make the finals and they're dancing
