For UL, that will mean an extra $5,888 per student-athlete per year on top of a scholarship valued at roughly $18,000 to in-state students and $26,000-plus for out-of-state students.

With approximately 212 scholarships spread over the school's various athletic programs, it amounts to $1,248,256.

"That's a lot of money," Farmer said.

Which, again, prompts the question:

How will UL — which also happens to be in the silent phase of fundraising efforts to support an athletic facilities master plan capital campaign, and part of a state system searching high and low for ways to cut costs — come up with the cash?

Farmer has been busy lately discussing that very question with his coaches.

"Either we're gonna raise an extra $1.2 million," he said, "or we're gonna deduct expenses (by) $1.2 million.

If you're in an Olympic sport at Louisiana-Lafayette, might be time to check out your other options.

Ouch! This post hurts my eyes! Make it go away! USL has no place on this board!

What USL is trying to do is to sweeten the pot and get football commits who would be on the fence about USL as a fall-back school to see them as more of a viable option.

I'm not sure the mercenary approach is going to work for them. Traditionally, they've tried that route through other means and the lack of a local tie hasn't lent itself well to having cohesive teams.

Now, they've gotten a coach who's had some success by selective scheduling...they no longer load up on money games, and schedule weak sisters and a couple of FCS schools each year and, voila. have improved from their traditional 6-6 to 9-3 without much effort.

They still suffer when they play decent teams, so this development is not surprising....

However, the RCAF does have some money in the coffers....it'll be interesting to see if they fare any better going this route or not...

I wonder what the effect will be on the rest of the Sun Belt, too. They'll almost have to fork over the extra $1 million a year to match, and the more sports they sponsor, the more at risk those programs are to folding in order to "cut costs" to support the venture.

It also looks increasingly that this will be across the board. It won't just be for a sport or two.

I have an old track buddy whose son runs for USL. As soon as he graduates, I hope they crash and burn ;)

As a Louisiana Resident, how's this playing across the rest of the LA public funded schools? With good buddy Bobby chopping lots of healthy limbs of appropriate state gov't, to close a governor created tax income/ spending deficit plan most LA schools are not in a position to fund more. To our SWAC LA brethren, is this the kind of "guidance" which could create a SCSU like result, especially with the paring back required a year ago?

How about the Southland folks?

I'd assume that LSU has so much coming in that this is a no-brainer "go" especially if any other SEC does it.

Oh - and for my McNeese compadres about USL :p

Seriously, I'd worry about him, based on the AD's comments.
