View Full Version : Pacquiao vs Mayweather: The Megafight (even if it's 5 years too late)

Finally, Mayweather and Pacquiao have agreed to face each other in the squared circle on May 2nd in Sin City. I'm not a big boxing fan but I vastly prefer it over MMA and I'm pumped to see this fight. Pretty sure this in the only fight I may ever be willing to drop $90 to watch pay-per-view. It should shatter every record out there in terms of betting and pay-per-views. What are your thoughts on this boxing megafight? Are you pumped, disgusted by the hype, slightly intrigued, or indifferent?

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too late.......plenty of blame to throw around, but this is Exhibit A (or ZZ?) why boxing has fallen off in the US. Pacquiao isn't the same fighter any more. Gimme Mayweather in a unanimous decision in a borderline exhibition fight.

Meh, boxing has always been like this when it comes to trying to work out the matchups. I'll admit the UFC has that figured out as an organization and can consistently pump out better matchups because of it but IMO it's only a matter of time before the top fighters in MMA get bigger than the sport itself and start dictating who and when they fight as well. I think the biggest drop off in boxing's popularity has been the fact that there hasn't been a dominant heavyweight since Lennox Lewis in the early 2000s (and even that was debatable on whether he was truly dominant). People want to see pure power and KOs and the lightweights/welterweights like Mayweather and Pacquiao just don't deliver those as often. That being said despite boxing's so-called demise Floyd Mayweather has still been the highest paid athlete in the world for the last several years.
In this case my thoughts will revert back to the old cliché "better late than never".

I'd be interested in knowing what the drug testing rules are for this fight. That is what supposedly has been the issue in the past. If I remember correctly, Pacquiao wanted standard testing rules and Mayweather wanted Olympic testing rules

I'm slightly intrigued by this. Many boxing fans have wanted this for years but some have grown too wary of the sport's drop-off (a la youth football?).
Personally, Pacquiao seems like he wants redemption - especially with the attention this fight can bring to the inner boxing fan in all of us.

Manny would have beaten Floyd 5 years ago but not now.
FM will dominate him now.

Do they charge for two tickets when you have to sit on someone's shoulders to see the ring? xlolx

I think Mayweather takes MP in a TKO now. 5 years ago, maybe the reverse.

To be safe, I contacted some "legitimate" ticket sellers. They told me, because of my HOF/ICON status, and association with AGS that I could get a floor seat for 19.5k...booster seat included at no extra charge.
FWIW, I'm seriously thinkin' about this offer. Although it pains me to say it, I think Manny is gonna' get schooled.
If I decide to go, I'll be wearing a new pair of Remastered Jordans...

Pacquiao will challenge Floyd like no one else. He is a southpaw who is extremely active and could win on volume alone as DE LA Hoya almost did vs Floyd. Remember, Floyd is older too. Even at this stage, it's an intriguing matchup. Manny was Koed by JMM , but He was juiced to the gills and Floyd doesn't hav that power. It's a 50/50 fight.

15 days to go! What are your predictions? Is it a KO, a TKO or a decision? I'll go by a decision. Both fighters are old and are quite shells of what they used to be...

Mayweather by split decision. Even though the stats will back it up there will be a public outcry since Floyd is so hated and he won't have as many flashy flurries as Pac will making the decision very contentious. All this will lead to Mayweather/Pacquiao 2 in a year or two where they'll both make enough money to buy the Milwaukee Bucks (if they wanted to).

I would be shocked if this doesn't go the distance. Manny doesnt have the pop he use to have and Floyd is just going to do what he always does, alot of excellent defense and picking his spots carefully on offense.
Im guessing Mayweather in a split. Though, if you believe the hype coming out of the Pacquiao camp, Manny is supposedly looking beastly right now. Should be a good fight, hopefully a great fight.

I watched it for free online, if I had paid 90 for that I would pissed if I paid for that. I'm pissed that I stayed up late to watch the woman beater run away from a fight and hug Manny more than he hugs his kids.
What a ****ing joke

Same here. I hope everyone who paid money to see that feels way more ripped off than I do.

If you had 15-20 people together and watched the 2 undercard matches you paid about $5 a piece for 3 fights that mostly went the distance. First undercard, Lamchenko won by a "KO" in 9 rounds of 12. Lot worse ways to spend $5-10. Anyone who didn't see that the fight was going to be the way it was, wasn't paying attention beforehand.

Still, that match is why a normally $50 PPV turned into a $100 PPV. Usually you can go to a bar that paid a reasonable amount to get the fight and not have to pay a cover but places were charging $20-$50 a head to get in because they had to pay $5000-$6000 to get it. That's next level greed there.

Anyone who knew anything about the fighters knew that the fight was going to be like it was. Like him or hate him, Mayweather did a great job in marketing the fight and making people believe that it was a must see event but everyone who thought about it and did not go with their hearts knew how the fight was going to be fought.
By the way, Pacquiao fights have had cover charges of $20 at bars for years.

I would have paid five bucks if someone hosted a party with the fight. No way would I pay $30 at a bar to see that crap.

Even though the fight game has been historically corrupt, when Don King came to the scene I lost all interest in the constant **** show.
I wouldnt have walked across the street to watch this fight even if it was free.
