I'll never be accused of being a Tarheel fan, but he was a class act.

To my, his legacy will always be clouded by the neverending academic scandal at UNC, which started while he was still head coach.

I bought his book back in 1982 about multiple offenses and defenses. He was extremely organized and had everything planned out. I attended the last college game that he coached, the 1997 loss to Arizona in the Final Four. A true giant of the game.

I grew up watching college bball in the late 80's and early 90's so Smith had already established his legacy. His ability to harness some VERY strong personalities in the 1990's when he was older is what impresses me the most. He and Rasheed Wallace had a very strong bond which is saying something.

I think Smith's biggest weakness was his short benches. Too many of his teams were doomed by a lack of depth. The 1997 team was the perfect example. Arizona wore them down in the second half in the National Semi's.
