FAMU interim AD Nelson Townsend dies at 73

Jordan Culver, Tallahassee Democrat8:21 a.m. EST January 9, 2015

Even though he was on the job less than a month this time around, Nelson Townsend left a lasting impact on Florida A&M.
Townsend was FAMU’s athletic director twice before — once from 1986 until 1987, and again from 2005 until 2007. This time his tenure was cut unexpectedly short, leaving the Rattler Nation reeling at the loss of a man many thought would bring stability to an ailing program.

Townsend, 73, unexpectedly collapsed Thursday while he was preparing for a weekly 8:30 a.m. meeting. He was immediately rushed to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where he was pronounced dead of a heart attack.
The Rev. R.B. Holmes, who was with Townsend’s family, struggled to find words while describing what Townsend meant to the FAMU community. Townsend brought decades of experience to Florida A&M’s athletic department and immediately set a high standard when he was named interim director in December.

“He was a great man,” Holmes said. “A great family man. A caring man. A blessed man. He went out in the way he wanted to go out, doing what he does as a director and a strong Christian man. We’re all devastated, no doubt about that. We know Dr. Townsend is definitely in a better place. We pray for his wife and his children.”

Rest in Peace, Mr. Townsend.

Sounds like a man who was greatly devoted to FAMU and its young men and women, family and God.

We are all losers when people like that depart the scene.
