GRAMBLING — New Grambling State assistant Sam Petitto's office is probably dark right now.

He's hardly ever there. And that's the way he likes it.

"I'm a high-energy guy; I bounce around a lot," said Petitto, who formerly served as an assistant in charge of speed and skill development at Southeastern Louisiana under Hal Mumme.

It's not just that he is busy scheming the GSU secondary for this fall.

Petitto has also developed comprehensive new exercise programs in Grambling's already impressive all-voluntary off-season sessions for players.

"In order for us to separate ourselves from a strength and conditioning standpoint, we needed a guy like Sam that is an expert on speed," said GSU head coach Melvin Spears, who hired Petitto in April. "We wanted to be a speed team, so we needed a guy with that background. In the last week or so, they have really started to come on."

Spears said more than 90 players are volunteering to participate — including 17 freshmen. "Some are in summer school to work on their credits toward graduation, but all of them are volunteering to do it because they want to work to get better," said Spears........
