Reported today that Harbaugh and UM have come to an 'agreement in principle' for him to take over in Ann Arbor. What will be the over/under on how long that lasts? Wolverines seem to have run into a stretch of 'problems' in their program has resulted in a fair amount of instablility.

By in stability you mean Dave Brandon and Brady Hoke...neither of whom are with UM anymore...you are correct

Harbaugh tenure over/under: 3-4 years, why that short? Because B1G is stacked with great coaches at present - Meyer, Dantonio, Franklin in Michigan's division ALONE - and the 2015 season may be the measuring stick for his tenure.
BTW, he's out in Santa Clara... first end-of-season NFL firing of 2014.

Here's a direct tie to the Bo Schembechler years, i think the money will pour in and with his pedigree, so will the recruits.
This is probably the best thing that could have happened to Michigan.

The Big10 is a struggling brand of football, and a large part of that is because one of their marquee programs cannot get its feet back under it.
Football talent on the FBS level has largely matriculated south and west. Old mainstays in the Big10 are struggling to keep up.

The number of 4 and 5 star recruits that have said if Harbaugh gets hired Michigan will rocket up their board and would visit is pretty crazy

Yeah, I really see no reason why they won't be challenging for a national title within a couple of years.

Not to mention my Irish couldn't stop ANYONE this year and shut Michigan out. That team just isn't good. Takes more than a year or two to recover from that level of ineptitude.

Not really, remember when Luke Fickell coached the vaunted Buckeyes for a season? They seemed to bounce back pretty nicely.

I suppose the point is that the gap between UM and OSU is wide, as is the gap between OSU and the SEC elite.
Maybe OSU is better than I think they are, but I imagine they will be eviscerated by Alabama on Thursday. I suppose I will continue to underestimate them until they prove otherwise.

Remember how good Stanford was when he got there? Remember how good they are a 4 years after him?
Michigan also has three times the access to top recruits that Stanford does as well.
I think in 2 or 3 years Michigan could be a top 5 or 10 team again

Harbaugh's players and attitude are starting to leave the program and it's starting to show in part of 2013 and in 2014.
San Diego has 2 double digit win seasons in their history...Harbaugh has both.

As a Furman fan, I can appreciate playing your third quarterback.
Not sure it much matters, though, who is playing QB for the Buckeyes.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/30/harbaughs-michigan-contract-has-base-value-of-40-1-million/?utm_source=fantasyleaguegm.com
Before Jim Harbaugh decided to become the head coach of the University of Michigan, multiple reports pegged the pending offer at six years, $48 million. Recently, ESPN’s Adam Schefter (a Michigan grad) called the package “the richest contract in college football history (https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/549666541739184128).” A one-page term sheet provided to the media suggests otherwise. But the package likewise isn’t as cash poor as suggested, either.
Characterized by Michigan’s A.D as the “same basic contract as 49ers (https://twitter.com/Johnubacon/status/549945762042626048),” it’s not. Harbaugh made $5 million per year from the 49ers, and nothing more. At Michigan, Harbaugh will get a salary of $5 million per year on a seven-year deal. But the document plainly states that Harbaugh will receive a 10-percent increase after the third and fifth year.
If my math is correct (and it rarely is), that’s $5 million, $5 million, $5 million, $5.5 million, $5.5 million, $6.05 million, and $6.05 million. It equates to a total of $38.1 million over seven years, an average of $5.44 million. Throw in a $2 million signing bonus, and the average moves to $5.72 million.
He also gets $125,000 for each Big Ten title game appearance, and another $125,000 if Michigan wins (which puts up to $250,000 per year in play).
For any major bowl-game appearance, he gets another $200,000; the total is $300,000 if the team makes it to the four-team playoff.
Win the national title, and he gets another $500,000.
Winning the Big Ten coach of the year pays out another $50,000, and being named the national coach of the year by one of up to six different organizations triggers another $75,000.
Also, another $150,000 per year is available for academic performance.
That translates to a total incentive package of $9.275 million, pushing the maximum value of the deal to $49.315 million.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Michigan has agreed to “determine an appropriate deferred compensation arrangement” after the 2015 season. Who knows how much more that will generate? These numbers raise a couple of questions. First, who was pushing the $8 million per year average? Second, why is Michigan trying to downplay the value of the package? As to the first question, we don’t know the “who” but the “why” has always been obvious. Pushing it was $8 million per year set a bar that other NFL teams would then have to try to match or beat. As to the second question, well, the answer is also fairly obvious. With the players still getting nothing (plus snacks!), the higher the compensation for the coach, the more unseemly it all looks. So calling it $5 million per year, just like what he was getting from the 49ers, sounds a lot better than a $40.1 million guaranteed base package with up to $9.275 million in incentives, along with a commitment to determine appropriate deferred compensation, however much more that may be.

Why?
He isn't even the highest paid in the conference.
Should he win he will generate 10+x his salary in ticket sales, donations, marketing value, etc... every year
