Since Lafayette Lehigh result can never be considered an upset, I dont know about LC's biggest upset...

Without a doubt for Albany it's this year's win over Delaware with the win over Lehigh a close second.

IMO, NDSU's biggest upset was when it was still a D2 team. In 2003 we went to Montana, down 24-2 at halftime, and won the game at Wash. Griz Stadium 25-24. That win, and seeing it there, was sooooo sweet:nod:

When RMU beat CCSU who was then ranked in double overtime.

(really should have lost that game a couple times, which is what made it even more exciting)

Would either be this year beating Furman or last year beating JMU...although JMU having an off season kinda took the sting out of that.

Probably the biggest upset win in App history was beating a fairly good S. Carolina squad back in 1975. Although, we have taken out #1 a few times, IIRC...Marshall in the mid-90's and GSU in '99.

Hmm.. I'll field this one!

I would have to say... 1940.. Lafayette vs. Army. The Black Knights were ok that year, and so were the Pards... but heck, Army is Army.. especially in the 1940s.

Anyhow... our team was intimidated mightily by Army. There was a South American general visiting West Point the day before the game.. so after the Army marched for review, they paraded to the Lafayette team's hotel... and marched past with calvarly, columns and all.. to intimidate the Pards for the next day.

Lafayette won the game (forget the score) but it was close.. and we played well defensively. Red Balik (believe it was him at the time) compared us to Notre Dame after the game.. saying we were as tough as they were. Hook Mylin then replied "Well I'm sure glad we don't have to prove it and play 'em".. or something along those lines.

Also, I think a win over Princeton in 1909, Pittsburgh in the 1920s, and a Penn win rank up there...

An incident with Penn actually kept us out of the Ivy League.. but I'll save it for antoher post.. :)

SHSU beat #1 Montana in 2004 in Huntsville...

Considering the Kats have taken it to the chin each time we've played the Grizzlies, I would consider it a big win, though many in the Bearkat Nation wouldn't tell you it was an upset...

Can't say we've had any "major upsets" since coming to I-AA...

Some would say Delaware (and it is at this level), but for Albany overall, I would have to say it was a game way back in the day, against Ithaca. In a NATIONALLY TELEVISED DIII regular season game, Bob Ford went into his bag of tricks, and in bad weather, took a kid off the soccer team that day...put him in...and the kid beat Ithaca with a FG very late in the game.

Ithaca, at that time, was a powerhouse...much like Mount Union at the DIII level now, or North Alabama, Valadosta, etc. at the DII level.

Can't recall any in football, but we did beat Iowa State (#2 seed) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001. It was the first year we were eligible for competition in the NCAA (Div. I) Tournament. Either that or the opening game of the next season, where we beat North Carolina in their home opener. We were the first team to beat them in their home opener in 80 years.

For Central Connecticut State its pretty easy (not many to choose from):

09/09/2006 - 17-13 win over #13 Georgia Southern in Statesboro, GA
First win over a ranked I-AA team. GSU has a record 6 I-AA national titles.

09/03/2005 - 24-22 win over Colgate in Hamilton, NY
First win vs. an I-AA AQ conference team (and a playoff participant). Colgate was just 2 seasons removed from the National Championship game.

A few older games, but memorable ones from D-II era:

09/29/1973 - 6-3 win over Maine in Orono, ME
CCSU finished with 9-1 record and first place finish in UPI's New England college division II poll, 4th place in Lambert cup poll.

10/23/1954 - 15-14 win Southern Conn. State in New Britain, CT
First win after 5 straight losses vs. arch-rival. It was the only CCSU win in first 19 games played between the 2 schools.

No doubt the '85 Navy game was the biggest upset with Heisman hopeful and future Raider Napoleon McCallum leading Navy. Probably one of the most underacheiving Delaware teams we ever had in '85. We also beat a better than average Temple that year but ended up 7-4.

Another fond memory of mine was the '89 "upset" victory at home over an 8-0 Maine team led by Mike Buck. We were having a down year (like this year) and beat a very good Maine team 35-28.

Didn't they win one against Harvard back in the early 20th century that was supposed to be a big upset? Harvard was still a "major" program until sometime in the 1920's, and Mass Aggie was an ag-tech school.

I think one of the better ones was in the bad year we had in 1999. When Troy St. came to The Hole rated number one in the nation and with their fans talking all kind of trash. And they left with their tails between their legs after we dominated them 24-7. That had to be right up there as an upset win.

Sticking to the I-AA era,

Our biggest upset was the 2002 picked to finish 6th in the Conference beating GSU in Statesboro 14-7 (It used to be a big deal to win in Statesboro:D )

Second: Beating ASU in Boone later that year

Third: beating Furman 40-20 in 1998. Furman's team was wrecked by injuries that year, but a whooping is still a whooping:D

Being from YSU, and watching them play for 47 years, it's hard to pick one game. However, two stand out. The 1991 National Championship game against Marshall that YSU won 25-17 and the 1992 playoff game against The Citadel, who at the time was the Nr Ranked I-AA team in the country. If memory serves me correctly, in 1992 the Citadel defeated Division One power Arkansas and rode that all the way to the playoffs. The playoff game against YSU wasn't even close as the Penguins posted a 42-17 win. I can still remember Tamrom Smith (187 yards rushing) giving a military salute and watching the tears coming from the Citadel cheerleaders eyes.

In the 1991 national championship game against Marshall, the Penguins weren't even suppossed to be there as they won their first game at home (defeating Villanova 17-16 on a last second Jeff Wilkins 33-yard field goal) and then went on the road to defeat Nevada Reno 30-28 as Nevada Reno missed a 27-yard field goal with one second left. The Penguins then defeated Samford 10- (at home) to advance to the championship against Marshall.

I can still remember the game on CBS and the announcers being very biased toward Marshall and when Marshall was leading 17-6, it got worse. However, the Penguins scored 19 4th quarter points and won the game 25-17.

IMO, the 2002 Cat/Griz game was a bigger upset, because of what it did for the Bobcat football program. Only two years earlier, the Cats had gone 0-11, had lost 16 consecutive rivalry games, and only had 4 winning seasons in 20 years. Since the 2002 Brawl, the Cats have assured themselves of their 5th straight winning season, matching the total amount between 1983-2001, and been to the playoffs twice. Simply put, since winning Cat/Griz in 2002, MSU football is relevant again, not only in the state of Montana, but on a national scale as well.

Biggest upset of a 1-AA team for Furman was probably in the 2001 semis when we ended #1-ranked Georgia Southern's 39-game home winning streak and handed them their first home playoff loss ever. As far as games against 1-A teams, I'm pretty fond of the 28-3 beatdown against UNC in 1999.

For Southeastern Louisiana, I would say beating Boise State in 1980, 17-13, in our very first game as a I-AA school was the biggest. They had just beaten Utah pretty badly and eventually went on to win the I-AA National Championship.

We also beat Auburn, 6-0, in 1950, but Auburn didn't win a game that year.

We beat McNeese 51-17 in 2004 when they were ranked 6th, but they fell apart after that game.

I think the biggest upset victory in UNH school history is the win over 1-a rutgers. The northwestern win was huge bc of the conf. but Rutgers put UNH on the national map. Ricky Santos and David Ball where no longer sectetes. Since that game UNH attendance sky rocketed. Its done more for the program then any win. It also got ppl seriously talkin bout upgrading the stadium. It importance to the program was huge.

1 Rutgers
2 Ga. Southern in the Playoffs
3 Delaware then #1 and the debut of Rick Santos
4 Northwestern (northwestern stinks, I dont care how many schollies they have or what conf there in....if they where in 1-AA i dont think they would win the NC)

I think the greatest upset win in Fordham history is considered to be its victory over Tennessee on November 3, 1934 at the Polo Grounds. Fordham went 5-3 in a rebuilding year (the Seven Blocks were freshman) but scored a 13-12 upset over a Tennessee team that was regarded as perhaps the best team in the country that year.

Harvard always finds a way to spoil Yale's bid to finish undefeated.

Even '68 where both teams came into The Game undefeated, it was Yale who was the heavy favorite. Of course we know what happened there.

More recently, in '89 Yale came into The Game with a 6-0 Ivy record and underdog Harvard cost the Elis a perfect Ivy season and the outright title.

JMU's biggest upset was in the early 80s, when the Dukes took down UVA 21-17 at Bridgeforth Stadium. Of course, UVA had just gotten George Welsh and was awful still. You can tell this by the fact the game was played at JMU. Anyway, Gary Clark had a huge day (yes, the Redskins Gary Clark of the Fun Bunch). He had a big receiving TD and a lot of yards and won the game on like a 74-yard punt return TD.

Some of Yale's biggest upsets:

1929 vs. Army. Yale rallies from 13-0 deficit to beat the nationally ranked Cadets, 21-13.

1934 vs. Princeton. Yale hands the Tigers its only loss in a span of 30 games and costs Princeton the National Championship.

1955 vs. Army. Yale beats nationally ranked Army 14-12.

1981 vs. Navy. Yale rallies to beat Navy's Liberty Bowl team 23-19 in New Haven. It was the second year in a row Yale had beaten one of the D-1 academies (1980 win vs. Air Force).

1995 at Princeton. 2-6 Yale upsets 8-0 Princeton, who was ranked in the I-AA polls.

It was 1987, Raymond Gross was a freshman QB. It was THE spread option's first chance on an icy field. Needless to say, it was the first shutout in our history. We learned after that game we have (sorry, had) a fair-weather offense.
