Norfolk State's accrediting agency downgraded them from Warning to Probation, they are now one step from losing their accreditation. Southern States says that instead of improving over the last 12 months while on Warning, things actually got worse at NSU.

Norfolk State University has been placed on probation by its accrediting agency - a significant setback for a college struggling to turn itself around after more than a year of upheaval. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools publicly announced the decision Tuesday. It comes 12 months after the agency put NSU on warning status, the least serious of its three possible sanctions.
University officials had hoped the warning would be removed. Instead, NSU was handed a more severe sanction. The only thing worse than probation is withdrawal of a school's accreditation.
The university's president, Eddie Moore Jr., said the decision stands in contrast to the progress NSU has made under his leadership, but a top SACS official called the development "very serious."
"More concerns have been raised," said Belle Wheelan, president of SACS's Commission on Colleges. "The concerns have escalated."...

If a school loses its accreditation, what are the immediate consequences?
The largest consequence is that the institution loses access to federal aid and grants, and students can no longer access student aid funds, likely forcing the school to close, according to Beno.
If the commission were to decide to revoke the institutions accreditation, the cutoff point would arrive at the end of the semester, ensuring that students who stayed until the very end could successfully transfer the credits to another institution.

This is probably specific to the San Francisco area school that lost its accreditation and inspired the article, but if a large portion of the students at Norfolk State receive federal aid it is likely the same result.

It would be exceedingly difficult for a state school to fully lose accreditation. Instead, the board of visitors would likely sweep out the administration and install a transition team to assuage the accreditation board.

Not so easy for private schools, however, which is why Saint Paul's (VA) closed and Morris Brown College is all but out of business. According to this article, Morris Brown has 35 students.

yep. Last year, Norfolk let go of their Chancellor that was over the school during the time of the SACS findings. They have an interim Chancellor in place dealing with the Accrediation issues. Their Board may be on the outs soon, however.

The interim guy will help their AD Marty make one splash of a hire soon. Coach Pete retired and they got their eyes squarely on the head guy at Virginia State, who was at Richmond until the DUI thinnigies.

How on earth does a college with 35 students stay open? I understand its proud heritage, but there comes a time when you need to pull the plug.
