I would argue that both Speir and Huesman* were worthy. Maybe the coaches will vote for Speir so they can both "win."


*Coached the team to its highest ever ranking, tied the school record for wins, Mocs first ever undefeated SoCon season, Mocs first ever home playoff game, Mocs first ever seed.

This is the first time EVER I can remember WCU having double digit All-SoCon picks (10). Congrats to the Cats on that!

Outside of Speir the only glaring snub I see is Samford's Bromelow should have been on there. You could throw in TE Brown of Mercer and at WR Hudson of UTC or Palmer of Mercer as guys worth honorable mention for sure.

Yes. Huesman has done a great job overall turning UTC from a low tier team to making them a top level FCS program and the best in the SoCon. However, this was expected. I said it in the preseason that UTC should win the SoCon so I can't really give a guy an award for doing what he was suppose to do. I expected improvement from Speir but not quite this much this season. That's why I would go with Speir by a very narrow margin for this.

Should be an interesting SoCon race next year. If WCU continues to develop could they possibly be #2 behind UTC and a top 25 team next year?

Bill Bleil, WCU, won 2001 COTY and the CATS were 5-3 so Subway is a total idiot if he thinks the only qualification for winning the award is going undefeated. Sorry for ranting but I was really hoping the conference would've have at least noticed the good job Coach Speir and his staff did in 2014. GO CATS!

I think Jerry Moore went undefeated one year but Huesman or someone else won the award because they took a team from preseason 7th or 6th to like 2nd or 3rd place. Maybe it wasn't Huesman but I think that happened one year. It was him or maybe a Georgia Southern coach who had that happen.

Huesman has done the best job taking a really bad UTC program to 1st in a few years, even though it took him a while. He did do it.

WCU fans will argue that UTC has better everything and thus with GSU and App gone, they should win the league. While WCU has a nice little stadium they really don't have the resources UTC has. Honestly, the 3 best teams in the SoCon, on a yearly basis, should be UTC, Furman, and probably Samford. Everyone else is more limited or does have the name visibility, among other things.

If Navy or Army were to win 9 games in FBS and be ranked in the top 20, with a bowl win to finish with 10 wins at the end....do you not think that is a bigger deal than Florida State winning the ACC when they have the most talent and should?

I actually think if Huesman wins the SoCon outrgiht next year that will be even more impressive than this year. He's losing key pieces on the DL, a great TE, and his top LB with the SoCon getting better as a league. Huesman is a very good coach. Hopefully for your sake, you keep him... and I'll say the same for WCU and Speir.

First, I will say I thought Spier was going to get COY. I think both coaches did outstanding jobs, meaning they got the most out of their players this season.

Second, Chattanooga should be proud to have so many on the first and second team...the SoCon didn't have great teams this year, but there were some VERY good individual players in the league.

Third, and don't consider this a jab at VMIs QB, but if a Freshman makes the First team at his position (Lucas Webb) and leads the nation in a few freshman stats, should he be beaten out for Freshman of the year by a kid that doesn't even make the second team at his position? What more could Webb have done to earn that? or is it a matter of wanting to spread the love a little?

What I'm saying is that UTC's results were right as expected, nothing earth shattering there, solid coaching and player execution. Whereas WCU far exceeded expectations, tied for 2nd when projected anywhere from 4th to 6th, landed 10 players on the all conf team, went from 2-10 to 7-5. So, the growth from the previous year are huge compared to what Huesman and UTC did.

I hope this doesn't come off as arrogant because it is truly not my intention...but with the thrill of the playoffs...and with such a dominant undefeated season...I find myself not really caring about whether or not a player got this award or that...or where the team is ranked. I looked at the list and just kinda shrugged and thought "that's cool."

All I really care about is that the Mocs are in the playoffs. Is this the way people who go to the playoffs all the time normally feel? Because it is a completely foreign experience to me and didn't know if it was normal. ;)

You are assuming all positions are equal. QB always gets the tiebreaker but obviously voters felt the All-SoCon QBs are more talented than the All-SoCon DBs. Yes it is normal. Awards happen when you win. If you lose then that's all you have to care about. Go read what NDSU people have said over the years. They don't care if they had a Payton or Buchanan winner. They had the NC and that trumps all individual awards!

Cobb and Webb were both worthy...but as mention, QB is a glamour position, while DB is a "bring your lunch pail" position (hard work, no glory). But I do also think that since Jacob and Davis were solid favorites...and Russ was the COY...there would be some serious grumbling if they also awarded Webb FOY for a complete sweep. As I was saying above...awards are cool, playoffs are better.

Furman returns a lot of players. Senior day recognized 13 athletes, and a number of those were well down the depth chart. Gotta stay healthy and on the field, though. I cannot imagine 2015 going any worse than 2014. Not sure that's possible.

If Mercer plays an all D1 scholarship schedule next year, they may take a step forward in talent and experience and a step back with their record.

You are assuming all positions are equal. QB always gets the tiebreaker but obviously voters felt the All-SoCon QBs are more talented than the All-SoCon DBs. I would have gone with Webb, for the record. He's a better player than Cobb but Cobb is good. If Mitchell was a Payton Finalist and All-American candidate then I think you could argue Cobb is better but to me, QB was more thin in the league than DB was. The fact Webb did what he did makes him the best in the league.

Although, how about your freshman OL on the list? He is very worthy of mention as well!

Very valid points. As a former big boy, I'm not holding my breath for a OL to get POY or FOY. We are well contented with letting others have all the glory...we will just continue to take all the good looks!!!

I could have seen Huesman or Spier as coach of the year, but Spier has done a fantastic job at WCU, nobody can deny that.

I think that Furman, WCU, UTC, Samford, and Wofford will all be in the mix next year. Mercer will be improved too, my guess is middle of the pack before they contend in 2016.

I see every team getting better in the SoCon next year except UTC. We will still be in the mix but will probably not run the table next year.

My guess is Cobb got FOY because without him VMI would have been completely hapless instead of just mostly hapless. We would have really missed Webb and may not have gone undefeated in the conference without him, but we still probably would have won the conference.

Noticed, for an excellent example, as SmallCollegeFBFan called out, that Bromelow, OT from Samford, is 1st Team on Coaches & not even on media team at all. He was one of the technically soundest OLman I saw this year...great effort & almost always blocked his man...which, to me, is what matters. Can't put much 'stock' in media OL selections with him being omitted.

With the amount of film the coaches watch of each other...I definitely trust their opinion the most when it comes to post-season awards (top 25 polls, not so much). And honestly, if the coaches say Huesman is COY, well, it's what they do for a living so I am not going to disagree with them ;)
