I'm watching that circus catch by Odell Beckham last night and I'm thinking that, while it's a pretty good acrobatic catch, how much of it is those ridiculous sticky gloves everybody wears now?

You see everybody being able to catch one handed and even defensive players getting a vise grip on a jersey and being able to haul someone down or at least slow them down with one hand. I may be an younger old timer but I remember back before those gloves that stuckum was banned and the "Lester Hayes Rule"

Anyone else think about this? I can't remember if the NCAA had a similar rule but I tried a pair of these gloves on for flag football once and it was crazy how those gloves stuck to almost anything.

The kid has a vertical over 30". He couldn't jump high due to hoe Eli threw the pass and how Odell had to adjust to the ball.

While it's certainly noticeable on the receivers think about that safety or linebacker that can grab a jersey and haul a guy down like he's sewn to him.

If you've never seen that type of glove in person, it basically has a high-friction vinyl on the palm. Think of your grandma's couch and how much you stuck to the plastic wrap. That's pretty much it.

As a Giants fan, I'm more partial to the Tyree catch because it got the first SB title in my lifetime (I was born like 3 months after wide right). However, to repeat the sentiment above: "everyone wears the gloves, not everyone makes the catch"

I remember Lester Hayes/Fred Biletnikoff and Stickum very well. Nasty stuff but very effective, that's why it was banned, along with making a mess of footballs.

Gloves or not there is about 3 people currently in the NFL that make that catch.

Can't wait for the sport scientists to weigh in on this one. In addition to the discussion here about gloves, I look forward to seeing things like angles and velocity of the ball as he caught it (yes, I actually do some of this for a living, so I find it fascinating).

No disrespect meant to anyone on the board, but I have a strong feeling that the gloves used have very little to do with his ability (or enabling him) to make that catch. I have been proven wrong before, but that's my hypothesis!

Without the gloves, he would have to punch holes in the ball with his fingers to make that catch. Why are the gloves no big deal today? Because the NFL, and football in general to some extent, has become all about offensive stats. It's all about fantasy football. Fantasy FB drove the spike in the popularity of the NFL, and the NFL has coddled it with rule changes that gear the game more towards helping people win their fantasy leagues. Many like it, but this pseudo old timer can't stand it, and would rather watch an 83 bears game on youtube where I know who wins than watch the "modern game" and be bored to tears.
