This was tough to pick. To win the Payton you have to produce, stay healthy, lead your team to a winning season, and truly be the MVP of your team. I went with Robertson over Adams because you can argue that Robertson out of the lineup or not producing hurts his team far more than if Adams is out. Both are great players. Coprich earned the right to be in the top 5 after leading his team to a top 10 ranking. There are rumors he wants to come out early, which would be a huge mistake. Apparently agents and others are trying to get him to come out early. Harris and Mobley both were key figures to their teams being ranked so high. Interesting to note that only one senior is in this group.

Top names just outside of my top 5 are Justin Arias, Gus Johnson, David Johnson, and Tyler Varga.

Emanuel was the easy choice for #1. After that you can move guys anywhere you wish. It was tough because I don’t think anyone else is the solid #2. I think Wagenmann is schemed for more than Cowser right now so I went with him. Dzubnar was out of his mind with 167 tackles this year. He barely edged out Hargrave for #5.

This was very tough after Edmonds. Wieneke is the real deal and so is Hall and Jenkins. Woodson is a guy who I think will get better. He did not always play a lot and still had All-CAA caliber numbers. I almost put Alex lakes in here. I would not argue having him in there. I just felt the 5 I picked faced better competition weekly, except in the case of Edmonds where he was just so much better than anyone else in his league he vaulted to the top. Edmonds would be a star in any league.

Hey thanks for putting this together!

Couple quick questions. I may be missing something so please correct me if I am! Why is Chase Edmunds on your Walter Payton Watch List where as Jake Wieneke is not. He could arguably be the best WR on that list!

Also, how close would you say the gap is between Edmunds and Wieneke?

If I had listed 15 then he would have been in there. Also, Deon King from Norfolk State is another name to keep an eye on. Keionta Davis at UTC is another I would put in the top 20 as well.

Gap is close but have you seen the other WRs? Kupp was on it last year. The Liberty kid is not getting hype but he makes crazy catches. He should be the OFF POY in the Big South, although I predict it will be the CCU QB.

Gotcha, honestly I have not seen the other receivers, just Wieneke. But based purely off stats this is how I see him compared to other WR's.

1. WR DeAndre Carter, Sacramento State, Sr.- 99 catches, 1321 yards, 13.3ypc, 17 TD, 110.1 yds/gm, 4 carries, 4 yards, 4 PR, 69 yards, 17.2avg, 1 TD in 12 games.
2. WR Jake Wieneke, South Dakota State- 66 catches, 1318 yards, 20.0ypc, 15 TD, 109.8 yds/gm in 12 games.
3. WR R.J. Harris, New Hampshire, Sr.- 79 catches, 1220 yards, 15.4ypc, 13 TD, 110.9 yds/gm, 8 carries, 61 yards, 2 TD in 11 games.
4. WR Cooper Kupp, Eastern Washington, Jr.- 82 catches, 1160 yards, 14.1ypc, 14 TD, 105.5 yds/gm, 1 carry, 10 yards in 11 games.
5. WR Darrin Peterson, Liberty, Jr.- 76 catches, 1214 yards, 16.0ypc, 12 TD, 101.2 yds/gm in 12 games.

Keep in mind that Jake Wieneke was catching passes from our backup for the first 8 games of the season and he's been playing with a bum ankle since the middle of the NDSU game.

Here are his numbers since Sumner has returned.

@ NDSU (Sumner's first game back): 5 catches - 87 Yards - 1 TD
@ Indiana State: 6 catches - 172 Yards - 2 TD
Western Illinois: 10 catches - 159 Yards - 3 TD
South Dakota: 6 catches - 177 Yards - 1 TD

In defense of others and Wieneke. Both Jake and Darrin have a highly productive RB so neither has been the #1 guy all the time in their system. Kupp has a big time QB, RB, and another WR in his offense.

I rank based off the skills, not the stats. Carter is a really good player but I have Harris as the top rated senior. He would be a 2nd-3rd round pick if he weren't a 4.6 guy.

Peterson has sick hands and is going to be a force next year with his QB returning.

I think all of those guys are very good players. You can honestly argue somewhat for any of them. Jake is going to have to show he can do this year after year though because all the others have been stars for at least 2 or 3 years for their teams.

Went ahead and did my early list for both Payton and Buchanan awards. Liberty QB and SDSU WR are two not on the list to keep an eye on. Others not on the list for the Buchanan to watch would be the W&M CB, EIU LB, SHSU DE, and Montana DE Holmes is a guy who could have a big year (usually Montana DEs do).
