Advocate staff photo by RICHARD ALAN HANNON -- Southern players run onto the field prior to the start of their game against Grambling during the 40th annual Bayou Classic.

After this game, the trophy that goes to the winner will be retired and sent to the Smithsonian’s new African-American Museum in Washington, where it will be part of a permanent display commemorating HBCU athletics.
Reasons like that, Broussard said, are why suggestions that any other teams play in the Bayou Classic are non-starters.
“The Bayou Classic is Southern and Grambling,” he said. “If you put anybody else in it, it becomes just another ga

should be a big gain of an event and week for New Orleans. this is the best scenario that makes the BC worth the national spotlight every year. if the SWAC was able to get Magic City Classic and JSU/SU game some true spotlight (maybe not the same degree), there will be some big numbers in FCS.

Well then, you have your answer why we choose not to participate in the playoffs. The Bayou Classic is much more valued by our fanbase than traveling to North Dakota, Washington, Iowa, etc..... We aren't giving up such a valued tradition for our school to satisfy other folks who could care less about any of the schools involved.

The Bayou Classic game ball is making the 95-mile trek from Southern University to the Mercedes Super Dome in New Orleans - one step at a time.

Some of Southern University's Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps students ran the ball through Gonzales.

The Bayou Classic Motivational Run is a decades-old tradition started by a few Marines who thought the game ball for such an anticipated event should have a ceremonious delivery.

The Jaguar vs. Grambling State matchup kicks off in the Superdome Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

41st Bayou Classic means big bucks for Big Easy

After the parade crowds of fans stayed downtown pumping a lot of money into a lot of bars, restaurants and hotels.

That’s because the Bayou Classic is designed to be a win win for out of towners and the local economy.

The overall series between Grambling State and Southern University is knotted at 20 games each.

Which means this year’s 41st annual showdown is the tie-breaker.

Close to 200,000 people from out of town are in town.

They’ll spend an estimated $50 million before the weekend’s through.

This win can’t make up for their loss, but Southern’s Dray Joseph and Austin Howard can smile today

[email protected]
At the end of the Saturday’s Bayou Classic, Dray Joseph sought out Austin Howard for an extra-long, tear-filled hug.

And for the first time in two weeks, they could smile, even celebrate.

Joseph, Southern’s record-setting quarterback of the previous four seasons, and Howard, the freshman who threw three touchdown passes to lead the Jaguars to their 52-45 victory against Grambling on Saturday, have been united in grief over the Nov. 17 shooting death of Juan Joseph, Dray’s older brother and Howard’s quarterbacks coach at West St. John High School, the trio’s prep alma mater.

Southern should've offered a remedial reading course as part of your undergraduate curriculum. Grambling and Southern realize some dividends from the game, but - in the strict sense of the word - you don't get paid from NBC.

You get a check from New Orleans Convention Company, Inc. (NOCCI), who manages the event, PAYS the Network for the air time, and then sells corporate sponsorships to folks like State Farm.

You guys get about $650K each, after expenses.

Basically, the Bayou Classic is an infomercial for your bands ;)

I see you're still stuck on stupid.

What part of my post do you think is a lie? The fact that the NOCCI buys the air time, and then gets corporate sponsorship to offset the costs?

This is not secret stuff. It's been widely reported. I'm sorry that doesn't fit your narrative. I've said in the past that the event is fantastic. The football is shat, but it is what it is....

The battle of the bands is the real draw, which is why the sponsorship of the game was in flux last year.

It's probably more that $650K for both schools... BUT, for the sake of argument, lets say that it is just $650k... what's wrong with that?? Did any of the FCS playoff games net that much money for their schools??

Don't do that, that's to much like common sense.

Nobody said anything's wrong with it. But the figures that invariably fly around with this topic are off the charts. The only problem is that both the Southern and the Grambling athletic budgets are a matter of public record. Grambling's financial problems are very well known. The previous poster indicated that the money was a lot more than that....It would be cool if he's right, but - unfortunately - he's not. Thank God that the schools make as much money as they do. Without the Bayou Classic, both programs would have tremendous budgetary holes to fill...

Holy Deflection, Batman! Nobody's suggesting that anybody else has a game like the Bayou Classic. It was put together by Collie Nicholson, a genuine marketing genius.

But, the claims of extravagant numbers aren't accurate. The schools will likely each get somewhere around $500k to $650k, not the $1.5 to $2 million previously claimed.

Your total athletic budget is $6.9 million, all sports, but you claim to bring in $1.5 million for just the Bayou classic?

C'mon, speaking of gum flapping liars, have you looked in a mirror lately?

The fundamental problem in this exchange is that you're too ****ing stupid to realize that providing factual numbers isn't the same as insulting Southern or Grambling.

The financial realites of the Bayou Classic are what they are. They're great numbers, anyway you slice it. There's no need to embellish and lie about what's obviously a successful event.

Yes, it's on TV to a national audience, but NOT because it's a ratings giant. It's on TV because the air time is purchased by a group who sells sponsorships to underwrite the purchase of air time. Then, advertising revenue is sold. Those funds make their way to Grambling and Southern.

It's a different business model than the rest of college football uses. That doesn't mean that it's better or worse. It's just different and it takes advantage of the historic connection between the two schools and th virtual lock they had, historically, that came about as a result of exclusion.

The Bayou Classic has benefitted from some very shrewd marketing and some pretty unique financing. That's an admirable thing.

I wish you were a lot smarter. If you were, you'd realize that I haven't been dissing the event....

It's spectacular. I just wish the football product on display were better ;)

Maybe if it were, you wouldn't have to pay for the airtime to broadcast it! ;)

New Orleans -- Southern University and Grambling State will split $1.32 million in proceeds from the 2011 State Farm Bayou Classic that will provide support to the campuses’ athletic programs and fund scholarships through the SU System Foundation and the GSU Foundation.

New Orleans Convention Company, Inc. (NOCCI), the management firm of the 38th Annual State Farm Bayou Classicâ, recently presented to Grambling and Southern the settlement proceeds from the annual football classic held in New Orleans during Thanksgiving weekend.

The distribution includes revenue from gate receipts for the football game and Battle of the Bands and a share of corporate sponsorship earnings. Money from the gate will go to SU and GSU athletic programs and the remaining funds will sustain scholarships.

For its first run with the historic Historically Black Colleges and Universities football classic, NOCCI was committed to increasing the level of excitement among the Bayou Classic fans and raising the level of corporate support and sponsorships to ensure a successful and profitable event for two of Louisiana’s premier universities.

This was in 2011 with an estimated crowd of 40,000.

What do your incredibly intelligent mind tells you the profit margin for 60k and 19 million viewers might be this year?

TDR mailbag: Bayou Classic payout, all-time QB greats

All this talk about Grambling’s funding situation has some readers wondering just how the athletic budget is constructed. In today’s TDR mailbag, we’ll discuss the financial windfall of the annual Bayou Classic rivalry game against Southern — and how quarterback Greg Dillon shapes up among GSU’s all-time greats.

1. Nick, what is the actual payout that GSU and Southern each receive from the Bayou Classic each year, after expenses? – Darrell

I have been fond of calling the New Orleans game a million-dollar event, and that’s not hyperbole. In fact, it’s worth more than that to Grambling — and was the sole reason that GSU football was the only athletic program not to lose money in 2006, the most recent revenue numbers available.

That season, in budget numbers submitted to the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, Grambling earned $1.2 million from the Bayou Classic — even though a stumble against Southern that year in New Orleans snapped what was then a two-game winning streak for the Tigers. The 2006 figures break down into $461,980 for Classic ticket sales, and $760,865 from sponsorships and other revenue sources.

That makes its own annual argument for a cash-strapped institution like Grambling to skip the playoffs. And it’s getting more valuable every year: In 2005, the Bayou Classic brought in $1.082 million. In 2004, it was $892,652, according to accounting reports submitted to the state.

Hey dumbass......You pay for the air time. You don't get paid based on the number of viewers...

Morever, what happens when you "split $1.32 million in proceeds" ?

The correct answer is you get roughly $650K....which is exactly what I said earlier.

Thanks for playing....Next time just shut the **** up and agree with me ;)

The real question is if you believe that, adding in 3 years worth of increases in advertising costs, etc,...Southern and Grambling are bringing in a bigger piece of the pie. Because they absolutely have not. This isn't a home game where someone takes home the gate fees. Attendance and viewership do not translate to more $$$.
