Hopefully JMU will take care of business in our fight to get a seed and home-field status in the playoffs. Villanova's has been on fire in recent weeks. It is going to be interesting to see how this one plays out.

I'm hoping Mathews will play Banks and or Fenner a little bit more. The've got to be pretty rusty.

Why wouldn't I.. If JMU loses, we get a seed with the win today.. Even if they do go 10-1; we still have a shot at the seed... YSU has won 12 in a row at Stambaugh in the playoffs; and that place would be rocking all november and december long!!
It's common sense! That's why I need SIU to beat UNI today; so we can win the Gateway auto-bid and not have to worry about that dangerous team from Northern Iowa!

JMU came out flat. Nova took the opening kickoff right down the field for TD. JMU responded with TD. JMU also came out flat 2nd half- 3 & out, and I believe NOVA scored their 2nd TD on their 1st possession 2nd half. Then JMU answered with a TD. JMU killed themselves:
-2nd quarter: Punt returned all the way to the 5 by LC Baker. He's trying to juke, carrying the ball like a chicken wing, it gets punch out, and Nova recovers.
-3rd quarter: Baker punt return for TD called back due to penalty
-4th quarter: Middle of 4th, JMU driving, up by 6, score and they can put the game away. Fumble exchange and Nova recovers at the 21. I couldn't tell from my vantage point (I was at the top on the JMU side, 50 yard line) if it was Rascati's fault or the center Scott Lemm. Lemm did dribble 2 shot gun snaps to Rascati.
Box score not up yet, but I was listening to Nova radio network after leaving game (I only live about 20 min away). JMU outgained Nova I think it was 320 something to 270 something, time of possession about even. But Nova had better conversion on 3rd down, and most importaantly won turnover battle 2-1. JMU is not good enough to come out flat and make those kind of mistakes against a good Nova football team. Nova now won 3 straight: W&M, UR, and JMU. They just swept the state of VA. Congrats to them. Now Towson in a must win against JMU. And they kicked UR's butt 31-7. Possibly a must win for JMU also for playoffs- JMU must approach it that way. Huge game in Towson next week.

Saw UD @ JMU last week, and JMU @ Nova today. No Cuff, Nova is the better team. UD with Cuff, Nova slightly better. Give UD an edge on offense, esp with Cuff, even if he isn't 100%. Give NOVA a big edge on defense. Give UD an edge for being at home. I'm going with Nova in a close one. They're hot right now- 3 straight wins.

Lehigh started 1-3 and 2-4. Lehigh is playing MUCH beter ball now then when they were when they played Villanova. There is absolutely no basis behind your reasoning that Villanova would beat Lehigh in a rematch.

How bad will this loss screw up the Dukes? They only have seven DI wins right?
If they loose to to surging Towson, they could suddenly be a "bubble" team.
This loss probably cost them a second home playoff game, don't you think?

If we lose next week:
-we'd possibly not make the playoffs, and Towson would almost definitely be in.
-Odds are we'd still get in at 8-3 and have to either:
-go play a seed (ASU or UMass in the 1st round).
-host as an 8-3. If you're not one of the seeded teams or one of the teams playing them, but are in the other 8, it doesn't matter what you're record is as far as getting a home game- its all about the bid as far as being one of the other 4 hosts, and apparently we put in a good bid
IF we can beat a very good Towson team at their place:
-we'd probably get one home game, and IF we could win that we'd probably be @ ASU second round, or UMass, instead of not having to face them unless we made the 3rd round/semis.
UMass in. UNH (if win next week) & JMU likely. Towson if win Sat.

You're right. I thought it was only no conference rematches in the 1st round. Even though we don't play UMass this yr regular season, the rules state no games between teams from the same conference in the 1st round.
http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=37174
And I don't think the comittee would want a JMU @ ASU rematch in the 1st roud. So if we were going to play a seed in the 1st round it would likely be @ YSU

We won't play a seed in the first round. No way. The closest team to a seed goes there, and there are plenty of schools between Harrisonburg and Youngstown, Missoula, and Appalachian. There is basically a 99.9% chance that we will host Hampton in the first round. As for the second round, if there is an upset we would probably host, if not then we are going to one of the seeds.

Last year I was a regular poster. This year I've had other things going on.
I went to the game hoping we could at least keep it respectable, the kids have been playing well the last few weeks.Nova has also changed up the O somewhat in the last few games. They went from a Pass at all costs to a more balanced attack. It seems to be working. The opening drive was enough to get most of the crowd.(decent for nova I might add),out of their seats. The D has been plagued by injuries so we have had alot of new players out there. Not really a bad thing though, some of the guys are playing so well we wonder why they weren't out there to begin with.
Will say one thing about the JMU fans, they are a vocal bunch! Was a good game to watch as it was still up for grabs till the final minutes.I myself was completely worn out when it was over.
I think at a time when Nova is playing pretty good ball,JMU just overlooked them.I saw them on TV vs UD and they looked better than what we saw today, but that wont tarnish the win in my eyes a bit.:D Good luck the rest of the way Dukes, hope to see you playing in December.
BTW...was talking to a JMU fan outside the main gate at the game.He was asking me about Strathaven HS. Any chance that was you BDKJMU?

In 95' we were ranked 16th or so in the polls and got in at 8-3 and went to #1 11-0 ASU and lost as I recall 31-24. I thought the selection committee try to give the 4 seeds 4 of the less strong/weaker teams. In other words, they don't want to give the seeded teams one of the teams 5-10 in the rankings (with some exceptions- UNH @ GSU in 04'). If we lost to Towson but still made it in the playoffs despite 2 straight losses/8-3 we'd probably be considered one of the weaker teams between 11-16.

November 11th, 2006, 11:20 PM
Who the seeds play doesn't always follow logic. In 2003, UD, a #2 seed, played host to SIU in the first round. SIU was the top team in the GPI and UD was second - both were ranked in the top 5 at the time. Just being a seed doesn't mean that you're face a purported patsy in the 1st round.

They seed the 4 teams and they are guaranteed home games. After that each game and opponent has nothing to do with seedings or rankings. They try to make and save the most money by giving the teams with the biggest guarantees home games and sending the closest team to them. They don't seed 1-16 anymore. They want to make as much money and save as much on the back end. This way they can afford to put as many playoff games as possible on TV, preferably the ESPN networks.

BTW...was talking to a JMU fan outside the main gate at the game.He was asking me about Strathaven HS. Any chance that was you BDKJMU?
No, wasn't me, but I live about 2 miles from Strathhaven HS, a perenial PA AAA football power. I was on the JMU side at the very top about the 50 yard line. Had some older Nova fans near me, and there was some smack/very vocal "spirited" cheering going on between some of the JMU fans and these mostly older Nova guys who looked to be in their 40s, 50s, 60s. They were really into it, and they got the last laugh.
JMUsports.com football stats say attendance was 7751. Looks like JMU had at least 2k fans there. Congrats on the win.

LOL...I know the guys you're talking about. That used to be the home side of the stadium & they wont give up those seats for anything!

I don't think they were doing 1-16 seeds back in 95', only 1-4 like they're doing today. But understood. So if we make the playoffs I guess we should plan to be in Harrisonburg for the 1st round against Hampton.

Just how difficult will it be for JMU to defeat Towson???
Is it my understanding that if Towson beats JMU...Towson is in?? JMU out??
If that's true, who does Towson play in the 1st Round?????

Towson is 7-3 and a pretty good team. They just whipped UR 31-7. It won't be easy for JMU to beat them. I would say if Towson wins, they're in. As far as JMU still being in, I would still think they would, but I wouldn't want to leave it in the hands of the committee- wouldn't want to end up like the 8-3 YSU that got left out last yr. I hope to see a focused, angry JMU team next Sat. They need to approach this as a must win to make the playoffs.

Definitely must-win. However, I think JMU will come out VERY fired up. Whether that will be enough...I don't know.
I think due to the general lack of playoff teams this year, JMU SHOULD get in at 8-3, but if the last two games are losses, then it doesn't look solid at all...
Huge game next week!

I had heard about Nova running the shotgun option with much success against UR last week. I was expecting to see it against JMU but didn't. Interesting comments from Nova coach as to why they didn't. Also Nova coach thinks JMU will be the playoffs even with a loss to Towson. Don't know why Matthews says probably only 2 A-10 get in. UMass is in. UNH will be if win Sat. B/W JMU nd Towson, at least one of those 2. It will be 2-4 teams, more likely 3.

Hope you didn't put any $ on that.

After the major league screw job that the NCAA did on the brackets this year I can't wait for the day that JMU is in 1-A. Enough of the BS you have to put up with in I-AA.
