Would just need to slow them down because all of those teams do not play defense.

Maine is not a great team, but they certainly have a great defense (anyone that doens't believe me can look at the NCAA I-AA stats). Their offense is pretty mediocre, the kicking game is non-existent, there's very little attention to penalties week after month after year, and the head coach leaves a lot to be desired.

Hey congrats on the win, don't get me wrong, you guys have a top notch defense, but after seeing almost every offense of the Gateway this year, it seems the tempo of those games is so much quicker and so many more scores.
I just think the Gateway offensively is better than the A10; and judging by the offenses today; I think that would be enough for a win.

Well does SIU have a games scheduled with UMass soon? Because they certainly can't meet in the postseason with SIU sitting at home. xidiotx

mainejeff i agree...but its rare to be dominant on both sides of the ball...i havent seen a 1-AA team that is top notch on both sides of the ball. One thing overlooked is Maine lost one of there best play makers in Ryan Callahan a very versitle freshmen who left the team for family reasons...since he has left our offense has got a little worse.

You cannot judge the tempo or the A10 by this game. Maines offense is odd and annoying. They held the ball for 15 more minutes then UMass. When you limit the poss on top of playing a great D, its not easy to score. If Maine had an offense, they would be up there with JMU and UMass and be playing in the playoffs.

Just got back from the game. It had a playoff intensity with some NFL style hitting. The Maine defense is awesome. A really great unit.
The game was ugly as expected with two excellent defenses. Despite Maine's lead in time of possession and stats, UMass actually was in control most of the game except...
The last couple of minutes. With the ball at midfield and a couple of minutes to go, the UMass coaching trust had a major freakin' brain cramp and decided to go for it on fourth and one. Remember we have the best punter in the nation. We should have let him bury Maine deep in their own territory.
So the Black Bears get all jacked up by stopping UMass and go down the field and score.
Here the Maine coaches returned the bad call favor by going for a two point conversion, which everybody on freakin' planet knew was coming. Maine botched the play, which actually went in their favor because UMass had it dead to rights. With a illegal procedure, Maine got a second chance.
After the five yard penalty, the Black Bears decided to just kick the extra point. The Maine kicker promptly shanked the kick left...
So we really, pulled that one out of our ass. Since JMU somehow lost to Villanova, we're in the playoffs.
I tell you, A10 games are Tong Wars.

Shows you how much confidence Cosgrove has in his kicker(s). He probably knew that they would have to score TDs in OT because they sure can't kick FGs (or extra points it would seem).
Anyway, somehow Cosgrove and this team seem to make life difficult for themselves. Sometimes, you are just snakebitten.......but sometimes when you have multiple consecutive years of too many penalties, bonehead playcalling, and missed FGs and PATs......you just gotta look to the sidelines at the man biting his fingernails.

From today's Maine Sunday Telegram:
Cosgrove questioned his decision to run the fake kick for a 2-point conversion. "That one's on me," said Cosgrove. "We were going to try to win the game with the fake. It disrupted the chemistry of the whole thing. We were offsides and had to kick from further back. We missed the kick it's on me."

Even if UMass won the game, you have to feel for the player.

The kicker didn't decide to go for the 2 point conversion.
The thing that gets to me the most is that the playcalling on offense has been ultra conservative all season.......and then when they are on the verge of tying the #3 team in the country on the road in a playoff elimination game.......they decide to go for 2?!?!?

The thought of that happening addles my brain(such as it is). Before this weekend, some people were talking about the possibility of JMU getting a top four seed, and now there is a chance that with another loss they might not even make the field of 16.

I totally agree. In my original post, I said I thought it was a bad call. Maine had the momentum. I would have kicked the extra point and won the game in overtime.
Even worse was the play. He tried a trick extra point. If you are going to go for two, put the regular offense and have your full package in. Maine had been hitting that short slant pass all day and the QB ran well.
The fake extra point was about the worst of all possible worlds. Not the least because everybody in the stadium was looking for the fake.

Fire Cosgrove!
Jeff, your helmet choice is ridiculous and annoying.
Fire MaineJeff! :flagged:
All kidding aside, I was at the game, too, and despite the heartbreaking ending, that was a thrilling game to watch. UMass's defense was every bit as tough as Maine's on this day, and it took some changes in the offensive playbook to make things work. Cosgrove/Wilder & Co. went to a series of short passes (something I've rarely seen all season) that opened things up as the second half progressed, and when Maine was given the ball at midfield (I agree with you UMass fans, that was a gift), it really opened things up.
The Black Hole was great, as usual, and it really proved itself by holding the #3 team in the nation to only one TD on the road.
And by the way, we Maine fans have been complaining about dumb penalties for a long time. UMass, I'm sorry to say, was in step with that, too. That hit out of bounds on the same play that Maine committed a holding was a HUGE break on that TD-scoring drive.
To go from the elation of the TD, to the amazement that Maine committed a fake (the Maine coaching staff has been far from ultra-conservative in the past two years), to the shock that the kick sailed wide left (had to tell from my seats at the 40), well, what can you say? The score certainly was indicative of the game itself.
Still, I don't understand Cosgrove's comments on the play calling, though, other than trying to protect his freshman kicker. Cosgrove didn't hook the ball; McNeill did. In fact, I rather liked the gutsy call for two and the win on the road. I can't say it surprised me, though we'll never know if it would have worked.
By the way, UMass fans, while this call was immaterial to the game's outcome, I must ask: What was up with the fair-catch interference penalty in the first quarter? I'm normally the first to defend an official's call, but that one had me up in arms! Did your receiver signal fair catch? I saw no such signal, and the hit was perfect and right on time. I'm trying to watch a replay of the game on the UMass site, but I'm having difficulty.
Good luck to UMass down the stretch. Clean up those penalties, and you should go all the way!

It wasnt a fair catch penelty. Even though they got rid of the halo rule, a player still is allowed room to catch the ball before being hit. Problem was, the Maine got there just a bit too soon.
