My Picks:
James Madison @ Richmond - Loser behind the 8-ball in terms of playoff positioning, going with Spiders being more desperate and at home.
Rhode Island @ Stony Brook - Rams probably going to end 0-12.
Delaware @ New Hampshire - Hens escaped Albany, and UNH is better than the Danes.
Maine @ Elon - Maine riding high after beating UR, but Phoenix have shown some signs of improvement.
William & Mary @ Towson - Tribe still has a playoff life (on life support), and need to be better than the were against Elon.
Albany @ Villanova - Wildcats looking to secure home games through the Quarterfinals, need to win out to guarantee that.

Danefan, what is your biased opinion on that on side kick yesterday.... WTF Happened?

November 9th, 2014, 11:01 AM
I can explain what happen very clearly. And, before I state what my views were...Albany should not have been in that position to have a call go against them on the onside. Still, it happened.
Albany's onside kick was caught at the 46 by the UD player and, while not going the required 10 yards, it was legal because the UD player went forward to catch the ball.. After catching, and cradiling the football for at least a second, maybe two by definition (cradling the football takes about a second to two seconds), Albany's MLB, Cooper, drills the Delaware player and the ball pops out. They called the play on Nicastro, who was nowhere near the play. Here is a thread showing the screenshot of the play:
http://bigpurplefans.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=7774&st=30#entry77588
First, the refs made an illegal motion signal--clearly wrong. Then they called the Albany player for an "ILLEGAL BLOCK", which is not even a proper call in any situation. The correct call to make if they believed the Albany player made contact early would have been "Illegal Contact", downfield.
However, by definition, once the ball goes 10 yards or the ball is put into play by the receiving team, you are legally entitled to make contact with the receiving team going for the ball.
IT WAS A FRICKEN' RIDICULOUS CALL...and it greatly affected the outcome of a game with playoff implications.

Watch at 1:15.
http://youtu.be/F3A1J1yPeoI
That is clearly a good clean onsides kick. There was a skirmish afterwards and apaprently the pile something happened that caused the refs to throw flags on UD's #80 and hit UD with two 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalties. Then out of nowhere with no flag at the time of the play they called an illegal block as Dane96 mentioned (whatever kind of call that is).
One call doesn't make a game, but without that call we would have been in field goal range ready to kick for the tie. In the end though, we lost becuase we lost the special teams battle and because our D-ends were undersized and unable to maintain the edge.
That was just the tip of the iceberg and it went horrendously both ways. I counted at least 3 phantom holding calls against UD and a couple really bad calls against UA. UD clearly wasn't happy either as some coach got a 15-yarder from the sideline in the first half.
Refs are not supposed to impact the play. They are supposed to ensure the play is according to the rules. That did not happen yesterday and that officiating crew should be disciplined. They ruined an otherwise evenly matched and well played (albeit somewhat chippy) game.

you don't have to watch that video very long to see some questionable calls, at :08 watch #74 for Albany hold Jake Guisti #11 for about 3 seconds..

I can't tell you how many times I saw offensive linemen on both sides with their hands on the outside of shoulder pads. No calls them but then all these phantom calls when everything looked clean. Just a very very badly reffed game.

I haven't seen any Hen fans trying to justify that call.....a bad call....... anyway, so is your FG kicker any good? that's probably what it was coming down to for a chance to send it in to OT...

Richmond - Really want to take JMU hear but I think Richmond has a nice bounce-back game at home.
Stony Brook
UNH - Nervous about these last two games. UNH has had issues mentally preparing for some of these opponents of late. If they dont come out firing on all cylinders, UD or Maine could steal one.

Richmond - At home, coming off a bad loss, but should be a great game.
Stony Brook - Too much D for Maine.
UNH - Classic trap game, but Senior Day at home with Goldrich back on the field.
Maine - Riding off last week's win.
W&M - Just because.
Nova - Could be closer than some think.

James Madison 21, Richmond 17 - It just seems like James Madison continues to find ways to win games, and they will continue to do so.
Stony Brook 20, Rhode Island 10 - Stony Brook really is not built to blow anyone out, but they are probably happy to see Rhode Island after a tough stretch of games.
New Hampshire 31, Delaware 24 - I think New Hamphsire will play poorly in one of the next two games. Delaware stays in this one, and the Wildcats scored a late TD to win.
Elon 17, Maine 14 - Going out on a limb on this one. Maine is riding high after beating Richmond and also looking ahead to New Hampshire. This is Elon's senior day, and I think they shock them this week.
William & Mary 27, Towson 7 - This could be a bloodbath for Towson's offense against a very good William & Mary defense. The Tigers' defense needs turnovers to keep this one close.
Villanova 35, Albany 21 - This would be a tight game in Albany. I think it goes back and forth for a half and Villanova pulls away.

StB 24 URI 14 - The Rams will win next week
UNH 41 UD 17 - This is what getting punched in the mouth feels like
Maine 24 Elon 14 - How are these teams in the same league??

Hmmm...since I was in first--and I picked a perfect week--the answer would be: NO.
:)
But you have something to look forward to more than I do: PLAYOFFS. Crapsville is open in Albany, but a win vs. SBU would make for a nice completion to a surprising season of growth.
