jeezus, so much for the projected 20-30mil bid range. :rotateh:

edit: hopefully my Indians win the bid for Iwamura, and it's significantly cheaper

Now we'll see if they can sign him. From the Red Sox standpoint, even if they can't at least that stops the Yanks from getting him this year - if he doesn't sign with the bid winner (it's just a bid to negotiate, not a contract) then he stays in Japan and becomes a free agent after this upcoming year.

Sox want him too. Have the Indians already given up on Andy Marte>?

No way, in fact we're putting all our eggs in Marte's basket, that's why we could afford trading Kouzmanoff/Brown to the Padres for Barfield. I think we look at him as an outfielder, but I don't know what he wants to play in the bigs.

I'm guessing these bids are based much on the success of Matsui and Ichiro. Otherwise I can't see bidding that much for someone who hasn't proven he can be worth that much in MLB

If they pay him that much, he better win every start.

From Orestes Destrade via Boston.com

Orestes Destrade, the former Yankee prospect who became one of Japan's most prolific home run hitters before returning to the major leagues with the Marlins, said that his sources tell him the Sox submitted the highest bid for Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Destrade, who worked in Japanese media for several years, remains a popular figure in that country, and has maintained good contacts with influential people in the Japanese game, say his sources tell him that the Sox bid more than $50 million for the rights to negotiate with Matsuzaka. That would eclipse the estimates made by ESPN's Buster Olney, who cited information saying the Sox had paid between $38m to $45m.

And is that just to negotiate with him. YIKES! But on the bright side, at least the Yankees won't be getting him :hurray:

He better go 30-0 with that kind of $$$$

The revenue Boston will get in 2007 alone from Japan will more then make up for the posting fee.
